ABC chief 'appalled' at Till weightcut, calls for corner suspension

There's a proven way to solve this, One FC did it, but UFC certainly won't.

This is the solution right here..There is already an org using it effectively. It is probably not perfect but way better than the current one.

If he doesn't make weight (as he has now on several occasions) you definitely can determine (and enforce) that he has to move up, as they did with Kelvin before him.
yes, but unless they make a rule, this is always something that they decide for some but not others.
Plenty of fighters missed weight a lot more times, yet they are allowed to stay.

IMO they need to get rid of WC'ing

Can someone who has cut weight explain this retarded behaviour to me? Is it better to cut weight like that and almost die instead of going up a weight class and feel good the fight day instead? Never understod this. Almost died when cutting? Move up in weight class then, smartass

If someone is willing to go too far only to have a size advantage in a fight, go for it. Nobody else should care.
healthy fighters make better fights.

i am sure that with reduced weightcutting we will see better fights so i prefer to see minimal weightcutting in mma.

The whole weight game bothers me more than the PED game.

Not sure I should really care about either honestly. I've come to the view that fighters are like strippers, toss em some dollars and watch em dance. Otherwise they got no real use in my sorted chapters.

fight day weighinn would clear that up pretty good and get everyone to fight in their natural weight class . We did it in Highschool wrestling why are these guys exempt from cheating .

I've said this for years. Why not implement new weigh in rules?
I think the regular weigh in time is good, BUT, have a second weigh in right before you walk to the ring and you can't be weighing more than the next weight class above you? So if you are fighting in 170, you can't weigh more than 185.
There is no reason why a fighter fighting in 170lbs should be weighing more than a MW fighter or in some cases almost LHW.

That would introduce some pretty major downsides for the promoter. Promoter is screwed and fans are super pissed if the main event, multiple fights, etc are scrapped as the fighters are entering the cage. That would be a nightmare. No promotion would ever want this type of rule.

I absolutely agree. But the thing is, UFC will never do it. It would mess up almost entire roster. People who cut huge amounts of weight have only themselves to blame. Minor promotions like One FC can allow themselves to regulate the cutting issue, but UFC will not care unless someone, God forbid, dies during weight cut.

The question is - why would you upload this in the first place? These days athletic commissions also have internet access, at least keep it quiet if you wish to abuse weight cut so much...
The video was put out by his sponsor. It's full of dramatic captions describing how hard he tried to make weight and how terribly he suffered in the process. Below there are the screenshots of what it says at the end. I suppose this was a damage control move, but they didn't think it through, considering how badly it's backfiring.

Back when i was 10 years younger I used to routinely cut 15-17 lbs to make 145lbs for tournaments and mma fights. It wasn't that difficult for me, nothing like Tills weight cut. Just strategically cut out excess water and sodium in the 3-4 days leading up to weigh ins. A little sweating the night before and then light exercise in the sauna for a bit. Always felt perfectly fine the next day.

If i were to ever go back to competing in grappling again I wouldn't cut weight anymore. Even though I felt fine, it definitely can't be good for you in the long term.

I definitely think they need to find a way to minimize weight cutting. A few lbs is fine and probably wont hurt anyone, but when you are going 15+ lbs that is going to eventually cause some problems.

To put in context, Rockhold is easily 1 of the biggest MWs. Rockhold says he walks around at 215. Till claims to also walk around at 215, if this is true, even at MW, Till would be a big MW. Yet he's almost killing himself to make WW

no.
As long as you allow people to cut weight, you can't determine who should (or not) be allowed to do anything.

MMA needs to ban weight cutting period.
There's absolutely no good reason for it.
It'll never happen...

Its apart of wrestling, boxing, powerlifting, MMA, BJJ, Judo, Muay Thai. Ect

Yeah but Conor never missed. Till has missed twice now, which means he knows he can't make it but still sticking to it. That is a sort of ducking of the higher weight class.

It's a fair point. I guess I see it more as trying to maintain or hold on to an advantage rather than ducking a higher weight class.

But your point is taken, none of the fighter's I've listed have missed weight. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the UFC or athletic commissions need to step in to stop dangerous weight cutting.

The funny thing is, I think the corner thought by releasing this footage that it would make Darren seem laudable and make people forgive him for not making weight. Instead, all it does it make it seem like he is a cheater and dumb to boot; a person that is willing to destroy his body, risk his life, and all because he is afraid of fighting men his own size. This is the SECOND time he has missed weight in the UFC, and he is clearly in phenomenal shape, so it ain't like he Big Rigg and just not trying. And, this ain't like Cyborg @ 140, where the UFC gave her no choice and made her go thru hell to save Ronda's neck - this is ALL on Till and his team and is inexcusable.

yet the coward rose 6 places in the WW rankings.
Which is clown car central and makes no sense. He has not won a fight @ welterweight since beating Cerrone. Should Cyborg be ranked the number one bantamweight contender since she beat Holly at 145? Let's put Cain at number one at Flyweight while we're at it too.

Please just weigh them the day of the flight!

A minute before, an hour before, 7 hours before, whatever! Meme them make weight the day before too, or not!

You see, the UFC doesn't want welterweight to become the fighters from two divisions down because you couldn't fairly compare them to former welterweight champions, or any fighters, who fought dozens of pounds heavier.

It also squishes their second best division into their best division (at least historically). It's a mess.

In collegiate wrestling you miss weight and your team doesn’t have a replacement your team forfeits the match. Start treating missed weight as a forfeit and it’ll reduce this crap.
