African lions introduced into North America, success or not?

Totally. There have been rumors over the years, of random tigers being loose in Alaska. Bering land bridge was around, not too long ago.
 
Pound for Pound the Jaguar is much tougher and stronger but the sheer size of the African Lion would overwhelm the Jaguar pretty damn easily. A big Jag can get up to about 250lbs, a Big Lion and you're looking at north of 600lbs here. Like trying to have 2007 Floyd Mayweather square off against 1988 Mike Tyson.
Fun fact: Jaguars are native to the USA, and still live in small numbers in the SW around the border. Up until a few hundred years ago, they were found as far north as the Grand canyon, all the way up to the San Francisco, and even the SE.
 
Snakes, wolves, mountain lions, alligators not enough? Revive some dinosaurs too while you're at it.
 
They would evolve to better survive in their new environment :
