The media has created this idea the Dodgers aren't spending money cause they aren't making huge, and mostly stupid, signings. The media wants headlines not a team built from the farm system

I don't think it's that black and white, spend more or don't.

MLBNetwork mostly got on them for how they spent their money. The Pirates get mid tier pitchers like Lirano or AJ Burnett and hope to get the most out of them, because that's what they can afford.

The old Yankees just bought the best pitcher on the market no matter the price. Not saying this is the right strategy and it is burning them now, but that's what people expected from the Dodgers because that's how high their payroll was. Instead Greinke signed with another team (blessing now) and they have stock piled these mid market arms like Kazmir, Brett Anderson, McCarthy.
