For over a week I saw people bash Gina Carano on these boards about not making weight even going to the point of calling her a fat whore cow. So now that Thiago Alves has missed weight by the same 4 pounds that Carano did why not the outrage at Alves that we saw against Carano? Was it really a question of her training and commitment or just the fact that she is a hot chick in MMA that cause people to flame her and not Alves?

Wrong forum. No one cares

Why is this the wrong forum? What forum should it be in then? This man has a valid point. I agree with you, there was a double standard.

Its simply a question as to how much a fighter is judged on there training/commitment if they miss weight. Asking if Carano was bashed because she missed weight if as AIRTIGHT said there is a double standard.

It is a question about fighters conditioning, in the conditioning forum. Now how is that in the wrong forum?

Carano had a 3 week training camp due to prior obligations to the American Gladiators. In fact, I'm pretty sure her contract with the Gladiators stipulates she must weight between 155-165 for the show. So personally I cut her some slack.

Bingo!

There is an outrage going on for Alves.

Threads dedicated to him not getting a title shot due to failing, threads about him being disrespectful towards the sport, etc etc.

The only double standard here is yours, if you can't see the outrage for Alves.

Huge I tell you HUGE!!!

I'd rather discuss it here than in the fight forums where most of the answers would be:

"Who cares, she's hawt!"

Not sure if it's an intentional double standard. People just judge based on what they see.

Looking at that picture, I doubt most would question whether or not he trained hard enough for his fight.

Carano looked a little beefier than normal so naturally people are going to question her training leading up to the fight.

Seriously, those are some massively thick arms lol.

Doesn't Carano have a knack for not making weight for her fights? I think I read that somewhere, may be wrong though. What I don't understand is how can you still be allowed to have a W on your record if you don't make weight for the weight class you are fighting in. If that was the case, why even bother cutting weight if there is no real punishment for not making weight. Or is there a "pillow" where even if you miss wieght you can still be eligible to fight?

I believe she missed weight for the Evinger, Kedzie and Sexton fights. In her muay thai days, she supposedly often missed weight there as well.

I understand there is a few thread about Alves but not nearly as many as the Carano threads. Also people were saying how she shamed herself and the sport and he career is over because no one will take her serious. I didnt see that about Alves

Personally I do not care for EliteXC or Carano but it just seemed unfair for people to jump on her like that. Fighters miss weight, it happens. At least she had a legit reason for it with only 3 weeks to cut down form 155 which her AG contract makes her maintain. People like Alves, Lutter, and all the TUF contests who miss weight had no reason and didnt get nearly the backlash Carano received.

Alves is different from carano in a couple of critical ways 1) alves doesnt have a history of not making weight, carano does 2) Alves trained hard for his fight with hughes, carano had a training camp less than half as long as a normal fighters. To alot of people (me included) a fighter who trains as hard as he can and still fails is far far more respected than a fighter who simply doesnt want to train

In most cases the fighter that doesn't make weight has to give a portion of their fight purse to their opponent and the opponent can choose to have the fight at a catch weight or not, but with all the time people spend training it is seldom for a fighter to say i'll walk away after 12 weeks of hell.

The pillow is usually 1lb but alot can factor in. I've heard of some wrestling comps having a 2kg buffer while grappling comps i've been to had no allowence

Alves has been caught and suspended using diuretics though. How hard you train doesn't 100% factor into your weight come fight time, fighters have to plan out their cut, especially guys as big as Alves. He either had a very hard time trying to cut wster weight, or he just didn't start his dieting soon enough and came in too heavy to make the weight he needed by cutting water
