As a big dog lover, experienced handler, as well as not much a fancier of cats , a city is not a place where you walk a dog off leash. It's simply asking for trouble - seen too many dogs hit by cars and other bad, bad situations.

As a big dog lover, experienced handler, as well as not much a fancier of cats , a city is not a place where you walk a dog off leash. It's simply asking for trouble - seen too many dogs hit by cars and other bad situations.

Yup, seen puppies crushed under cars multiple times, lost a full grown male dog as well on a dual carriageway. You let your dog run wild and it will ... plus they can cause accidents that result in the death of real people, not just a replaceable dog.

That's sickening, but...that's nature for ya, and in a situation where we introduce new variables, we'd better take care of our own asses, as well as others'. Knowing the disposition these rhinos have, I'm surprised it took so long for it to react badly.

I can't even get myself to "like" your post, but it's spot on. Also, some people may have had legit traumas in childhood - I'm not speaking about people being on "default mode: freak out within the vicinity of any canine" - and would rather not have a dog approach them, as friendly as it may be. I prefer to leave anyone alone, and also to be asked about them petting my dog.

So many times guys walking dogs off leash:
1. have little to no control over them (thinking they are the second coming of Cesar Milan);
2. will shiver and scream bloody murder while you, alone, break up a dog fight that was caused by their own negligence. Depending on the size of the dogs involved, breeds etc. this can end badly.

I'm not even mentioning attacks on humans.

Just let "Lassie" live in your TV, this is real life.

I'm barely scratching the surface with my real dog stories, so many stupid owners teach their dogs how to be stupid just like them. I love dogs and prefer them over cats, but they have to be trained and controlled, and if they show any sign of being a danger to humans (without reasonable provocation) they have to be put down. It's rough but when they rip a kid's face off or eat another dog you'll not only feel worse, you could end up being fined or even sent to prison....as well as ruining multiple people's lives.

I knew some people that had a mastiff transitioning to adulthood (7 months old) and suddenly deciding by itself whom he allowed to pass his "pack" by and not. (I knew the guy they bought the once pup from - an Armenian that would not feed a dog that was a pushover. He must've found the last mastiffs with old school mentality in England and brought some over. This was out of those.) So I pull out a nice shiny prong collar and tell them that the "little" shit needs some structure and discipline. Of course I tell them how it must be used and that they need to put some generous umph into any correction, the end result being him submitting to any silently muttered word as if Zeus himself was about to light up his ass otherwise. It wouldn't take long to get it through his skull.

The neck on this animal was the size of that of a calf. They instantly teared up and lamented about how much it would hurt their "pup". I told them: "Much less than conscience and jail would hurt you if he bit a child's face off."

Mind you, my wife, weighing less than the dog put him in its place (his attitude did not fly with her) and put the collar on, spikes facing inwards of course. Like any giant dog, he was still impressionable and pliable. But I knew pretty well what he was going to develop into.

Yes, there are desperate cases where a dog needs to be put down, I'd do it in good faith myself, but in most cases it's simply stupid owners.
