Great, declare victory in Syria over ISIS and the bring the troops home and have a parade.

I get the point but let's not compare victory in World War II with victory in a conflict with a single, minor belligerent. I don't think it's fair to take away not only the sacrifice in life that soldiers made, but the sacrifice all civilians made as well.

To paraphrase the words of contemporary soldiers, "America isn't at war. The troops are at war. America is at the mall." The conflicts aren't even remotely similar.

Theres also the actual issue of declaring victory, when the terrorist organisation that calls themselves ISIS is still very much alive and committed multiple terrorist attacks in the united states last year.

It would be some sad irony if they committed one at the victory parade celebrating their defeat.

It's eerily reminiscent of pre-democratic feudalistic autocracies, where huge expenditures of would-be-public money were spent for the grandiose whims of the Kings and royalty, detached from any input from the commoners.

I mean, it makes more sense for countries like North Korea or Israel, whose sovereignty feels constantly threatened such that military demonstrations are important to national consciousness.
