i have a stable job but it's close enough that I can drive there or use public transportation. I do plan moving out before 30 but now is just not the right time. I do pay rent of $500.

I have a white all American coworker who bashes all the peeps at work who still live at home. He's just got me thinking that's all

If you're struggling and you have to move in with your parents, I can't fault anybody for that. I'm kinda there right now, too. Pitch in and you'll be fine. Your co-worker sounds elitist.

My parents never charged me rent past 18, i'd be out of there for sure if i had to cough up 500

If you're already paying $500 for rent, then why would you be living at home?

The ONLY reason to still live at home past, say, 23 is to live rent-free.

1. Pretend it's some racial shit
2. ???
3. Profit

I was living at home at 25. I could've moved out and lived with a friend if the folks let me slide on rent for 2-3 months first but it would've been a stretch and I'd have preferred living alone more.

You mentioned the white bread co-worker and the "Asians living at home." I know there are cultural differences depending on families. My Asian friends lived at home until try out-earned their parents and then just switched roles sort of. That used to be a big thing with single Italian guys that many don't get: if you're unwed by a certain (vague) age, you're supposed to stay at home and be a good son to mom first and go out sniffing for poon/wives second. Simplifying this of course.

At least you're paying rent. Get another job, stack cash, and job hunt.

There are unhealthy 25 year olds who live home and healthy ones..anyone who puts all over 20 YO people living home in the same boat is an asshole and should be ignored....Pay your share, contribute to the positive vibe in the house, and it's all good..

I cannot imagine living with my parents past 18. Not because I think it's a bad thing, but because I left so early. Save your money for as long as you all are comfortable with it. I wish I could have.

for 500, you better be getting hot meals and laundry done by moms or they just dont love you.

Where I'm from its really diverse and there's a lot of people that live at home till they're married basically. Cultural thing for you?

I wouldn't do it if i had to pay that much rent though. The big benefit is saving up money, and depending on where you live, you could have your own apt or split one for about what you're paying.

My Chinese and Filipino friend still live at home. They're both over 40. In Hawaii this is common.

everyone has a different situation, its best to just do what you have to do to survive until you get where you want. Im thankful than my parents had my support until i was ready, i left when i finished college at 27.... you're not the only one.

If the kid is on the right track (stable job, saving every month for downpayment ect.) is it wrong the the parents to profit on their offspring and delay the act of the kid from moving out by taking their free cash flow? Is the parent entitled to some freedom once the kid is an adult? Or is the kid entitled to free rent for being born? (lets assume the parents are middle class and not in need of the 500 in the first place and the kid is on the right track)

I'm a bit older, have a working professional career and still live with my folks. Funny thing is I pay the same as you.

When people mock, I just say I get a 1500 sq ft house, right by subway station, with a great backyard for $500 a month.

Its smarter for me to save up, better than living in some beat up 300 sq ft for $900, not to mention utility fees, and other stuff

its not about legal obligations but doing your kid a solid. I'd feel like a dick taking 500 a month from my struggling kid so he can sleep the bedroom I provided for him. We both know todays 18 year olds are far from adult.
