driver thought he was playing GTA

They are mentioning his prior drug arrests (for marijuana), but plowing through the intersection, pedestrians and into a parked car without braking, you'd suspect he might have had a medical issue.

News reports state that the limos were in bad shape. And that the driver - who also died - complained about the poor condition of the limos. The limo was a 2001 Ford excursion. That is a pretty old limo, and the only reason to use that old a limo for that model and year is because the owner is a greedy asshole or he couldn't afford better. Owner should be held criminally liable, just like when a drink driver kills people. He deserves to be in jail for decades.

The only thing more dangerous than late 90s/early 2000s roll over death trap SUVs would be late 90s/early 2000s SUVs that are 3x the original length.

From the look of the crash pictures, it looks like it continued after hitting the pedestrians and vehicle until it hit an embankment. No sign of braking either apparently.

Damn.....going through a parked SUV and then into an tree and embankment? Thanks for linking that video as it looks like lots of things are still changing as new information becomes available. No braking is a strange one...mechanical failure or driver error (ie asleep, etc)? Crazy stuff and 20 people dead...just unreal.

I thought it was the owner's father who was the FBI informant.
It's not completely clear to me, but from reading the article it sounds like the owner, "Malik", was the FBI informant. :

"The limousine company is based at the Crest Inn Suites & Cottages in Gansevoort, N.Y., a small town north of Albany, and on Monday, state troopers were at the hotel. The State Police said they had seized three vehicles from the company and believed that Mr. Hussain was outside the United States.

Arnie Cornett, the manager at the hotel, identified the owner as “Malik” and said he lived in Dubai. Mr. Hussain, the informant, went by Malik when he helped the F.B.I. infiltrate a mosque in Albany.

Mr. Hussain, the man whose name seems to be associated with the limousine company, posed as a wealthy Muslim radical and was the central prosecution witness in a 2004 federal sting focusing on a pizzeria owner and an imam at an Albany mosque. Six years later, Mr. Hussain, who posed as a terrorist, played a key role in the government’s case in a plot to blow up two synagogues in the Bronx.

He became an F.B.I. informant after being charged in 2002 with a scheme that involved taking money to illegally help people in the Albany area get driver’s licenses."

first of all you're taking these corners too cotdamn fast, almost made me spill my yak on my $300 suit

That is sad.
I am just wondering how 18 people inside the Limo died?
I don't think it burned out. That must have been one hell of a crash at very high speeds.

I think the seating situation pry had a lot to do with it. The human body is very bad at dealing with impacts that cause side to side movement instead of front to back. It often leads to aortal trauma and dissection. Seating in limos often places people facing side to side.

Apparently the vehicle had failed several previous safety inspections, including for brakes. Someone is about to get sued into oblivion.

Yeah, that makes sense thanks.

The whole limo probably had a lot to do with it. Lots of them are basically bodged together. No kind of airbags or crumple zones. No kind of upgrades to the brakes or tires.

Can't imagine cleaning up that mess. What a nightmare, fuckin A

If they weared seat belts they would all be alive today.

No doubt, they are death traps.

they were on their way to a birthday party? if the person celebrating the birthday was not in the limo, can you imagine the guilt that person feels? obviously it is not their fault, but damn if that were me, my birthday would be something i would dread every year, with those memories coming back. too sad.

reading about the sisters reminds me of a neighbor of mine years ago. a man lost his wife, parents, child and dog in an accident because of a drunk driver. the grief from one death is overwhelming. i couldnt imagine losing everyone at once
