A Sinister fist tutorial:

I was able to land with a lot more power on my sparring partners using this method. However, he didn't admit that I was hitting harder, he just got a little annoyed and accused my of trying to "thumb his eye." He wasn't buying it when I explained that I was arching my wrist and trying to land with the front two knuckles. He had never heard of it before. But his head definitely snapped a little bit more with this method. The right cross to the body also was deadly when landing on the front two knuckles.

Jaja! Good stuff, both of you.

First session I was partnered up against a guy who suckered me into a pyramid scheme a while back (I was 17, wanted a summer job), but I didn't have any hard feelings about it, I guess he did because during a thai pad drill (100 knees on one pad while getting punched in the gut with the other) he kept nailing me with low blows.

I told him to keep them up and he just kept doing it, then we get to sparring he goes straight for a kick to the chops, I told him to watch for it, we take a 10 second break, he does it again.

So I threw a jab to the body with the knuckles, speared him pretty good, then one up towards the right side of his face to bring his hands up away from the left side of is body and then I whipped a right hook with the palm down (like how joe louis does in the video, foreman did it in his old age really well too) landing with the top of the pointer knuckle, he made a sound like he was about to puke as he collapsed, was on the ground in the fetal position for 5 minutes after that and then he just left the class.

next two guys I sparred I dropped and dazed with a jab, landing with the pointer and middle knuckle on the chin (dropped) and nose (dazed, said his face went numb)

I thought this picture was very relevant to this thread, notice how the first knuckle is aligned with the forearm:

Sorry it won't let me post the actual picture

Hey Sinister, great video. Years ago, my gym covered the topic in a similiar fashion but I greatly enjoyed the depth you went into and it helped me rehash some old techniques. Good job!

I'd take this dude out. KO. Under 2 rounds. KarateStylist trained me.
^^^ T Starter's a dangerous striker.... and popular with girls too! >> Only 1 of those is true with me

^^^ Came over here 'cause I was put on a 'tight-leash' @ the NLM "Blowup" T.

EDIT: A lot to digest.... still digesting....

Stopped watching at sight of Johnny Trocco shirt to post on how awesome it was. Will now resume epic vid.

You guys asked for it, so finally here it is. My preferred method of fist formation for punching and why:

* vidchop *
^^^ this vid is very sophisticated,,, it will take me some time to work through it....

^^^ Incidentally, just posted {a sophisticated} answer as to why TMA is not seen in MMA,,, you know strictly adopted by the competitors.... bashed of course....

^^^ My simple counterpoint or contrasting point to your really precise presentation.... the object of the karate fist is to form a "brick," with which to hurt the opponent....

There are some differences from your guidance & in the actual mechanics in practice.... as well as overlapping similarities in actual practice....

Yours,

KarateStylist

Did try it.

It's not easy to form your fist like that once it's in a glove but love it.
Nice hooks, straights, uppercuts. Also, punching from weird angles feels natural.

May have tunnel vision a bit tho.
I tend to kick from the lower part of the shin to sometimes a half foot / half shin kick.
It gives me alot of range and maximize velocity. Was so busy toying with the new fist. I've back way to far from the bag and sprain ankle. Doesn't hurt unless I'm groing down a flight of stairs.

Life is a bitch.
At least I can still do upper body work.

my coaches always told me to hit with the index and middle fingers, but reading Jack Dempsey book he suggest to hit with the pinky and ring finger for an optimal punch.

what you guys think?

It seems that even with pointing your fist down it is easy to roll out and sprang it. Any way to alleviate this?

Like this vid....

^^^ Noticed you are doing an abbreviated "tile" exercise @ the same time with the bag hits....

I've got to watch it over & over to get it to sink in.... the totality of the body mechanics....

I directed 'Stormin' Norman Parke to this video! So if he becomes a KO machine, I think Sinister deserves a shout out in his post fight interview with Joe Rogan :icon_lol:

Always an honor when anyone gives another person trouble in Combat Sports due to something I've said. Ja!

If he ever wants to visit Tocco's here in Vegas, the door is open.

I like the more observant, less flamboyant version of you.

That's ace mate! Think Norman's going over to the US soon to train for a good while so he may well stroll in your door some day!

aligning the knuckles with the rest of the arm is the way I learned how to punch in karate.

Amen to this. Teaching people to align their fist so they strike with the two large knuckles is key! Learned this in karate!

Haha same here! Well, TKD for me. Looking back it's funny that I learned which knuckles to make contact with and how to align your wrist in a style that doesn't punch much at all.

Great tutorial man. The little details that go into how you make a fist can make a big difference.
