After withdrawal from Markus Perez fight last weekend, Eric Spicely released from UFC

I wondered that too. Does he have a potential case against the UFC? He's under a doctor's care and medication for injuries sustain while fighting for the UFC........and then the UFC fires him. Seems like a wrongful termination case to me.

Like if I'm working for a company and get carpel tunnel or something.......then have to get surgery and have lingering effects from the surgery I don't think the company can just fire me. Maybe long term disability or short term or something but they can't fire me for injuries and follow up doctor care that happened on the job.
He isn't a UFC employee, he is a contractor who just had to pullout if a signed fight, the UFC lawyers would eat him alive.

It does seem that Spicely is a bit of a medical liability given what he revealed after the botched weight cut. He probably shouldn't be fighting anymore and the UFC just want to wash their hands of any potential horro show that might come from this. I hope his friends/corner intervene and sit him down.

How is this legal? How can you cut someone who’s unable to compete off an injury? Not a lawyer but it’s mind blowing how one sided these UFC contracts are. It’s written slavery. I don’t know how those contracts are permissible in a court of law.
He was unable to compete because of a bad weight cut. He was healthy enough to sign for the fight, train for the fight.....he couldn’t perform because he couldn’t cut weight.

its never anyones fault for fucking up a weight cut. They always have a good excuse ready to go.

How much time did he have to “train”? When did he get notice? He was almost certainly not given a full 6-8 week training camp. There’s no way Eric Spicely knew he was fighting Saturday in June. He probably found out 2 weeks ago and needed the money and took the fight. So why should he lose his job? This should be illegal. Don’t try to justify this. What the UFC is doing here is wrong.

If he isn’t an employee why is he wearing a uniform when he works? And if he isn’t an employee then how come he is not free to find work in multiple places while working for UFC? Independent contractors have the ability to find work whenever and where ever they see fit .. Seems illegal to me

want to try again?

The only way to heal, and get off anti depressants sustained from head trauma from being punched in the head.....is to continue fighting and getting punched in the head.

UFC did spicely a favor. Spicely needs to chilli
Yea I’m sure being broke and jobless should cheer him right up

I'm not saying it's right but legally they are not UFC employees.

He shouldn't have excepted the fight if he was dealing with these issues, period. And really, whose to say this is true what he's saying. He literally could have just fucked up by not dieting right and blamed it on head trauma and antidepressants. How many excuses do u typically hear when someone misses weight. I know i hear an excuse EVERY SINGLE TIME. Relax with the written slavery. They sign these contracts and except the terms of the contracts, and u and i have ZERO idea how or what is written in them

Who knows how sneaky the UFC makes their contracts. They probably can cut them if they are offered a fight, accept it, and fail to make weight or something like that.

It'll just be because he's classed as a contractor, there'll be outs in it, he probably violated a term of his contract by missing weight.

Dana doesnt want fighters going around saying they got head trauma from a fight
It seems like he kept quiet about it until after he got fired. This is a grim insight into what these fighters go through for our entetainment. He got a check for 50K, but lost the ability to fight again. Not worth it.

Eric Spicely released from UFC after dropping out of fight due to botched weight cut

Middleweight competitor Eric Spicely has been released from the UFC after he was forced out of a fight this past weekend at UFC Vegas 5.

Spicely first announced the news on social media with his management team later confirming the release to MMA Fighting.

"Alright @ufc this is goodbye again for now. Let’s see if we can do a 3 peat. Sorry to all my fans."

— éS (@EricSpicely) August 3, 2020

The former Ultimate Fighter competitor was on his second stint with the promotion after he accepted a short notice fight against Deron Winn back in June 2019. While he took home Fight of the Night honors that night, Spicely never got the chance to compete for the UFC again after falling out of his next scheduled bout and then having a fight cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Spicely was then scheduled to fight this past weekend at UFC Vegas 5, but he was forced out of his matchup with Markus Perez due to health issues related to his weight cut. He later revealed on Twitter that he was struggling with his weight after starting a prescribed regimen of antidepressants following his fight with Winn.

“For the sake of transparency this was my first weight cut since starting antidepressants due to the head trauma I sustained in the Deron Winn fight,” Spicely wrote on Twitter.

“Needless to say it went horribly wrong and my fight is off. I will figure this problem out and hopefully be able to compete again.”

Now Spicely has been released from the UFC for the second time.

If you need to start taking antidepressants due to head trauma, fucking retire. Jesus christ that's a huge red flag and he'll be lucky if any AC licenses him again

The man shouldn't be fighting period. Antidepressants after a concussion? UFC shouldn't be minor league here. This shit would not cut it in the NFL. UFC wants to be taken seriously then they need to set a precedent.

He seems to think he can fight again, he's asking for short notice fights on Twitter
