Because in your culture it's customary to shake hands....so now you're dismissing their culture for your own. Why purchase from you when they can purchase from someone who isn't dismissing your culture while at the same time asking you to spend your hard earned money on them.

How far does the argument of "dismissing my culture" go?
What if we're talking about the Maori (and i think Jordanians do it as well) practice of greeting by touching noses? How about the French or Swiss cheek kissing?
Classifying a refusal to handshake for religious reasons isn't a 'dismissal" of culture. At least not a big enough thing to throw a hissy fit about.

I don't know exactly how she handled this when it happened, but it doesn't appear like she had any ill intent.

This company is looking for an interpreter. This woman they are interviewing is a representative of the people whom they are trying to communicate with. If it is their culture to not shake hands, then perhaps they should be learning from this ? Do they plan on forcing all Muslim women they meet to shake their hand?
It's not difficult to follow someone else's lead when figuring out how to interact. I live abroad. I hug my European and American female friends, i give fist bumps, high fives, and smiles to most of my Asian female friends. It's not a difficult thing to figure out.

But i think she was wrong for suing them. That just comes off as cunty to me.

I think this gets to the crux of the problem in much of Europe, and to a less developed degree in the US. The problem isn't immigrants. Sure, immigrants cause problems and always have, but with the proper incentives, they usually assimilate within a generation or so. The problem is that a large group of people within the host nation disdain their own culture. They want it destroyed or hobbled: it's history, identity, traditions, borders etc. If the Swedes all loved Sweden and Swedishness and were proud of it, their culture would be more than strong enough to force immigrants to try harder to fit in.

But the immigration of large groups of third world people is coinciding with a cultural crisis internal to the host states. It's a bad situation.

To be completely honest, the Swedes never really had a great culture. That may be part of why they're so culturally weak. They never had great cuisine or architecture. They were organized and efficient, but that's about it. Other people, like the French, actually believe in their culture and are fighting back more. The mistake the French made is that they thought they could turn Muslims into French, just like they did with European immigrants. But they still believe in their culture. They have great food and art and architecture and a way of life. They have an identity, unlike the Swedes.

The difference is that the vast majority of Jews in Europe are secular or at least moderate, even regular orthodox Jews. The ultra-orthodox are a small minority within a minority. Muslims are a demographically larger group and are much more traditional and religious as a whole. Jews are culturally compatible within Europe but Muslims are not.

Wow, this thread is full of idiocy. First off, all the US posters laughing about Sweden should understand that the Muslim woman would win the same case in the US. We have strong religious freedom protection in the US, and trying to pretend that a handshake is anything more than an informal custom is laughable, and would lead to an easy case for her lawyer to make the argument that they were discriminating against her based on her religion.

Second, in the US at least, it's much less common for woman to shake hands (note: I'm not saying it never happens, I know it does, but it's undeniably less common).

Thirdly, most Western countries have protections that prevent people from forcing others to participate in their customs, I'm sure Sweden is no different. Ya'll are bitching and moaning about this situation, but I doubt anyone would want to be forced to do the old spit or blood swap handshake that was common pre-19th century.

It is 'boring' in a general sense and much of the lifestyle has been shaped by the isolation and landscape itself although it's probably even more pronounced in Norway as far as national psyche and population sprawl. Still, more people live alone in Sweden than virtually any other country in the world - ensam är stark and all that.
