Dragonlord Fantasy Casting Vol. 17: CABLE

ZcMA6Ne.jpeg

Ever since last year when they announced Cable would appear in Deadpool 2, there's been a constant buzz about who would be playing the time-travelling mutant. Cable is the hottest role in Hollywood currently and almost every actor wants to nab the part. Numerous actors have been rumored for the role for several months. The circle is steadily closing in and they'll probably announce an official casting in the next few days.

So I decided to dust off my half-finished project from last year and I've compiled a list of 25 actors that have been mentioned as potential candidates for Cable by the media and fans and added a few of my personal choices, and have graded them on their suitability for the role.

Here's my criteria for actors playing Cable:

- Age: Ideal would be 40 to 55 years old, somebody that can portray the role for 15 years if needed be.

- Height: Between 5'10" to 6'3".

- Physique: Doesn't have to be swole, just not scrawny and good potential to bulk up a little.

- Voice: Ranging from normal to manly. No Steve Buscemi type voice.

- Acting: As long as he doesn't suck .

- Personal Preference: Ranging from "don’t like his recent works" to "elbows too pointy."

Just for fun, vote for your favorite Cable actors by Liking them (multiple votes allowed) and we'll tally the votes after a few days/weeks. It'll be interesting to see who the public wants (my guess is Stephen Lang).

25. Keira Knightley
oZQbUpK.jpeg

Name: Keira Knightley

Age: 32 (born March 26, 1985)

Height: 5'7"

Credits: Pirates of the Caribbean films, Pride & Prejudice, Love Actually, Anna Karenina

Remarks: Mentioned as a joke during the Deadpool post-credits scene, Keira Knightley's name has been attached for the Cable role and that's why she's here. (Keira’s spot in here might be replaced by another actor in the future)

Cable Grade: F

24. Neal McDonough
12PZ62z.jpeg

Name: Neal McDonough

Age: 51 (born February 13, 1966)

Height: 6'0"

Credits: Captain America: The First Avenger, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, Minority Report

Remarks: Neal's name has come up a few times and let's face it, it’s because of his gray hair, as most of the actors up for the role. Could be a decent Cable but as right now, he's too played out for me seeing him for the past two years as the cheesy, cornball villain Damian Darhk in Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.

Cable Grade: D

23. Kevin Nash
AduYdcU.jpeg

Name: Kevin Nash

Age: 57 (born July 9, 1959)

Height: 6'9"

Credits: Magic Mike XXL, The Punisher, John Wick, DOA: Dead or Alive

Remarks: Too tall. Acting range is limited. Too slow. Every time I see him, he seems to be moving at a lumbering pace.

Cable Grade: D

22. Dolph Lundgren
PiCg0x2.jpeg

Name: Dolph Lundgren

Age: 59 (born November 3, 1957)

Height: 6'5"

Credits: The Expendables, Kindergarten Cop 2, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning

Remarks: Face, height and physique are good but there's just something about the way Dolph speaks that is just a notch above Sylvester Stallone. Acting is iffy but passable I guess.

Cable Grade: D+

21. Henry Rollins
c9ysLV0.jpeg

Name: Henry Rollins

Age: 56 (born February 13, 1961)

Height: 5'9"

Credits: The Devil's Tomb, Johnny Mnemonic, Bad Boys II

Remarks: Don’t really have a strong opinion regarding Henry. Might be too psycho looking for the role though.

Cable Grade: C-

20. Kyle Chandler
unPCNBG.jpeg

Name: Kyle Chandler

Age: 51 (born September 17, 1965)

Height: 6'1"

Credits: Friday Night Lights, Bloodline, Zero Dark Thirty, Super 8

Remarks: Not really a good fit for the role. Kyle was rumored to be one of the reasons why Deadpool director Tim Miller clashed with star Ryan Reynolds and eventually exited the sequel. Miller allegedly wanted Kyle as Cable but Reynolds didn't.

Cable Grade: C-

19. Jeffrey Dean Morgan
0YExon7.jpeg

Name: Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Age: 50 (born April 22, 1966)

Height: 6'2"

Credits: The Walking Dead, Watchmen, Supernatural, The Losers, Magic City

Remarks: If Jeffrey didn't join The Walking Dead, I'd rate him higher. But as of now, I'm sick and tired of looking him at his trying-too-hard-to-be-cool Negan character in TWD. He’s overplayed for me. Even when I'm not watching the show, Negan's smug face with that stupid bat is always splashed across the various news sites.

Cable Grade: C+

18. David Harbour
I74bVNi.jpeg

Name: David Harbour

Age: 41 (born April 10, 1975)

Height: 6’3”

Credits: Stranger Things, The Newsroom, A Walk Among the Tombstones, Black Mass

Remarks: David has been in talks with Fox to play Cable and has even undergone screen testing for the role. Not a bad casting but David is still 41, a bit young for Cable. A few years from now, he would be age-appropriate for Cable. David will next be seen reprising his Jim Hopper role in Stranger Things season 2.

Cable Grade: B-

17. Sean Bean
v2YVE0n.jpeg

Name: Sean Bean

Age: 57 (born April 17, 1959)

Height: 5’10”

Credits: Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Patriot Games

Remarks: If he could lose a few pounds, he’d be a good Cable. But why would you cast someone for a major character that’s expected to carry a new franchise with X-Force and then just have them killed?

Cable Grade: B-

16. Liam Neeson
tDtetBP.jpeg

Name: Liam Neeson

Age: 64 (born June 7, 1952)

Height: 6’4”

Credits: Taken, The Grey, Schindler’s List, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Remarks: Liam has cornered the old man bad-ass action hero niche for nearly a decade. So it’s no surprise that Liam’s name has always been attached for the Cable part for a long time. He’d be a great Cable for sure but the age is an issue though especially if he is expected to lead the X-Force for the next 10+ years.

Cable Grade: B

15. Ron Perlman
fMAU3YK.jpeg

Name: Ron Perlman

Age: 66 (born April 13, 1950)

Height: 6’1”

Credits: Hellboy, Pacific Rim, Sons of Anarchy, Scorpion King 3: The Battle for Redemption

Remarks: Turning 67 years old this year, Ron would have been a superb Cable. Time is just not on his side. At least he still has Hellboy 3. Oh wait…

Cable Grade: B

14. Gerard Butler
30kSAiZ.jpeg

Name: Gerard Butler

Age: 47 (born November 13, 1969)

Height: 6’2”

Credits: 300, Olympus Has Fallen, Law Abiding Citizen, Gods of Egypt, Chasing Mavericks

Remarks: Gerard is perfect for Cable in every way except for his heavy accent which is just wrong for the part and half of the time indecipherable. The Scottish actor can next be seen battling a storm of epic proportions in Geostorm.

Cable Grade: B

13. Joe Manganiello
GpK9FNR.jpeg

Name: Joe Manganiello

Age: 40 (born December 28, 1976)

Height: 6’5”

Credits: True Blood, Sabotage, Magic Mike XXL, Pee-wee's Big Holiday

Remarks: Joe is attached to play Deathstroke in the solo Batman movie. But now that The Batman has been delayed and the script rumored to be rewritten from scratch, it’s unknown if Deathstroke will still appear in the film. Based on his impressive physique, Joe was born to play a comic book character (not counting Flash Thompson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man) and landing the Cable role would be a bigger catch than Deathstroke.

Cable Grade: B

11. Pierce Brosnan
KQVBdCt.jpeg

Name: Pierce Brosnan

Age: 63 (born May 16, 1953)

Height: 6’2”

Credits: Goldeneye, The Thomas Crown Affair, Die Another Day, The November Man

Remarks: Seen with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in a photo last January, it was once heavily speculated that Pierce could be the next Cable. Those talks has since died down (could still be the Deadpool 2 villain though). As unorthodox it may be, I do see some potential especially if you’ve seen him in his recent films – The November Man, Survivor and No Escape. Pierce is entering Liam Neeson territory and he’s very good at it.

Cable Grade: B

10. Michael Shannon
4WvWcyG.jpeg

Name: Michael Shannon

Age: 42 (born August 7, 1974)

Height: 6’3”

Credits: Man of Steel, Midnight Special, Boardwalk Empire, Nocturnal Animals, The Iceman

Remarks: Michael is supposed to be the frontrunner for the part. Not bad but there are a few better actors for the role. It would be fun though if Michael got the role since he’s a known blabbermouth and would spoil a lot of stuff for Deadpool 2. I’m shocked he’s still 42, he looks 10 years older.

Cable Grade: B

9. Karl Urban
Y3LcDmM.jpeg

Name: Karl Urban

Age: 44 (born June 7, 1972)

Height: 6’1”

Credits: Dredd, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Riddick

Remarks: Rather than wait for a Dredd movie sequel that might never come to fruition, Karl should move on to what may be his biggest role yet. He’s great at action and can bring some serious heat to the role. Plus his experience with the Star Trek films has honed his deadpan style of humor.

Cable Grade: B

8. Brad Pitt
hPzFY2O.jpeg

Name: Brad Pitt

Age: 53 (born December 18, 1963)

Height: 5’11”

Credits: Fight Club, Inglourious Basterds, World War Z, Fury, Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Remarks: Brad was officially in talks to play Cable but the deal didn’t push through. They even went so far as to do a concept art of Cable for Deadpool 2 with Brad’s image. As he displayed in Fury, Brad has that leadership quality that would make him a great leader of X-Force.

Cable Grade: B+

7. Stephen Lang
PmoGPXb.jpeg

Name: Stephen Lang

Age: 64 (born July 11, 1952)

Height: 5’10”

Credits: Avatar, Don’t Breathe, Into the Badlands, Terra Nova, Conan the Barbarian

Remarks: Stephen is the No. 1 actor people want to play Cable ever since they saw him in James Cameron’s Avatar (he was 55-56 back then). He still looks good now at 64 even though he’s not as buffed as before. Eight years ago, Stephen would have been absolutely perfect for Cable but at 64 (turning 65 this year), I would prefer someone a tad younger to play the role for the next decade.

Cable Grade: B+

6. Russell Crowe
iof6YEy.jpeg

Name: Russell Crowe Age: 52 (born April 7, 1964) Height: 6’0”

Credits: Gladiator, Man of Steel, L.A. Confidential, The Nice Guys, American Gangster

Remarks: Russell passes every Cable criteria I have. He still looks good in action in his last few movies and his movie punches still look and sound devastating. He'll next be seen playing Dr. Henry Jekyll in Tom Cruise's The Mummy.

Cable Grade: A-
