here he is saying Sambo is weak if you look at Makhachev's submissions. He says it's all strength and he wastes too much energy submitting a guy when he could just do it easier and more efficiently if he had real BJJ technique.
Maybe.I'm pretty sure Islam meant Craig Jones.
I just canceled all my bets on Islam and switched them to Volk.
Wish i had seen this sooner.
Oh it was actually Craig Jones that's been training Alex? The same Craig Jones who got schooled in his own art by MMA fighter Sean Brady?
Craig Jones is a legit no-gi submission champion, but MMA grappling, that is grappling while someone can punch you in the face and elbow you, is night and day.
About the only thing I feel Craig can teach Volk that might help him is a Hail-Mary heel hook or straight ankle lock, that is meant to catch Islam off guard. Though Craig wasn’t always a Danaher student, Khabib and the Dagestani’s visited Renzo’s and word was, they were “Uncomfortable with it” according to Danaher, basically implying the pure submission attacks unique to DDS found success in the non-MMA environment…
The one chance Volk can have besides a points victory via striking, is a Hail Mary ankle lock of sorts.
Defending subs is part of it, but it's just as likely he could get pounded out or simply controlled on the ground for a UD. So he's basically getting 33% out of 100% of the possible bad outcomes covered if it goes to the ground.
Craig has been with volk for 2 years now. This isn't someone he specifically brought in to imitate islam. That said, craig jones power pin system is basically a love letter to khabib's style. He's been studying khabib and islam's top game for a while, so I'm sure he's a very valuable person to have around.
On top of that, Volk has D1 wrestling coaches and he got training time in with chechen wrestlers for this camp. It's not like he's relying on BJJ coaches only.

Yeah, I watched a little bit of his match with Gordon Ryan and thought about the number of times either of them could've punched each other.Craig Jones is a legit no-gi submission champion, but MMA grappling, that is grappling while someone can punch you in the face and elbow you, is night and day.
If that's the case, making sure the whole world knows you've been training with Craig Jones was probably a bad call.
Is the goal to turn Volk into a BJJ wizard in a few months who can submit Islam? I think he'd have been better off training with a high-level wrestler, especially one experienced in MMA.
