Aleksandr Karelin

Remember when you said Israel Adesanya was a freestyle wrestler?

Go away troll, you're a joke.

Well someone from Africa and New Zealand doesnt have a lot of folk style wrestling opportunities

What style of wrestling do you think they train in New Zealand?

You don't have to be a gold medalist to be a representation of a style

Calm down and try to talk about Alexander and how worthless a pure Greco-Roman base would be in MMA

You guys are soooo dramatic

This account earned a block too, mate.

Hopefully it earns double yellow cards like your other shit account @-guerilla-

Dude has his own Wrestling move the Karelin Lift, which is a normal reverse body lift which is very common in the lighter divisions but unheard of in heavyweight and up.
Dude was sending dudes flying weighing over 220 pounds.
I think if he was wrestling now and coming to the Sport he would be candidate for HW Goat, that kind of wrestling mixed in with striking and his huge size he would be an heavyweight khabib.

Still waiting on abdulraschid to cross over.

I reckon he would do well, but a lot of the studs you think will kill it tend to fall flat, so who knows? He has a lot of tools for takedowns but Greco limits you to upper body takedowns only and international styles don't require much riding. I'd be a fool to say that the restrictions of the ruleset that he competed under is reason to say he wouldn't translate well though. He will always be one of the "what if"s in MMA in my opinion.

Yes, yes... anyone who knows karelin or Greco-Roman wrestling knows about the old reverse lift

Trouble is he's absolutely terrible at MMA because he spent his entire career focusing on Greco-Roman wrestling

MMA is its own sport so the people who are best at it training it exclusively

You don't get better at tennis playing racquetball and you don't get better at football playing rugby

There is no "what if" in Alexander karelins MMA skills... they're terrible

He'd never trained MMA or did any crosstraining at all, he also said he didn't really like it.

So he actually has NO MMA skills, no wonder they're "terrible".

So not sure what you're trying to say.

Still, even with no MMA, he was manhandling Maeda.

MMA fans are overly judgmental too. Unless Karelin has come in and had an Anderson Silva run people would act like he didn’t transition well. Simply coming to the ufc and beating a ranked opponent though in reality would be a hell of a feat.

it’s like in this other thread I was in today where they were asking why the mma from birth fighters never appeared. People were bringing up Rory Macdonald like he was an example of how it was a shitty idea to train mma from the outset because he lost some fights. But the dude fought for the title and beat a lot of great fighters. I’d personally label him a huge success

This is so damn true -- Rory MacDonald has had a fantastic career that he should be proud of. He has a great resume. There are so many other guys like that that fans are so fickle about and act as if they fall short just because they may or may not have become a world champ or in some cases, even if they do (a la Lesnar). I don't feel that this is exclusive to MMA though. All pro sports have fickle fair-weather fans and contrarians.

I'm prepared to be flamed for this but everyone should remember that guys get channeled into greco roman wrestling because they're not good enough at freestyle wrestling to make a go of it. In the context of MMA who knows, Randy and Chael were great, but if Karelin were the greatest wrestler ever he wouldn't be doing greco roman.
That is not true at all. When you are a kid in Russia, your parents take you to a wrestling school. Some have greco roman wrestling schools that are close by and convenient and some freestyle, there isn't a preference necessarily. So that will go a long way in determining how he developed his skills and what variation of wrestling he wrestled in. That's how it happened for me as well btw, since I wrestled for a short time as a kid and my coach was a European medalist at that time. Also, during Soviet Times, whether you were a Greco or freestyle wrestler, you had to go through rigorous selection, and the country needed both types of wrestlers for the international events. I don't ever remember hearing that freestyle wrestling was more prestigious at that time.

You guys might as well not argue with this prymayte guy. I don’t think he’s a troll but it’s obvious he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, won’t admit that, and is unwilling to learn.

I mean isn't the point of the threat what if, obviously he wouldn't be fighting well as things stand but I thought it was about him going into MMA.
