A broken hand obviously diminishes your cardio

Cool, so does a leg and back injury that Merab fought with just in order to accommodate the challenger's religious practice of Ramadan.

Was Merab's leg and back fractured? All fighters have nagging injuries, Umar himself had an injury going into the fight. I'd say they were on a level playing field going into the fight and it was competitive until Umar gassed in the final rounds which the pain and adrenaline drain from an broken hand will do.

Merab didn't accommodate Umar. He was shamed into taking the fight after blatantly ducking Umar while calling out the likes of O'Malley and Yan whom he had already beaten.

Props to Merab for earning the win but let's not pretend he wasnt doing everything possible to avoid that fight.

If you’re Umar, you’re not letting anything get in your way to the title not a cracked hand, not anything. Make no mistake. It was Merab who stopped him.

Merab our lord and savior!

Jokes aside, you all remember how Khamzat did against Usman and the explanation was because of broken hand he couldn’t finish Usman.
Then we all remember how much shit Costa got for not KOing Rockhold, in that case it didn’t matter that he had a broken hand.

Maybe broken hands only matter for certain fighters performances and especially cardio?

First things first: I picked Merab to win.

But a fracture, and one as painful as a hand, affects endurance badly.
Any of you that have trained know that severe pain makes you gas.

That's because (not bro-science, nor rocket science neither):

1. Intense pain is an stressor. When you are at 90-95% of your max heart rate, adding a stressor makes you redline.

2. During strenuous effort, endorphins released go mainly to your muscles to "trick" them into keep going.
When hurt, those endorphins are almost entirely headed to i.e. his hand.

So both muscular and cardiovascular fatigue kicks much harder and earlier.

A badly broken hand is not an excuse. Shit happens. I still believe Merab would have won, but that injury left us without a great fight.
Merab had broken hand against yan (he broke it 1 week before fight) merab had hard time puting on gloves but still got out there and fucked up yan 50-45!
So please shut up

It had nothing to do with the hand- he lost because the Dagestani was inferior to the other fighter.

Merab wasn't 100% either. That granite chin and phenomenal gas tank of his will make him a problem for most in the division. Look at his resume already, it's stacked with names.

try to train with this let alone fight "ohh i broke my hand" fuck you!1000005289.jpg

I'd leave cardio out of it. Breaking your hand limits your striking and grappling quite severely. Being lock in cage with another human trying to punch your head off and you got broking hand isn't a very good position to be in. You don't want to be like Faber and try to fight after both hands break, that was just ridiculous to watch.

I'm down for watching a rematch anytime.

its umar's own fault he broke his hand though. And he didn't tell his team that it happened

dont want a broken hand? clean up your striking technique. get a better cutman to wrap them up.

have any of the top 5 p4p guys in the last few years broken a hand in a fight? khabib, jones, usman, izzy, pereira, volk ?

btw this was whittakers hand, that he broke in round 1, and still beat Romero.

Fighters are coasting on adrenaline through the fight, but even had his hand not broken he would’ve gassed the same.

Merab was on antibiotics and had to limit his preparation for this fight, but he didn’t let it stop him.

Is Umar more skilled? Maybe, but he doesn’t have the heart to win.

Exactly. Two bodies collided and one held up better than the other. A fights a fight. Shit happens.
I never understood why those people always try to hurt each other anyway. Like, in every single fight, it’s a huge problem. It’s not nice at all.

Lol he dominated two rounds broke hand and gassed in other fight was never this close

If umar couldn't finish sandhagen who is a patently weaker grappler than merab and Umar couldn't finish him. If you're not going to finish merab early.... good luck.

i thought it was a great fight, it was fight of the night, won the bonus money.
it just didnt go the dagestani way.

Who cares about his hand? It's not Merab's problem. Maybe Umar should have worked on his striking instead of jerking off so that his hands don't break in the 1st.
