Anime and Manga v40: Repeated Thread Necromancy Edition

Still watching Naruto.....

HOW THE SHIT DID ASUMA NOT GO BROKE FEEDING CHOJI?

Deep pockets and he was the son of the Hokage.
************
Always forget for some reason his familial status

EDIT:
Do love how Shikamaru’s dad is always portrayed as a hobo looking forgetful drunk especially when you first see him during the Chunin exams

I apparently like pain

So, this it's the first time I've sort of kept track of recent releases in a few years, and i think i chose a good time to do so. I'm actually surprised at some of the shit I liked, especially Rascal does not Dream about Bunny Girl Senpai. It literally combined some of the shit I hate most about anime (harems, highschool settings, anything remotely moe) and made it into one of the best shows (anime it otherwise) I've seen in recent memory

It's deafeningly bad, Christ awful groddy crap in a world that if you think about it...Makes absolutely no fucking sense. I'll just copy and paste a comment from someone else on another thread.

They also brought up some interesting points about racist undertones about stuff like this even in a fantasy context since it HAS been used to dehumanize certain groups, but that ones more YMMV, though I DO see the point and argument presented and it also explains why more modern media tends to make orcs and goblins more of just another sentient race that humanity simply shares living space with and often giving them more complex life structures and even forms of worship with their conflicts with humanity being more complex and not just, "Race of Evil creatures needs to be exterminated" which can have some rather unfortunate implications to say the least.

Als, he fact that rape is the series got to so often isn't just gross and creepy, but has this disgusting misogynistic feel to it since the worst and most horrific depictions of violence in the entire series all happen to women including some POV rape scenes according to a friend of mine doing a review on the series on MAL which is just repugnant and unnecessary.

Edit: Yeah it's actually REALLY fucking racist if you think about it critically.

Yay, someone else commented on the problematic aspects of Goblin Slayer so that I can do so as well without some fucking weeby chuds shouting about how I'm "TEH SJEEEEEWWWW2EEWWWZZZZZZZ!!!!!!".

Anyways, I don't necessarily think that the depiction of the goblins is racist, just incredibly fucking lazy. Really, any "pure evil" villain strikes me as really fucking lazy unless they're just incredibly entertaining (think Kira from JoJo part 4).

That said, i do think that the show's treatment of rape, and especially the aftermath of rape, is really fucking misogynistic, mostly just because it presents female sexuality as being on a binary between "pure" and "ruined forever". It would've been interesting if they had a female survivor who was still adventuring, even if (and I think especially if) she was still working through her trauma. Hell, it could've served as an interesting mirror to GS himself. Instead, we got a bunch of boring, weak, one-off characters.

However, I do have to confess that Goblin Slayer is a massive guilty pleasure of mine. It's trash, but it doesn't pretend to be anything more than trash (in spite of the dumb fucks on the internet trying to compare it to Berserk). It's one of my new favorite "turn your brain of and enjoy the violence" shows.

Wheres the BESERK, COBOY BEBOP, TRIGUN, RURONI KENSHIN , all that good TOONAMI SHIT, 12 OZ MOUSE

Hard to believe, but most of that was 20 years ago at this point. So they get recommended to newbies, but there's no ongoing discussion to be had for them (except for the random Berserk chapter ever six months or so).

Most of it isn't as good as you remember it honestly. Bebop still holds up, but the rest is pretty meh (even 90's Berserk).

Outlaw Star is another from that era that holds up (for the most part, there's some jank animation at times).

Don't get me wrong, Bebop and Evangelion are my top 2 favorite anime of all time, and FLCL, GITS, and Utena all have a firm spot in my top 10, but, as a whole, 2010's anime shits all over 90's anime IMO.

I disagree, just watched all of that except some of Ruroni Kenshin, and it was just as nostalgic. Trigun also had a lot of philosophical shit in it that I digged.

Well the og animes are all pretty timeless

The Kenshin manga is still pretty much as close to a shounen masterpiece as you'll find.

Trigun maximum is solid, too.

I disagree. 90's - early 00's were better in my opinion, but I'm mostly just a sucker for the animation from back then. I don't think we've seen a big upgrade in the quality of the actual stories in anime.

There does seem to be more variety in anime these days, though, so I'll give you that.

A lot of those were classics, but I can see where you're coming from. Like I get the philosophy of where Vash and Kenshin are coming from in that killing is VERY wrong, but it's just not a practical application and sometimes it's a necessary evil(one that does taint you). Sugimoto from Golden Kamuy said it best, "I don't like killing people, but I will if it's what I need to do to survive". Funny thing is that I rate Outlaw Star MUCH more above Trigun nowadays specifically since it doesn't try too hard to play any philosophical things.

The racism aspect I found out about from a thread in another forum and it was disturbingly dead on in that it's the same stuff hate groups have used in the past since time immemorial to "other" certain groups and justify hate crusades against them(stunted, ugly, cowardly, dangerous, gonna rape your women folk, etc.). The misogyny, sexism, and use of rape in what almost comes off as titillation were just incredibly gross and offensive(the manga is significantly worse from hat I've heard including POV scenes) and feels like it's there for nothing more than shock value and if you removed it the story would be no different, and yeah they commented that it would have been much better and interesting if Goblin Slayer had actually been a woman instead of a cliche bishonen as was revealed. Your point of enjoyment I greatly respect since it's not under any illusions and I can admit to having a liking for terrible crappy movies especially comedies unironically. The comparisons to Berserk and Doom HORRIBLY miss the fucking point of those series since the enemy is internal. It's humanities own evil making the whole such a horrific place and miss the point that everything from the Apostles, Godhand, and Demons from Doom are all humanity at it's most unrestrained evil and vile allowed to run rampant.

On more positive shows, I really wanna watch Bunny Senpai, but it just feels...not me. Like while I KNOW it's well done from all the reviews I've read, I'm just sort of done with HS drama's of this nature. Now stuff like GALS and Lovely Complex that combine wackier comedy with lots of complex HS drama yeah I can do that all day, but the melodrama feel just puts me off. Zombieland Saga you people need to watch. Get The Fuck Out of Here with the Idol Hate too. It's fucking amazing and really does hit you in the feels when it wants to. Ditto for Slime. I'm not seeing people talk about Slime on here and that makes me feel a certain type of way since it's been fucking amazing on all fronts(Story Adaption, Animation, Sound) and we might make it to one of the most badass moments of the early parts of the series. As an aside, I cannot recommend Slime's manga and LN's enough and can post some links and stuff for those interested, though I encourage you guys to buy it since the scans are missing some bits from the official releases.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Yeah, but Vash and Kenshin's struggle with the impracticality of their decision comes up several times through out their stories; It's not like they're sending out a PSA message to push an agenda. You don't need to agree with them in order to enjoy their story.

I think one of the coolest pieces of logic I picked up from kenshin was right after Kenshin beats shishio: Yahiko is talking with Kenshin about how glad he is that kenshin won because shishio's view point of "kill or be killed" was wrong and Kenshin's ideology was right etc etc. Kenshin stopped him right then and there and basically said, " Just because I won doesn't mean my value's are correct. If Shishio won, would that have made his ideology any more correct? If I lost, would my ideology have been incorrect? Thinking like that is what gives weight to Shishio's values."

I paraphrased, obviously, but that was a real revolutionary moment for my 13 year old brain at the time.

Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again: The Kenshin manga is much better than the anime. From beginning to end it's a solid shounen manga with a complete story, no real fillers, and a satisfying ending. The fact that the jinchuu arc never got propperly animated is a shame. A lot of people think the anime dropped off after the shishio arc, but the manga continues after the shishio arc with teh jinchuu arc, which is just as strong as the shishio arc if not stronger.
