Marines would go in the cage with it for a chance to win a shit load of money if they could last 5 minutes with it. Fact is striking works because you are hitting another human (at presumably their softer parts). Thinking your fist or foot will make an impression on a gorilla is silly, you are striking a larger, denser and more armoured (thick layer of fur) target, good luck. Strike it's head and it rips your limb off with its jaws, it's body and you will break your hand or foot on its hide with a strike it will barely feel.

there has to be some incentive for them to not only fight but also be willing to take casualties. if that is the case, they just cant lose

The strong men all act like Machida running up to the gorilla and back to tire him out. When hes visibly gassed, one guy jumps on his back which causes the gorilla to go apezhit and gas out more. Eventually they all grab his legs push him up against the fence and toss him out of the cage.

A gorilla is 300 pounds, but all the strongmen who lift much more on a regular basis acting in a concerted effort could lift him up and push him out of the cage.

Give them bats or sticks and the gorilla has almost no chance.

It's the strongmen that will gas trying to avoid the gorilla. The cage will be littered with torn body parts of the strongmen.

I think gorilla's skin is tough no? So much muscle and bone, I would think you could hit one with a bat and barely get its attention.

I would agree with this but caveat with the 12 strong men could win if trained to old school military precision with a willingness to die to make sure they win.

They need to act in concert and with a plan and try and overwhelm the gorilla at the onset. Giving the gorilla any space lets him swat one or many of them with each swing. they need to rush him with 4 groups 3 having one goal, grab and secure a limb and weigh it down and control it and try and draw and quarter him. not pull him apart but to pull each limb outward so the gorilla loses all leverage in his strength. our limbs are the weakest when fully extended at a static stop.

Even then I give them only a 50/50 chance because if one group fails the gorilla will use that other free arm or leg to reek havoc on the others just trying to hold on.

They wouldn't be able to pin the gorilla down and hold it there, or hurt it with punches or kicks. So, unarmed I would take the gorilla. It would probably run away at the perceived threat of being outnumbered though. You would have to put it's baby in front or something to rile it up.
