For instance, Leonardo Castelo Branco was BJJ Next Gen at that time, highly regarded...
Edson Carvalho [BJJ/Judo], the infamous Death Master, was hespected in the Brazilian scene...
Nick Nutter had a short career, Hammer House dude...
Mikhail Ilyukhin, sambo champ, pioneer @ RTT, b4 Fedor...Experienced vet, tricky like hell...
Many sambo dudes in all these tournaments, but they didnt have many opportunities to shine due to them being Eastern European and the limitations of the NHB/ValeTudo market back then...
Personally, I like to study those forgotten fighters...
On a sidenote, Igor also fought in Pride: Valentijn Overeem [powerful striker who developped a legit ground game, in particular a sound leglocks arsenal] , Carlos Barreto [BJJ giant from Carlson´s...had the physical tool to develop a lethal striking but was always a lil bit too hesitant...], Yvel [good striking indeed... he even developped a decent ground game later on, pulling some nice armbars...]
Big Daddy actually had a boxing [amateur] background, decent striker but his fight IQ was not that great...
Wand vs Igor would probably be a 50/50 fight at any point in their careers. Especially when it was discussed at the end of PRIDE when both were already past their primes.
Igor definitely faced some good strikers like: Gilbert Yvel, Masaaki Satake, Gary Goodridge 2x.
He also fought but lost to Cro Cop, Herring, Rampage and Overeem but no shame in losing to those guys, especially toward the end of his career. Only CC beat him on the feet. The rest beat him with grappling.
Igor was only KO'ed standing up once in 70 fights and that was to CC. He was a very skilled striker with power and timing to knock anybody out. Good grapplers were his only weakness.
What’s puberty like? You present it like it's a video you made yourself recently, and not one of the first quality highlights MMA video that was published before you hit puberty.
Ilyukhin, sure he had those infamous chin-to-the-eye moves, but he literally schooled/"fooled" Randy:You have great following of BJJ history, that's cool!
Ilyukhin of course, he beat Randy as well. Igor lost to him though.
So yeah, Igor beat good grapplers indeed - I just have a feeling these grapplers adapted to MMA less than they used to.
Take for example Mario Sperry - the guy who beat Igor as well. IIRC, he was the first one that made BJJMMA seminars - explaining how you use punches on the ground to work on submission. "And then you punch punch punch...soften him up...."
Re: Gary - I know that he was an amateur boxer. Maybe that was bad fight IQ, maybe bad defense (or definitely?) maybe not that sharp of a technique - I just don't see him as a great striker.
or say how Conor would fuck him up and be dead serious. Or how Fedor was exposed after 10 years undefeated and over 30 fights. Now that I think of it, most of them are just retarded dickheaded little trolls on here. Most of modern day Sherdog are just turning 18 so they wouldn't know who Igor was.
They'll chime in and throw a Conor gif somewhere here just watch "Who da Fook is day guy" bullshit.
i remember someone saying that alistair overeem single-handedly ruined the MW GP. he choked out vitor, which meant no vitor vs wanderlei rematch, then went on and choked out igor, which meant no igor vs wanderlei.I'm still sad we didn't get Igor vs Wand in PRIDE.
LUL YOU GOT OWNEDYou present it like it's a video you made yourself recently, and not one of the first quality highlights MMA video that was published before you hit puberty.
Coke is the kingI used to do crack....
And i still do
Coke is the king
Igor would k0 most of the ufc hw division today
He was good for his time, but modern day HWs would crush him easily. The skill gap made up for the size during his time.
Today's HWs, as awful as they are, are better than the part time bouncers or truck drivers he was can crushing.
