Elections 2020 Democratic Primary Thread: The Announcements

First, are Trotsky's selections and their order accurate - given that Beto has just announced and Biden will almost certainly be announcing (according to his own cryptic public statement) within the next couple weeks?

Second, are these the candidates you would personally like to see get the nomination or those you believe most likely to get the nomination?

My top three in no order were Brown, Warren, and Klobuchar. With Brown out, Trotsky has my top three correct. My preferences are considering the likelihood that Biden will run and that Beto is running. Again, I've commented on this many, many times. You are simply operating off a very inaccurate model of my thinking when you make your predictions.

Those are my personal preferences. I see Biden and Bernie as the current frontrunners to actually get the nomination, but at this point in the race, I'm not convinced that that means much.

No, Klobuchar is exactly the type of dem I see you supporting. It's just that given she has no shot in hell of getting the nom I would have assumed you wouldn't have wasted time factoring her in.

Other than age and gender, where do you see significant distinctions between what she and Biden bring to the table?

You just predicted that I'd be a fan of Beto and Biden, who I'm very much not. Then I pointed out that my actual top three are Warren, Klobuchar, and Bernie, and your response is that that's what you'd expect? Previously, you indicated that you thought I'd be a supporter of McAuliffe. Either you think there's no difference between Brown, Warren, Klobuchar, and Bernie on one hand and Biden, Beto, and McAuliffe on the other, or you have to admit that you had the wrong idea about my thinking.

Gender is not what I'd call a significant difference between candidates. I think Klobuchar is much smarter and more competent than Biden.

I only said I would have expected your support of Slightly-Less-Likable-Hillary (Klobuchar). Which you understood. But now want to try and muddy the waters over. I also clearly stated why I didn't attach you to Amy prior to seeing your list.

I think Klobuchar is much smarter and more competent than Biden.

Based on what possible metrics? And are you talking about relative to actual governance or relative to political campaigning??

Beto launches his campaign: And it's clear that white men still have unfair advantages

Beto, Bernie and Joe aren't being oppressed in 2020. In fact, they all benefit from white male privilege

Cartoonist Scott Benson released a video a few years back mocking "men's rights activists" for their feelings of persecution resulting from women being slightly less unequal than they used to be. The cartoon shows a man and a woman standing under a spigot dispensing ice cream, and every scoop lands in the man's cone, who gulps it down happily. But when the woman manages to sneak in and grab a single scoop, interrupting the man's ice cream monopoly, he wails as if he's being oppressed as no person has ever been oppressed before.

Muddy the waters? What? Do you understand my point? My actual top three are extremely different from your predicted favorites. That pretty clearly shows that you don't understand my thinking at all. No? How can you even dispute that?

And wow! I can't believe you dislike Klobuchar more than you dislike Clinton. I think that no healthy person hates *anyone* as much as you hate Clinton (and for the awful sin of agreeing with you about only 97% of issues and of actually working to make the world a better place--what a monster!).

What metrics do you need? I think she's much smarter and more-competent than Biden. And she's more popular among her constituents than Biden ever was relative to the partisan baseline.

And I don't believe that people can predict politics that well. As a voter, I care only about governance.

I'm tentatively offering an AV bet: Bernie Sanders will be the 2020 Democratic nominee for president. I'm taking 'yes'. Anyone want the other side?

Would you take a bet on Bernie becoming President? (I'm of the opposite where there's no way in fucking hell he'll be President in 2020)

No, I wouldn't take that bet. I do think Sanders is one of Trump's toughest possible matchups though.

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock: I’ve Ruled Out a Senate Run

Gov. Steve Bullock (D-MT) isn’t quite ready to announce he’s running for president, but he is ready to commit to something else: not running for Senate.

In an interview with the Montana Free Press, Bullock said he first wants to focus on finishing up work in the current legislative session before making a determination on a White House run. But on the topic of running for Senate, he was clear:

Specific Thread: Beto is running in 2020 (not confirmed)

Beto O'Rourke enters the 2020 race as the wildcard candidate

CNN
Beto O'Rourke entered the 2020 presidential race on Thursday, beginning his bid to recapture what made him a star during his Senate race last year while facing for the first time the larger Democratic electorate.

O'Rourke joins a crowded field of more than a dozen Democrats as a wildcard. As with his Senate bid, O'Rourke is building his presidential campaign around an aspirational, Barack Obama-esque call to move past partisan politics -- heavy on emotional appeal and fueled by the force of his own personality. But he has not clearly defined himself in terms of what he actually believes or where his ideology will fit among a group of candidates who range from progressive to more moderate.

Gillibrand formally joins crowded field of Democratic presidential candidates
New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand made official what already was well-known on Sunday by formally joining the crowded Democratic field of candidates for president in 2020.

Gillibrand, 52, made the announcement on Twitter and released a two-and-a-half- minute campaign video entitled "The Brave" in which she discusses The Star-Spangled Banner and urges Americans to "be brave" and support her and her policies.

Gillibrand talks about universal health care, family leave, an end to gun violence, the Green New Deal and campaign finance changes.

"I’m running for president," she tweeted. "Let’s prove that brave wins."

I bet your heart leapt when Beto announced... Now if Biden just gets in you may end up with that Biden/Beto 2020 dream ticket!
Mine certainly did. I can’t help it. I grew up with a picture of JFK in the kitchen. Something that feels so right can’t be wrong.

WOOD vote for.

Beto seems like a decent guy to have a beer and talk music with. It kills me though that the media creams themselves over how "normal" he is. For example, today he was in Detroit this morning and Cleveland this afternoon, and you know what? He made the 3ish hour drive between stops in a minivan! That Beto..a real salt of the earth kinda guy.
