Maybe my sarcasm detector is broken, but Serge Redding is for real.

To the TS:

Its not totaly strict. Its called an olympic press and employs some hip drive. No one does them anymore cause split jerks are a more efficient way to put weight above your head.

The olympic press went out of style bc of problems judging the lift, excessive leaning back to press more weight. (Reddings technique was good though).

Mark Rippetoe suggested in Starting Strength that the olympic press was "likely eliminated due to a desire to shorten the meet."

The criteria for judging the olympic press was that layback could not exceed the vertical line between the most anterior aspect of the armpit and the most posterior aspect of the buttocks.

Well that's hardly fair at all. Some people have bigger butts.

the asian guy at like 1:13,

when he squats, his thighs point out when going down, then go parallel when coming up

is that on purpose?

No. That's something you should try to avoid.

Actually, although a lot of people say it's bad for your knees, a lot of olympic lifters do that intentionally...supposedly they can lift more that way. I think it was some chinese lifter that developed the technique, and you see a lot of the chinese lifters in particular lifting that way. Here's 2004 gold medalist Zhang Guozheng doing squats that way:

yeah thats the dude i was talking about.

I see some olympics guys do that,

so the general consensus is that its bad right?

Bad in the sense that it places more strain on your knees...but if you're competing and it helps you lift more weight, then I think that's a secondary concern.

Yeah thats true,

if you only get one shot, go for it,

It's just bad form. They do it because their glute and adductor strength is weak compared to their quadricep strength.

But he won gold

No way can he have bad form, he must be doing it on purpose

No. Just because he is won oly gold, it does not mean that he does not have muscle imbalances. It just means that those imbalances are not all that important for the C&J and Snatch.

i see a lot of the oly guys do that on front squats/ cleans. never on back squats though. i feel more power doing it that way on my front squats also but stopped due to the fact that i probably shouldnt be doing it that way.

This is not a technique anybody developed - this happens naturally for many people with high bar squats or front squats and heavy weight. It should still be avoided.

A comment on that squat video I posted claims that Yoshinobu Miyake advocated lifting that way. I know, using a youtube comment as a source is as shady as it gets, but it seems rather specific to just be made up. Also, watching Zhang in that squat vid, it really looks controlled and intentional. There's no doubt it's harder on your knees, but if he can lift more like that isn't that all that really matters? It seems to be working out OK for him.
