The most brutal sport in the world. That’s what we call it. Those considered for this award have fought and dominated not only worthy opponents, but the most worthy opponents our sport has to offer. They’ve reached the pinnacle of our sport, faced the most intimidating kind of adversity, and dominated it. These fighters are the elite of our sport. Now it’s up to you to decide who’s the best of the best.

Kamaru Usman - In 2021 Kamaru Usman went 3-0. Usman has won 3 fights in a year before, in 2018, however the difficulty of competition this time around was much, much higher. Kamaru knocked out Gilbert Burns, and Masvidal…then went on to win a 5 round war against Colby Covington. Quite the resume this year for the Welterweight King.

Dustin Poirier - 2 Dominant wins over Conor McGregor has made Poirier a much more well-known name this last year. Certainly many fans expected the long time UFC vet to get the wins, and he did, but the way in which he did it was certainly impressive. He did however lose a title fight to Charles Oliveira.

Charles Oliveira - When Khabib retired many people had questions about what the future would look like for the 155 Lb Lightweight division. Charles Oliveira answered those questions by defeating two major players in the division, Dustin Poirier, and Michael Chandler. Not only did he beat them, he finished them both within 3 rounds. Oliveira has proved time and time again that he’s not just on a short hot streak, he’s improved massively and is here to make a name for himself in the record books.

Julianna Peña - Raise your hand if you thought we’d be having this conversation 1 month ago. Julianna submitted Sarah McMann in January of 2021 cementing her title shot for December against Amanda Nunes. Amanda Nunes is arguably the GOAT fighter in WMMA, and was a -1100 favorite going into the fight. Not only did Julianna win, she submitted Nunes in shocking fashion sending shockwaves through the MMA community.

Charles solely for the fact that it wasn't rematches. He overcame adversity - Usman did against Burns, who was his teammate and friend - but the way Charles finished two guys who seemed tailor made to put him away early and dispelled many notions and assumptions about his toughness, durability and supposed mental fragility just sealed the award for me.

The icing on the cake though was how much he actually valued being champion and his genuine happiness and excitement after winning the belt. He's also a great guy it seems. War Charlie Olives.

The answer is obviously Usman, wtf are these results. 3 title defences in ONE YEAR is so rare nowadays, 2 brutal finishes, and 2 against tough matchups.

I can't imagine why I would choose Juliana pena over Valentina Shevchenko or even Rose. Either one deserves to be up here more than Pena.

Usman did well. But beating guys he beat prior demeans it a little.
Pena beat Nunes... but Nunes had Covid prior which IMO demeans her performance.
Dustin Beat COnor, but Conor is not the same pre-Floyd and he also lost to Charles...

Charles is the one IMO.
Beat top guys, kept an amazing win streak going and no repeats... He wins the next couple, and we will be talking about him being LW GOAT... something no one would have had imagined while Khabib was active.

Oliveira, and by quite a large margin IMO. Pena definitely should win upset of the year, but fighter of the year is a bit much. Poirier beating Conor the first time was a huge win, and the second fight was great for him too - but beating Conor is nothing compared to what the other fighters on this list did this year - plus, Dustin actually lost to one of those fighters, so really hard to rate him above Oliveira.

Usman is definitely number 2. He had 3 great showings, and he was super impressive vs both Burns and Masvidal and got fantastic finishes. The Colby fight was great too. However, Masvidal isn't really that impressive of a win overall, and he had already beat both Masvidal and Colby in previous fights.

Oliveira is the clear winner IMO. He's been on an amazing win streak, and he finished both Chandler and Poirier in the same year - and in both of these fights, he was the underdog! He went from being a good but never elite fighter, to being the best in the world at his weight class, and I think that's way more impressive than what anyone else did in 2021.

What’s Poirier doing on this list? Lol

It’s definitely Usman and there should be no discussion.

And how Gane’s not on the list? His year was sensational
