"Alex is such a big guy" Can we stop this narrative?

Lol this thread is ridiculous, I don’t know why Pereira fans are so insecure about this.

He makes weight, so it’s perfectly fine, I don’t have a problem with his size. But he’s clearly massive and relies on weight bullying. Again, it’s legal, so I don’t have an issue with it, it’s part of the game.

Is Whittaker an Izzy fanboy, as well? Because he said the same thing about Pereira.

Not at all. I am not complaining. Just educating the guy comparing weight and height

Still Pereira had a substantial weight advantage but the outdated ufc weigh in system makes it perfectly legal. For example, the more advanced system at OneFc would not make it possible

Lots of perceptions posted here, I'm not gonna quote them all, just reference them.

"Stop saying Alex is a big guy" - No. He fuckin is. Short list for biggest guy to fight at middleweight.
However:
"Not an excuse for Izzy losing" - Now that's correct, Alex made weight, so can't blame him. But it does add fuel to the argument of how much do you let extreme weight cutting get away with? As long as it's allowed, there's no problem with the people doing it, but I think complaints right now are levied more at the system than the fighters.
"I guess it wasn't a problem when Izzy was doing it" - Legitimately, what the fuck are you talking about? What's Izzy's walk-around? 200? He said 203 once, but he blamed that on the American restaurants at the time as being higher than normal, and even then, people like Chael thought he was over-exaggerating in the hopes of getting a Jones fight. He got to 200.5 for his 205 title fight. The good majority of middleweights weigh more than that in the cage for their middleweight fights. Who actually thinks Izzy is a giant middleweight, and not just a tall one? Submit your names so you can be evaluated psychologically.

he was self admittedly 29 lbs heavier than izzy on fight day. thats a bigger difference than mw to lhw. i agree though, izzy can bulk up and cut too, but he didnt so it's his own fault.

where did you get that? He weighed 211 on fight day. He even posted a photo the day of the fight. That’s 25 over 185.

I mean he is big as fuck, but he makes weight so it doesn’t matter.

It definitely exposes a lot of the people who accuse fighters they don’t like of being a “weight bully” but then since they like Pereira they don’t care even though he is probably the most effective weight cutter I have ever seen.

211.5 morning of. Probably 215 by the fight. Izzy weighs 200 at most? Probably pretty fair to say Alex had at least a 15 pound weight advantage. 29 is a serious exaggeration

I mean are we going to ignore that he is clearly a LHW fighting in the MW division? All of the reach/height criticisms thrown at Izzy shouldn't be ignored on this guy either.

Same goes for Islam, Usman, Aljo and so on. All of them are extremely big for the division and when/if any of them ever go up I'm expecting the nuthuggers to say they dodged fighters their own size all their carwwr.

In that case, Izzy barely escaped getting murdered by a midget in KG.

Izzy isn't a big Middleweight. He's tall, but sort of narrow framed for his height and doesn't hold a lot of mass. He was barely 200lbs for his LHW title fight vs Jan. Alex is massive for MW. Either way, he made the weight class, so I don't want to hear the crying and excuses from the Izzy fans.

It's so tiring hearing everyone give Izzy an easy out with this. All that matters is that they both made weight. It doesn't matter what he looks like. Looks can be deceiving. Just because your eyes "see" him as bigger doesn't make it so. Size shouldn't even be a fucking discussion when they are fighting in the same fucking weight division.

They make it out like it's fucking David vs Goliath in that fight.
try telling that to max after poirier and see if he doenst smack uou upside the head

i think size and power becomes a bigger factor the more athletic the combatants become

people like to bring up crocop and sapp and it just isnt the same

For this bout Israel was 215 when started camp, 207 during fight week.

unless alex is doing something illegal to make weight, its acceptable.

is he more of a natural light heavyweight...i think so....but until:

-UFC does 'day of' weigh ins
- hes doing the cut legally
-he doesnt make it a habit of missing weight at middle

... its fair game to me.

mabye they can place a cap on how much weight you can gain 24 hours after the cut. say 10 pounds. I think one of the sanctioning bodies (wbc?) in boxing does this.

*izzy didnt have a problem going up to light heavy to try and beat jan for the lt heavy title.
Logically speaking, any of these guys cutting tremendous amounts, maintaining muscle mass, and gaining weight back quickly are using something that USADA would frown upon. That's just human physiology. Until he (or any of these guys) pops, it's all conjecture.

Alex is big for MW, easily 1 of the biggest. But there are tradeoffs, usually guys who cut a ton tend to gas sooner. I have no problem, there are also people exaggerating, like some people said Alex is 2 weight classes bigger than Izzy. That's just bias & delusion

I think it’s wrong to assume Izzy was 200 at most while Alex was 215 if we plan to use these numbers to discredit Alex. The only true numbers we know are they both weighed in at 185 the day prior.

Alex is a giant MW. Now absolutely every fighter cuts more weight than most boxers do, so I'm not going to cry about it. MWs today probably would of been LHW or HW 10 years ago.

I remember when people thought GSP was a giant welterweight. Or when people thought it would be physically impossible for middleweights to get any bigger than Yushin Okami.

I’m sure your last comment was directed to me, so I’ll reply. I’m talking about him being much bigger than many of the guys he fought. He was considerably bigger than Canonier, Whitaker, and Kelvin. No one discredited his wins because of his size because they both made weight. Now people are crying because he fought someone bigger than him within his weight class. Where were the tears when he fought Costa and Vetorri.

It was pretty obvious at the beginning of the fight that there was a huge size difference. Shouldn't be used as an excuse, but it was definitely surprising how much bigger he was than Izzy, reminded me of Conor/Alvarez. Like you knew fighter a was the larger of the two, but when the two of them were in the ring together it looked comical, like they weren't even the same weight class and we were watching the old school tournament days.

The size issue is only brought up when you don't like the fighter. Pereira, Jones, Cyborg
