At least he’s self aware that he sucks
Not sure I've ever seen anyone so ready to throw literally anyone under the bus. It's an incredible talent he has.
I think generally all star games should be a honor and having them be real games only happened because at that time there were so few entertainment options people were looking for any reason to celebrate. Like making the Pro Bowl mattered I don't know who decided there needs to be an actual game.
The NBA has something with the skills, 3 points and dunk contest(if there was participation). Theres a reason the NFL copied it. They should just work with that maybe replace the all star game with a 4th event. I remember as a kid not getitng why people cared about the All Star game and why it just didn't end with the dunk contest.
I used to enjoy the pro bowl and NBA All Star game, and when they would go at it to prove something.
But shit I get it why they don't want to go hard and risk injury. Is what it is.
I would like more variety in skills competitions, and I'd like to see the actual top guys at their positions compete. A few sports related carnival games would be cool too. But whatever it is what it is.
It's interesting. I mean, there's going hard like playoff basketball level. Then there's regular season level. Then there's going 50%. Then there's like going 10% which is like what happens in all star games.
I like to think even just going 50% reduces chances of injury immensely. I suppose at the end of the day it's all a by-product of protecting assets. Even if there's a small chance of severe injury owners are gonna get pissed if it happens to one of their guys.
The league wasn't like that for the 50 years previous to this era. I recently watched some highlights of 1990's/early 2000's pro bowls and all star games and its like night and day. A product actually worth watching. If Kobe was still with us he would probably giving the league and players an earful. The league has morphed into a bunch of primadonnas that can't play their own sport. Most of them can't even play 65 games to be eligible for accolades.
Very true, but I think in general though sports salaries have "hockey sticked" upwards and along with that protecting your star players/assets has too as your point on load management suggests.
And with rather cancerous social media, I think fans have become horrible too. This was really apparent in boxing when as soon as someone loses one fight they get quickly put into the "overrated can" but no shortage of online mobs of haters. So much so guys in their primes were disincentivized to fight each other until they each got old and the sport was designed to have a whole host of champs unblemished records as opposed to having the best fighters fight each other into having records that were more typical of prior hall of famers who'd often have over 10 losses .
I could only imagine the online fallout if a superstar got seriously injured in an all-star game. I think a lot of folks complaining about the lack of competition would be trolling the hell out of a situation where players and coaches they didn't like get injured in an ASG.
I don't disagree, with any of that. Its all true. What is hard to understand is how we got here. Certainly through the eras from Wilt, to Dr J, to Larry/Magic, MJ, Kobe/Shaq, and even for some of Lebron's era this was not an issue. These guys get paid to play a sport but they can't play one ASG because oh noes, injury. I mean the F'in NFL made the Pro Bowl flag football. They bitchified their own sport. This would be the equivalent of Dana White saying no more punches to the face guys.
People less and less are dealing with risk I suppose. The book Coddling of the American Mind is pretty good insight into the extreme mental and physical "safety" people are using. Needing safe spaces in Colleges to protect from ideas you don't like, and physically around kids not playing outdoors, schools scrapping playgrounds after one kid falls off and busts a leg. There's the fear of litigation around some of those things, especially when some people claim mean things being said is like being subjected to physical violence.
A few more brain scans of mushed up brain athletes who do crazy shit and don't be surprised if people call for contact sports being banned completely.
