I have a bunch of these...

I wonder whatever happened to that WAMMA title belt
No idea hahaha

Well, it lost a lot of prestige since they flip flopped on whether it was Werdum's after the win or not

When questioned by Ariel Helwani on "The MMA Hour" before the Strikeforce bout, M-1 Global's Evgeni Kogan defended the WAMMA strap thusly:

"What it means, and what it means for us, is the idea that anyone can fight anyone. ...Eventually everyone is going to fight everyone else. It's going to have to happen. It's inevitable. That's what the WAMMA belt stands for. It stands for the hope for the future that the best people in the world will meet the best people in the world without organizations, without contracts, without all this stuff getting in the way. That's why we hold the WAMMA belt in such importance. ... It stands for an idea. Not only for Fedor but for us."

When Helwani pressed Kogan on whether the belt would be up for grabs when Emelianenko met Werdum, Kogan responded, "Good question. I believe that it would be."

Now, however, it's a different story.

"I was mistaken," Kogan told me via email this week. "The WAMMA belt was not on the line in the June 26 bout."
In other words, Werdum can stop waiting around by the mailbox for that belt to show up.

"One Belt, One King."

I say Fedor should mail it to Francis for one final fuck you to Dana lol.

Glad we got to see Fedor go against two UFC champs successively in a roped ring. I've enjoyed every org that's popped up at least once, from the gold in Strikeforce and WEC, to the weird in YAMMA pit fighting and Team Fighting FC, to the deranged in King of the Streets and Backyard Beefs.

Great attitude bro, me too!

The Wamma belt is awesome. Miss this era of mma

I’m on a new account but I’ve been watching MMA religiously since 2003.

The first fight I ever watched was Randy vs Liddel 1. I was definitely a Pride fanboy and never had much respect for the UFC.

Hence, I’ve rooted for every competitor to the UFC in hopes someone would slay the giant. That being said, I had a bias going into the affliction events and enjoyed the promotion. However, I would have done without the live music. It was too much a distraction.

It’s unfortunate that no one was able to keep up with the UFC and create some real competition. One is happy reigning in Asia, while PFL and Bellator are effectively feeder organizations for UFC with a few exceptions.

UFC has no art to it. No sense of high drama. A viable alternative would be appreciated.

It's all about being a fight fan, isn't it? Gotta find a scrap to love anywhere. Hell, I've watched some surprisingly technical bar fights after tournaments here in Vegas lol

A lot of the newer posters don't remember the height of the PRIDE vs UFC rivalry, when UFC fans were being shit on constantly for being "the B leagues".
My how the tables have turned over the years, haven't they? It's amazing seeing how huge this sport has become. We may not always like the direction it goes in, but it's alive, thriving, and gains fans every day, something we all prayed for decades ago.

Two of my all time favorite events. Was a genuine American progression of PRIDE (with shitty US rule set, though). The cards were stacked. The UFC didn't have the stranglehold it would enjoy just a few years later, and these cards were about the best collections of non-UFC fighters that anyone could assemble, at the time. A lot of memorable moments and situations on those cards. Obviously Fedor besmirching two men who'd previously held the UFC HW title, and who were still top 10 at the time, Arlovski I believe was still #2 (that was almost half my lifetime ago, so may have been a tad further down, but was definitely top 5). We saw the return of Vitor Belfort back to his true form, genuinely murdering Matt Linland and Terry Martin in the ring. We saw Josh Barnett continue to show why so many believed he'd be the first to truly defeat Fedor. We saw Lil Nog continue to make us question the UFC's decision making by not signing him (which they ultimately did, at a point when he was already on the slide and no longer the fighter he was). We saw Donald Trump at an event that was unrelated to the UFC. And we saw Megadeth.

I appreciated that they took the PRIDE route, as far as making a spectacle of the cards. Big ramps and memorable entrances. The production itself shat all over the UFCs, Trump's funding put to good use. Really wish it hadn't unraveled bc of Barnett's drug failure, bc I'd have continued watching. It had all of the aesthetic that I appreciate, and a truly solid roster. I suppose that the fighters at least dispersed thereafter and made names for themselves in other solid organizations. Strikeforce probably wouldn't have been what it became if not for Affliction eating shit, and DREAM got a couple of those guys, as well. And, obviously, several of those fighters ultimately either returned to or debuted in the UFC. Affliction's foray into hosting cards was brief, but, ultimately, a watershed moment for the sport.

Really great post man.

It would be hard for anyone not being an 'invested fan' at that time, to truly understand the nuances of those match ups and the production and how great it was.

I'm sad this thread isn't gaining more traction. At least THE DON knew it was good.

(I hold no political opinion please enjoy this post as a bit of fun and a way to bump the thread)
While he may have brainbroken libs (for seemingly no good reason), love him or hate him, THE DON has been a lifelong fan of MMA (and lists Fedor as his GOAT). Best friend the sport will ever have in the White House.

Yeah I remember the multitude of “MMA will never be mainstream” threads. I think a lot of old school fans liked being in the niche. It had a hipster kind of vibe to it.

That played into the mystique of the Pride and JMMA. It was a kind of “you’ve probably never heard of it, it’s pretty obscure” snobbishness.

And yes, I shit on UFC fans a lot.

I thought we were in for a brighter future, at the time. I was really excited for these cards, and was thankful they went all in on holding shows. They were paying their guys big money, giving a nice alternative to the UFC, and had a good mix of top tier fighters, known commodities, and up and comers who'd eventually go on to make their own names. Flash in the pan moment, but one I will always remember fondly.

Yes, before it went mainstream,,,

when you had to describe the sport you loved to 'normal people', they would look at you like you were a sicko, a deviant of some sort.
