BTW, I think basketball is now in a spot where NFL football is, where good offense has an advantage over good defense by game design. Big Honey was right on the money when he said offense has an advantage because defense has to react to offense, and well oiled and executed offense, especially with the level of shooting talent out there - buttressed by greater global talent (see above, the top 5 MVP candidates are ALL foreign players, something that would have been unheard of not long ago), inherently gives offense the advantage.
In NFL, I've felt for a while that basically rank your QBs and that's who'll go to the end. The odds of winning with a Trent Dilfer level quarterback are so slim these days, I'd say it's next to none.
The leagues protect their assets (star players health) more these days which adds to the advantage for offense. The NFL has no desire having backups play because starting QBs getting slammed and maimed by defensive linemen. Likewise, the NBA has no desire to see the players who sell tickets get injured by the Dillon Brooks of the league. So personally, I think it's a mix of the two factors seemingly debated here; how much each contributes is in the eye of the beholder.
