When exactly did UFC jump the shark

lol... the UFC waz founded on it. The whole thing was set up as a circus. An experiment to put different styles together. Fooking Sumo in a real fist fight? Everyone knew what would happen. Also, everyone knew Boxing would lose to a grappler unless the boxer landed that one hail marry, but again... it had to be done. The whole fooking thing waz jumping the shark.

They did do it in an interesting way & had some interesting characters though & even though they were jumping the shark, those MF'z pulled it off. It didn't take long before they were back to legitimacy. Even Tank with all his antics was a seasoned wrestler & puncher with big power.

Any time they jump the shark though... they alwayz have a higher level of legitimacy behind it all. So you can't say that Bringing Punk in (for example) with no previous fights takes away from everything else, because everything else is legit the best fighters on the planet.

So for the most part the UFC started out jumping the shark... & they had "small moments" where they jumped a little sharkness... but for the most part they've never "fully" gone there & so it's an illusion that it ever happened outside of the first few UFC's. Even then, they had some legit fighters, so even that's questionable. Once that stuff got cleared, we started getting the best vs. the best. (with a few minor acceptionz) so there is no shark jumping.

They do cash grabs for sure, but even the cash grabs are legit for the most part... with a minor acception here & there.

McGregor beating Aldo and Rousey beating Zigano...ushered in the shit-show era of the UFC.

Chael emerging with his schtick in 2010 was a pre-cursor to this bullshit WWE-esque era though.

At least the Shamrock and Tito feud featured legitimate animosity. When guys like Penn, Diaz, Rampage, Rashad, Serra, etc talked trash at least it sounded like something that would come from a grown man's mouth- not a WWE wrestler.

Most of those were the champ of a higher division moving down. If Randy can be HW champ, then he probably is an elite LHW too.

Conor didn't have to run the gauntlet of excellent fighters at 155. He is an opportunist, in it for the money like his cumdumpster yes man Dana.

The dude is a great fighter but doesn't fight when he has something to lose. Who would rather be stripped of two titles instead of defending?

So be it. No respect.
You failed to strongly differentiate between those fighters and McGregor's situation. So moving down makes it OK to get a title shot with no wins in a division, but moving up means the UFC jumped the shark? That's nonsense.

Anyone taking issue with McGregor getting a title shot at LW with 0 wins (which is a sensible thing to criticize imo) has to also take issue with other very similar situations that have occurred previously at least three times and occurred afterwards at MW as well. There was plenty of precedent for the UFC giving McGregor a title shot at LW. Given that it was neither the first time nor the last time such a thing has happened, the only reason to single out McGregor is if you have a grudge against that fighter.

Slow process, when Forest fought Bonner really started the spectacle, The UFC considers that fight the beginning, I think it was the beginning of the end....Cunner finished it off, now it’s just a freak show catering to dummies and kids...much like pro wrestling..

So they started jumping cuddle-fish and worked their way up to sharks

For.the record I was against Edgar getting the shot. I was ok with Penn/Hughes as it wasn't a blatant cash grab.

It's sad you can't see the preferential treatment the UFC is giving McG.

Enjoy WME TMZMMA. Igor is ashamed of you.

When the UFC first signed a major deal with Fox.

Doesn't fight when he has something to lose? If he had lost to Aldo, he would have went home without the Featherweight Title. Losing to Alvarez would have meant going home without the Lightweight one. So would losing to Khabib.

Just because he's challenging for a belt instead of defending it doesn't mean he has nothing to lose. If he loses, he's taking a L and going home without the championship around his waist either way.

Brock was a NCAA D1 Champ and looks like a vanilla Hulk I think he was qualified to be there the proof is he won the tittle and unified it and defended it. @Clippy

Zuffa selling imo. Been pretty shit ever since.

Right about the time the Fertita’s got bored of the escort service known as ring girls and sold the ufc for 4 bills. Lucky Bastards

I think it was when Brock Lesnar had his first fight against Mir

What say you

I'm not going to rewatch it or Google a recap, but I thought Lesnar was doing alright until he got caught in a submission. He didn't have much pro experience, but was a D1 All American/champion wrestler. And he did crush Mir in the rematch, and go on to win the title.

Jumping the shark might be more applicable to CM Punk.

1. You don't speak for Igor.
2. Of course McGregor is getting preferential treatment. When did I suggest otherwise. It's simply that he isn't the only one to receive such preferential treatment. It's the way it works in MMA, because it revolves around individuals rather than teams.
3. So you were against Frankie getting the shot, but that wasn't when the UFC jumped the shark in your eyes. To you, they jumped the shark three years later when the UFC did something almost exactly the same thing, but now it involved McGregor, who you can't stand. But it was OK when they did with Penn/Hughes, because they didn't make much money on it?
4. Not making fighting about TMZ style drama is exactly why I continue to like the UFC. It's everyone who is fussing and stamping their feet who are buying into melodrama. I couldn't care less about McGregor throwing a dolly or Khabib yelling at Artem or any of that. But Khabib vs McGregor is a very intriguing match up. At the end of the day, it's a great fight. And that's what matters to me.

Pretty much this.
It started with groin strikes declared illegal. Than USADA. The final straw was the discharge of Mario Yamasaki.

I don't know this fucking guy, but he knows what's up.

Dana cutting Fitch. And not going after people like Askren because they are "boring."

WMMA.
