To me, he is so far right on most issues that it will be impossible for him to unite America in a time when it is so divided.

Also, I would never elect a President who says "I am a Christian first, American second". (Source)

I also believe that both Cruz and Trump would actually destroy America's power instead of restoring or augmenting it. The rest of the world would find it impossible to cooperate with a President who knows no compromise, no shades of grey. Actually I believe the rest of the world would find ways to cooperate without the United States, thereby diminishing American influence.
He's too far right he believes in the constitution...a huge difference from the current occupier, who has, since you mentioned it, divided this nation like nothing I've ever seen and I've been around longer than most.
God, family, country is a popular statement among everyone, but atheist (the minority)
Merkel just took over second spot as worlds most powerful leaders....and she' horrible. We have dropped from first to third since obama was elected, thats losing power.

Dont count Trump out yet...not even close. He wasn't really supposed to win there anyway...i know some polls had him up but the experts all agreed Cruzs ground game was too strong to overcome. Plus its iowa..they get off on being different and rarely pick a winner.
Trump will win NH and then its anyones game. I will say Rubio is looking strong..should be interesting which 2 will be left standing but i think rubio will be one of them.

IMO the one who divided the country was Dubya. The fact that Obama was elected only furthered the rift.

Yeah it's just me, but I would never elect a politician (let alone President) who says that the country is not his first priority. No chance.

Also imagine a Jew or Muslim had said that.

You dropped to third? Huh? Are you seriously listening to some magazine's rankings? Likely coughed up by some "MSM" journalist?

The United States is still the most powerful nation in the world by a wide, wide, wide margin. China is still caught up in internal issues for the foreseeable time, they will not step up. Russia is aggressive, but its political reach is limited.

I think the results from last nite show the heartland of America does not support a yellow, ducking coward. Duck was in a bad position. Go to the debate and get his ass handed too him or not go and lose Iowa. I guess Duck can't use look at the polls as one of his answers. Let's make ducking great.

It's Iowa. They tend to go full Jesus and nobody goes full Jesus better than Cruz. Although, Rubio in the last few weeks was going hard on that savior talk.

Now if Trump bombs out in N.H. and S.C., then he should be worried.

Damn, going to be exciting though see the last 3 sect is being counted on dems.
war bernie

Looking at the polls before and the results, I wonder if people who supported Trump when asked in private went to someone else if when standing in front of their friends.

Two more possibilities:

1) The people they asked were neckbeards who did not leave their basements for any caucus
2) Iowa is just an insane state with lots of crazy farmers and the low numbers polled were simply not enough for decent extrapolation

@Jack V Savage, I think you were the one I saw talking about how Rubio worries you too. This guy is going to be very appealing in the coming weeks. What do you think of his close 3rd finish?

Yeah, that was good for him (hence his "victory" speech). He's going to be the biggest fundraiser from here on out, as he's the clear hope for the Chamber of Commerce wing of the party. He also has some appeal with the religious nuts and bigots, too, so he's looking really good. I don't know that anyone is better than even against everyone else collectively yet, but Rubio is the single most likely winner.

Why do people think Rubio is some unstoppable winning machine? Clinton would beat him.

Clinton would probably beat him, but he's the only candidate with a good shot against her.

CNN: "Iowa caucuses: Ted Cruz wins; Clinton declares victory"

This is how they do it. Every time with this shit. While not technically incorrect, someone simply glancing at the headline without reading the content would assume that Clinton won. But that's wrong, it was a tie, the Clinton campaign had no business claiming victory of course.

I think Rubio is the second best Republican candidate after Kasich and the one most likely to win the General Election. I do not like his position on Cuba and Iran. I do like his stance on abortion, the fact that he is pragmatic about immigration, and I think his stance on climate change is not as bad as that of other candidates (he says it's not man-made but it's real - this at least opens the avenue to get ready for what is coming). His stance on same-sex marriage is respectable - he believes marriage to be between a man and a woman, but says the ruling must be respected and followed.

If I were a moderate leaning Republican, I would want to make sure Rubio is my candidate.

You can hardly compare the issues and situations both countries are facing.
Its incredible that a German outsider like you understands the only hope for republicans and the exact reasons why, but half the republicans themselves have their heads so far up their asses, they cant see this simple basic stuff.

I am curious of the people voting for Clinton, Sanders who they despise more? Rubio or Cruz.

agreed with this.

To me, Rubio is just a slightly toned down, less punchable version of Cruz...i'm surprised he's not leading at this point but I think he'll pass Cruz eventually. They're both trash but Cruz scares me more than any other candidate. All he wants is to start holy wars, reverse any laws helping gay people and women, and to take healthcare away from poor people.

Cruz by quite a bit...not a Rubio fan either but he doesn't necessarily strike me as a flat out bad person like Cruz does.

LOL dude do you honestly think America is anything other than the most powerful country in the world? They are that and will always be that for as long as they have the best military in the world because their dominance can't be challenged and they can never be invaded. And don't give me some bullshit about decrease in ground troops. That's not how wars are fought anymore.

Rubio was the single biggest winner last night. This should propel him to get the nomination assuming kasich and jeb and christie fall in line. That sets up a rubio/kasich ticket which will win florida and ohio and get the presidential election, regardless of hilary or sanders. The narrative on the left writes itself for the general uneducated public (clinton is a liar, dirty cheat. sanders is a socialist).

Cruz is probably the most despicable guy in politics (and I think Republicans who know him personally would agree).

agreed with this.

Rubio wants to do all that, too, and he's more personally likable so he has a better chance of accomplishing it.

I thought Cruz was gonna win.
Hes the type of Politician who always does well in Iowa.

I do think however, that Trump is overrepresented in the Polls.I actually expect Rubio to win NH

This is why Rubio is dangerous. He doesn't come across as a bad person or crazy. I find myself wanting to root for him even. But the only major issue where he is not a disaster is immigration. His New American Century garbage is a callback to our aggression in old Soviet states and further destabilization of the middle east. This fool believes Bush Jr didn't do enough.

True - I have been very much against Rubio too up until Cruz gained so much unexpected steam and lately I have been looking at Rubio as the lesser of 2 (or 3) evils but in reality he's just as bad, or worse because he doesn't have the dislikeability or "joke" status of Trump or Cruz so he has a shot in the general...ugh. This is going to be an interesting year.
