Adderall and BJJ

My take on adderall and bjj is that it hinders your rolling because it does not allow you to relax which is a huge part of bjj. Now marijuana relaxes you and makes you feel more comfortable when rolling. IMO adderall would be great for drilling and learning new techniques and MJ is great for rolling and not learning new techniques.

I have nothing against marijuana, and often like to have a little bit at night after I get home from training. Especially if I've been training hard or got injured because it's an excellent painkiller. But because it kills pain so effectively, I would never ever do it before rolling. If I got caught in a submission, things would be going pop long before I felt any pain and realised the need to tap.

i have add and adderall doesn't have the same "tweaker" effects on me. I don't get an elevated heart beat, i don't feel "cracked out", Actually it is more of a downer for me. It helps me be not so scatter brained, and keeps me from getting distracted by hotties walking by in the shopping center while im trying to train. I have never noticed any effects, positive or negative, on my stamina strength or endurance, but ive been taking it daily for several years. If you do not have add, the effects are completely different, and you get more of an amphetamine high from it.

no. don't generalize the effects. you are one person of millions who has taken the drug. you have a tolerance, plain and simple. responding differently to the drug is hardly a barometer for who does/doesn't have ADD/ADHD, as is whether or not it makes you 'high'.

i also guarangoddamntee you that your RHR and BP have increased substantially compared to if you weren't on stimulants. that 'downer' effect you're talking about has to do with your increase in focus. you feel more 'normal' yeah? that's because we have a dopamine/seratonin deficiency, and amphetamines dump a LOT of dopamine. that's why the effects are so similar to cocaine. ditto with methylphenidate.

hell, having ADHD in general means your brain is chemically so far out of whack from 'normal' you don't even have basis for comparison. that's why most of us present with bipolar or MDD.

plus, let's not forget that ADHD and Asperger's/HFA are both spectrum disorders, and present so closely to one another that it does get fuzzy in differentiating one from another.

point being, you're not a fucking doctor, don't generalize pharmacological interactions in other people based on your opinion.

interestingly, i found desoxyn (methamphetamine hcl) less 'tweaky' than similar doses of dexy, and desoxyn is pharma-grade, 99.99% eat-your-heart-out-walter-white pure. then again, it's a lot more enantiomerically pure than your street-grade meth, and isn't intended for blatant abuse.

this is really interesting if it's not over your head, and by that i mean the chemistry. i've never heard anybody outside of a lab coat use the word 'concomitantly'.

Adderall and ritalin made me feel like ass. I've been on wellbutrin for a while and had life changing effects.

Vyvanse is critical to my ability to function as a professional, but I have often wondered if it hinders my BJJ. It definitely feeds my obsession with researching techniques when I'm off the mat...

we're supposed to be out foraging and fucking and fighting and being men, damn it.

i get accused of squandering my 'gift' of intelligence because i'm not sitting at a lab bench curing cancer or sitting behind a computer moving money around. fuck those people.

don't worry, you don't really have any such gift.

I don't even know what adderall is... heard of it though. Sad life.

you dont have add, you dont fuck with adderall, it can give you the high of your life, fun as fuck, at the beginning, it will suck your life up later on...

hell, im pretty sure I have add, but sure as fuck wont be getting any addreall, or legaly, if I do, I may just say good bye to my life.

I know this is an old thread, but this is actually a problem for me. Adderall doesn't make me feel jacked up... I wonder if some of y'all even actually have ADHD??? I do, and when I take adderall it calms me. It also kind of makes me tired, which makes me want to reach for the coffee or pre-workout... that said, if I'm training Muay Thai or BJJ, that combo makes me gas out really quick. Like guys that are obviously not in as good of shape as me are able to out last me... my heart feels fine, but my sweating is ridiculous. I'll be drilling with someone and my side of the mat is just soaked... (I feel bad, sometimes Sifu has to mop up after me while I'm still drilling)

people whose brains actually make enough dopamine have wholly different experiences on stimulants. stimulants also make you hella sweaty. i still don't like exercising on them, pre-COVID i'd lift/climb in the morning before taking them, but still tried taking it early enough that i'd be tapered off by evening practice.

are you also on SSRI's? those really fuck up your stamina.

I'm on Lexapro in addition to the adderall. So yeah, I guess I'm on an SSRI. Shit, I hope that's not what's killing my endurance. I can quit the caffeine. I can't really do anything about the prescribed medicines though.

Each to his own but it would take the fun out of BJJ for me. Better than using acai and prayers though I guess.

In cases like yours where athletic ability is important, i'd recommend talking with your doctor about using other modalities, like tianeptine, moclobemide, or selegiline.

Speaking to the thread topic, most testing bodies will put typical CNS stimulants (ie, monoamine releasing agents) like amps on their prohibited lists as a matter of course, but in more complex tasks, like combat sports, these generally won't actually improve competitive success. Actual performance enhancers would be things like bromantane or phenylpiracetam.

I was prescribed adderall for years as a youth, was definitely considered to have non hyperactive ADD by several experts in the field, and I can tell you right now I remember a few of the worst side effects pretty clearly.

Namely insomnia, itchy skin, and difficulty socializing. By high school I noticed I could certainly pay attention better in class on adderall but I had much more difficulty spontaneously talking to classmates / girls than if I skipped the medication in the morning.

Haven't touched the stuff since college now.

For the last few decades my pre workout regimen is one cup of black coffee and a nice kush. Skip the kush if it's a kickboxing day, but it's fine for grappling. Post workout is eat a real meal.

RHR is usually 50-60 bpm. BP after a strong cup of coffee is 128-138/80-85.

Looking back I'm thankful my heart is in good shape after all the ritalin and adderall they had me on from 9-19.

Yah I checked with my local fight doctor. He's a men's health doctor too, he said with my medical history, I should be able to get an exemption for all of the drugs I'm taking. Only prescribed as necessary for me. Everything else is clean.

Man, if I could, I would! Unfortunately, where I live the stuff is still illegal and the wife isn't really a fan LOL

Eventually it'll be nationwide but there are already a ton of states where recreational is legal.

There usually isn't a consistent logic for what substances end up on prohibited lists - substances banned under the rationale of being too bad for an athlete's health rub shoulders with substances banned under the rationale of being too good for an athlete's health - and rulings are generally ad-hoc based on social inertia, without explicit consciousness of what served as the genesis of that inertia in the first place. This essentially stems from a lack of overlaying teleological vision of what ultimate ends one is trying to serve in the first place, and how a decision may be more or less coherent in advancing that telos, but that's another discussion.
