I'm very much against Jon being in those conversations for exactly that reason, but you won't be able to get a majority to agree on any of the other candidates either.
 
Simple...you cant. PED in a level playing field is fine. But doing it against the rules is an immediate DQ from GOAT conversation. Can totally still be called a dangerous fighter, but thats surface level.

Even if you set aside the roids argument, he's still the biggest eye-poker in history.

I've never seen another fighter actively target the eyes as much as Jon did against rampage. And the fact that he did it to like 5 other guys back then too just seals the deal.

And that's not even considering his DQ vs Hamill for illegal elbows.

I mean what other top fighter has a DQ loss on their record?

he's the most talented and physically gifted fighter ever. However he got caught cheating and that screws up his his claim to goat'ness
 
i don’t think you can dispute that he’s used peds. the problem is so many fighters have used peds, and many had the fortune of fighting in a time when testing was more relaxed or otherwise easily circumvented. so if “cheating” was just part of the game everyone was playing, is it really cheating? or is his crime the fact that he got caught?

usada recently amended the rules for iv usage. for a few years it was considered “cheating,” then usada quietly amended its rules to allow it with a doctor’s supervision. so a few fighters popped under the old rule and were considered cheaters, but then cheating became legal, and who knows how many fighters “cheated” legally after that. it all seems very arbitrary.


at the end of the day, the only objective way we can judge whether a fight was fair is the fight itself. and based on the way jones performed, i just can’t chalk it up to peds. he’s simply a great fighter. he won his fights (aside from those controversial decisions) by being a better fighter. perhaps if we one find a way to concisely filter out cheaters, i’ll put an asterisk on his name. until then i consider him goat.

I’ve just named you about 20 names who are likely all in and around the top 50 fighters ever. All of these fighters have a lot of question marks around their ethics around PEDs. They either straight-up failed a test, or they had screaming signs of use.

If all those boys are ‘in doubt’, then it’s extremely hard to pretend that only Jones is in this boat.

We can’t start doing this ‘let’s give the GOAT award to the guy down in 8th place because he’s the only one who was clean’.

What are guys like Shogun, GSP, Aldo, or Fedor doing on this list? What are their "screaming signs of abuse", exactly?

You can hate these fighters all you wants, but PEDs usage are serious accusations, and these guys never pissed hot while their competition kept failing test after test (Fedor's drug testing in Combat Sambo was notoriously strict for the time).

No one is denying that guys like Anderson Silva have been juiced to the gills since day one, which is why it's unfair to their clean opponent (unless you're going to claim that Roy Chonan, Daiju Takase, Nick Diaz, Luiz Azeredo and Daniel Cormier have screaming signs of PED abuse?)

UFC champion Forrest Griffin had this to say, back when Jon Jones and Anderson Silva were still sneakily shooting up steroids and claiming to be all natty:
“When it started, I had two problems with steroids. One, they’re illegal and I’m doing illegal drugs. And, two, you’re telling kids, fans, young people that watch the sport you have to do drugs to do this.
Well, that’s not true. The best guys don’t do drugs. Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, Georges St. Pierre, these guys don’t use drugs, they’re naturally athletic. The best guys in any sport don’t use drugs. It’s the guys on the second tier trying to get to the first tier that use drugs.
