Charles is basically in his prime right now. Great grappler with nice striking. Gets dropped but comes back. Can sub you standing or on the ground. He's currently 32 I believe.

Interestingly a lot of fighters he has lost to were in their prime while Charles was relatively young. Curious on how Current Prime Charles does against the following fighters in their prime at 155:

Cowboy
Felder
Edgar
Max
Pettis

FWIW I believe he lost to Jim Miller when he was younger but then won the rematch years later when Charles was closer to his prime.

I really think Charles moving up and filling out has helped with his durability which in turn has helped him build his confidence and not shut down mentally which he used to do.

I think Prime Frankie, Max and Pettis beat him. It's insane how underrated Prime, athletic Pettis is on this forum. He did some otherworldly shit. Max is just a tough matchup for him and has very underrated TDD. Frankie is just Frankie. I mean, that guy at his best is an all timer.

Let's just appreciate Charlie. The guy is such a breath of fresh air as a person and a champion.

Cowboy - Charles TKO’s him within 1 round.
Felder - Charles by decision or late sub.
Edgar - Charles hurts him then ties him in a knot.
Max - ..competitive…Charles by close unanimous decision (48-47)?
Pettis - Charles by whatever he wants in round 2-3.

edit - i didnt consider the prime vs prime part…i dont feel like putting any more thought into it so fuck it

I don't know about the hypothetical prime vs prime matchups. If he rematched them today, only Holloway would be competitive.

I don’t think he’s unbeatable but man, hard not to respect a guy who’s got that many finishes. What makes it crazier is he’s not even “old” and is going to keep adding to his submission/finish record. Insane, he will be a hall of famer when his career is over.

Him having the opportunity to work his way up and fight guys on his level due to those losses helped him lock in finishes and build his confidence. Charles gets in the pocket in striking exchanges now. He looks for subs after making incredibly aggressive moves regardless of position.

He will lose badly in the future. I don't give a shit. He's one of the most fun guys to watch. He wins spectacularly because he's so vulnerable and willing to fight rather than stall or dominate positions in a fight outright. And when he does win, it makes me happy because he's so fucking happy. War Charles.

Pettis was the goat for like 3 fights, never forget.

Obviously a lot of those guys are washed now so yeah Charles obliterates them lol

I mean Current Charles vs those opponents in their Primes.
Gotcha, I truly believe he beats all except max and probably still pettis. Pettis was legitimately a very very good fighter in his prime, I could still see Charles possibly winning though. I think max is an absolutely terrible match up for him though

Pettis always had the problem with being put on the cage and backed up and it looks like Charles has gotten really good at pressuring and attacking in the clinch

Most of those guys are retired or really close to being retired. There is no point watching them rematch now.

Don’t think he will be some super dominant champ but I’m happy to see him work his way up and solidify himself as the champion. I thought Dustin would work him, and he had a pretty rough first round but he was never down and out, he kept fighting back and fought an insane pace. A pace Dustin couldn’t keep up with, I was impressed that he fought the adversity again and finished Dustin impressively.
