All Time GOAT poll

Stipe is a 2x champ with the record for most defenses and defeated the likes of Nganou, JDS, Werdum, Arloksv, Overeem, Cormier 2x, Mark Hunt…. People underestimate Sipe because he looks like your uncle, but that’s a crazy resume.
Yeah it's not that impressive when almost every name is well past their prime.

Did he beat the best version of JDS ? Highly questionable. The best version of Werdum ? Maybe not. The best version of Cormier ? Naaah.

But at the same time did Ngannou KO prime Stipe? Did Werdum submit sea level Cain ?

How do you guys judge the context of HW wins and losses ? It's to me the hardest division to analyze..

I couldn't make a ranking between Stipe, Ngannou, Cormier, JDS, Cain, Werdum.
It's like rock paper scissors shit

Stipe is in fact the only guy to nip at the heels of Fedor in terms of heavyweight accomplishments.

Here’s my list:

1 Fedor: most consecutive “title fight worthy” wins (7.) Beat 7 former UFC champions.
2 Stipe: most consecutive and most total HW title wins in UFC history. Beat Cormier in the trilogy. Beat everyone on your list that he fought.
3 Werdum: Beat Fedor, Cain, Nogueira, and many others. However, never defended his UFC belt.
4 Ngannou: 1-1 with Stipe, but left before doing the trilogy. Far fewer accomplishments than Stipe.
5 Cain: Wasn’t able to sustain his career. Lost to Werdum, never avenged it.
6 Cormier: Great champion, but Stipe beat him in the trilogy. Stipe has a far superior resume at HW.
JDS: Great champion, but I’ve never had him on my goat list. Cain beat him in the trilogy. Stipe beat him.

You can easily make an argument for Stipe being the heavyweight goat.

It's hard for me to say, there are so many different conditions and timings that change how to weight wins. You have tons of guys who could be argued to be better or worse. As far as Stipe goes I think he had good timing coming in when guys weren't washed but right about before or during the steep decline fighters have later in their career. I don't think that there is a consensus GOAT at HW, but Stipe does have the record of title defenses. Also most of the legacy guys have is in Pride, which obviously is a very different environment compared to UFC post USADA.

He might be, but he’s the least impressive “GOAT” of any division, maybe even including WMMA.

I never watched him and felt like I was witnessing anything special.

30 years from now nobody will care who was at their peak when or hiw old certain fighters were. People will just look at records and who has who on their resume.

Granted, whoever is considered GOAT in 30 years probably hasn't started their career yet.

he has been successful in the ufc, i will give him that

he might even have the most title defenses, longest reign, etc.

i do not, have not ever considered him the greatest of all time.

maybe the greatest part time fighter, he does have a case for that.

He has the statistics for him, so he's the HW GOAT of statistics.

But losing to a 39 years old Cormier (coming from the LHW division) isn't the best thing for your legacy.

fedor fought better guys era vs era. dominant for a longer time.

stipe has never subbed anyone. lost in his prime to struve and jds. then of course DC and Francis

as for UFC HW goat then yes.

Thanks for this nuanced answer sherbro. It's rare these days

He never lost against an old MW like Fedor + had many fights under USADA.

Fedor is irrelevant.

He's the UFC HW GOAT, but not the overall MMA HW GOAT. That is still Fedor, and if Jones keep going the way he is then it will be Jones.

I'm a Stipe fan and Jones fan for sure, but feel like Jones is playing up Stipe's "HW GOAT" status in the headlines to make it more impressive if he wins. Just my shitty take. I'm looking forward to their fight.

No, you're not crazy. He has some GOAT value in several criteria's for sure, but "most defenses" does not necessarily make a GOAT. It's one of many criteria.

But if you thought he was last week and are now rethinking it after Jones v Gane, you're still not crazy, but you'd be a dumbass.

To be very clear, I am not calling you a dumbass. You have given no indication of what I just said above.

Prime Stipe vs Prime Fedor would be THE BEST HW matchup of all time.
youre not crazy TS but anyone who throws disrespect on Stipe because he isnt Fedor is dumb. HW GOAT list is Stipe/Fedor, Werdum, Randy, Cain, and then everyone else.
