Marvel's Shortlist for Peter Parker/SPIDER-MAN Revealed

Nat-Wolff-Asa-Butterfield-Tom-Holland-Liam-James-Timothee-Chalamet-Dragonlord.jpg

Sony Pictures and Marvel have narrowed down their list of Spider-Man contenders to a select group of up-and-coming actors that includes Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield, Tom Holland, Liam James and Timothee Chalamet, among others, TheWrap has learned.

Sony is preparing to make test offers to several young stars next week, with a decision expected in the next 2-3 weeks, though a deal may take longer to hammer out. To be clear, none of the five actors above have test offers, but multiple individuals with knowledge of the situation have confirmed they are strong contenders who are definitely in the mix as of right now, and the group paints a picture of the kind of actor the studios want.

While the new Spider-Man is expected to have a cameo in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, which starts filming very soon, the role won't need to be filled until June, when the character will be needed on set. Drew Goddard remains the frontrunner to direct the new Spider-Man movie, which is expected to be set in high school.

All of the five actors above can pass for high school students, including Wolff, who at 20 years old, is the oldest of the quintet. Wolff is riding high off The Fault In Our Stars, and stars opposite Cara Delevingne in the next John Green adaptation, Paper Towns.

Chalamet and James have had similar career trajectories. Both starred on hit TV shows - Chalamet on Homeland and James on The Killng - and have made a successful jump to features. Chalamet played Matthew McConaughey's son in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, while James carried the hit indie The Way Way Back on his young shoulders.

Likewise, Holland was arguably the lead of the acclaimed drama The Impossible, which launched his career. He also co-stars in Ron Howard's whale tale In the Heart of the Sea. Butterfield may be the best known among the five actors, having played the lead in Ender's Game and Martin Scorsese's Hugo. The new standalone Spider-Man movie is slated to swing into theaters on July 28, 2017.

Marvel's Spider-Man Shortlist Includes Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield and More (Exclusive)

Comments: Here's the height and age for each actor (from left to right): Nat Wolff (20) - 6'1", Asa Butterfield (18) - 5'10", Tom Holland (18) - 5'6", Liam James (18) - 5'7", Timothee Chalamet (18) - 6'1". I prefer a not-so-short actor for Spidey, so either Wolff, Butterfield and Chalamet would be my choice among the five.

Kevin Feige Confirms SPIDER-MAN Reboot Not an Origin Story

Kevin-Feige-Spider-Man-041115b-Dragonlord.jpg

Kevin Feige: "In Spider-Man's very specific case, where there have been two retellings of that origin in the last whatever it's been - [thirteen] years - for us we are going to take it for granted that people know that, and the specifics," Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios, told CraveOnline in a one-on-one interview at today's junket for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

"It will not be an origin story," Feige continued. "But, with great power comes great responsibility. It is inherent to who his character is. But we want to reveal it in different ways and spend much more time focusing on this young high school kid in the MCU dealing with his powers. There is a young kid [already] running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU, you just don't know it yet. [laughs]"

"I was more involved in the Raimi ones, and think they did a very good job," Feige said about the previous costumes. "But that being said, we've already designed the costume, which is different than any of the ones that have come before. And yet ours is classic Spidey, as I think you'll see."

Kevin Feige Confirms Peter Parker Is SPIDER-MAN in Reboot

Kevin-Feige-Spider-Man-041115-Dragonlord.jpg

Casting is currently underway to find the new Spider-Man. Rumors swirled that Marvel could be going a different route and using someone like Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker. Collider recently spoke with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige at the press day for Avengers: Age of Ultron, and he not only set the record straight on who their Spider-Man is, but confirmed his age:

"In terms of the age of an actor we'll eventually to cast, I don't know. In terms of the age of what we believe Peter Parker is, I'd say 15-16 is right."

"We want to play with Spider-Man in the high school years because frankly there've been five Spider-Man films and the amazing thing about it is, even though there've been five Spider-Man films, there are so many things from the comics that haven't been done yet. Not just characters or villains or supporting characters, but sides to his character. The most obvious being the 'young, doesn't quite fit in' kid before his powers, and then the fella that puts on a mask and swings around and fights bad guys and doesn't shut up, which is something we want to play with and we're excited about."

"Some of my favorite Spider-Man arcs and Spider-Man stories, he's in high school for a lot of it. We want to explore that. That also makes him very, very different from any of our other characters in the MCU, which is something else we want to explore: how unique he is when now put against all these other characters."

Potential Bad Spidey News: Tom Rothman Promoted at Sony

Tom-Rothman-Sony-Pictures-Dragonlord.jpg

Tom Rothman has been named the head of Sony Motion Pictures Group, stepping over inhouse candidates Doug Belgrad and Steve Mosko. This comes as Amy Pascal steps down/was fired after the events of the hack, and just a week after Marvel announced they were working with Sony to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Rothman used to run Fox during one of the great studio's low periods. He was cheap, so the movies often made money, but Fox was turning out absolute shit during his tenure. What's more, Rothman hates superhero movies, and he personally blocked a Deadpool film and refused to allow Sentinels to be used in an X-Men film. Like, he said in a meeting 'no giant robots.'

Rothman ran Fox back when the likes of Daredevil, Elektra and the previous Fantastic Four movies were released. He fast-tracked X-Men: The Last Stand, forcing Bryan Singer to abandon the project, and then placed Brett Ratner at the helm. Word is he also micromanaged X-Men: Origins: Wolverine into such a mess that the film wasn't even recognizable to its director, Gavin Hood.

He is allegedly one of the main reasons there is such bad blood between Fox and Marvel Studios these days.

Drew Goddard to Write and Direct SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN?

Drew-Goddard-Spider-Man-030215-Dragonlord.jpg

Latino Review has dropped a massive scoop on the new Spider-Man movies, which is envisioned as a three part series to come out over consecutive summers. There is talk about calling the series "Spectacular Spider-Man." Marvel's Kevin Feige was allowed to join the process only after Ike Perlmutter, Feige's boss and the man behind the curtain, insisted that former partner and one time friend Avi Arad be removed from the film series.

So the thinking at the moment is that Sony will faze out all the Spidey Verse films they were developing. Yes even the Aunt May film (that was real!) and focus on a story involving Spidey versus the Sinister Six. At one point they were developing a film that was just going to be a spinoff called The Sinister Six. That's scrapped but the big news is that the director of that film, Drew Goddard, will write and direct the Spectacular Spider Man movie. Key things to look for in the new series:

- No new origin story, Spidey exists from the beginning, taken as a given.

- New actor, probably an unknown, he will be specifically based in High School and they want him to be able to grow up into the role. The thought being if this works, Spidey can do multiple trilogies for years ala Harry Potter.

- A major part of the first film will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the "audition" to join the Avengers.

- The first film will involved the Sinister Six coming together with the thought to later maybe spin them off.

There are talks on Reddit about Dylan O'Brien but of the guy is 23 and already in a series, the site doubts he's the guy- and in fact casting will not begin for a number of months yet while Sony and Marvel cross the t's.

Goddard wrote and made his directorial debut with the 2012 horror film The Cabin in the Woods, and writes and executive produces Netflix's Daredevil. He also was one of the saviors of World War Z after that movie ran into third-act trouble, and he wrote the screenplay for Ridley Scott's upcoming film The Martian. His other credits include Lost, Cloverfield, Alias, Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Dragonlord Exclusive: 'First Footage' of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Spider-Man-Captain-America-022315-Dragonlord.jpg

Dragonlord Exclusive: I have just obtain the very first footage from the Marvel Studios' highly-anticipated Captain America: Civil War. I've also uncovered major details on the plot and the characters involved in this epic showdown. There have been reports in the past that Marvel was rebooting Spider-Man and Peter Parker was going back to high school. Recently, there were rumors that it would be Miles Morales that would take up the mantle of the Web-Slinger.

I'm here to report that they are all wrong! Marvel went with another direction. In the new reboot, Spider-Man is now a super-villain! Yes, you heard me right. Spidey is now a bad guy. This new Spider-Man is the most ruthless and vicious villain in Marvel Studios' history. The very first scene he appears in, Spidey orders the death of a woman by slicing her face off with a boat propeller!

Take a look at the footage below and I'll give you a breakdown on some of the important details. At the 1:20 mark, you can see how they introduced Spidey's camouflage suit from the Civil War comics. At 2:49, Tony Stark makes his first appearance and in what appears to be a homage to the classic "Demon in a Bottle" comic book storyline. Brilliant how Marvel seamlessly incorporates all these plot elements into one film.

During the 3:54 mark, Doctor Doom shows up and displays his formidable powers. At 4:24, Spidey kills a woman taking a bath. What a bastard. This wouldn't be a Civil War if there weren't other superheroes involved and at 4:59 Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil shows up! Nerdgasm. At 5:39, Marvel unexpectedly rips off the "rushing or dragging" scene straight from Whiplash. You're better than this, Marvel. At 5:50, Spidey devices an elaborate death trap to one of his enemies.

In a surprising plot twist, Doctor Doom is actually on the side of the good guys as evident at the 7:25 mark. At 7:46, Spidey kills two people in a shower. Cameo appearance by Kurt Russell at 8:11 mark. Around the 8:40 mark, Spidey makes love to the redheaded Mary Jane Watson, who is also a villain.

Marvel boldly reveals the "Spider Clone Saga" storyline in the movie during the 9:43 mark. Spoiler alert, Mary Jane dies at the 11:50 mark. During the post-credits scene, we are treated to the iconic Spider-Man unmasked scene. So there you have it. I don't know about you but this looks to be another Marvel hit, probably going to gross $800 million domestically. No wonder the Batman v Superman movie moved its release date to avoid Captain America: Civil War.

Rumor: Marvel's New SPIDER-MAN Might Not Be Peter Parker

Marvel-Miles-Morales-Spider-Man-022015-Dragonlord.jpg

Jeff Sneider from The Wrap just dropped a potential bomb regarding the next Spider-Man on the Meet the Movie Press podcast, which he co-hosts with Mark Reilly from Schmoes Know. "This is not set in stone guys, but I'm telling you right now: Spider-Man is not going to be white," Sneider revealed. When Reilly asked him if that was speculation, Jeff replied, "I am 95% sure."

If Spider-Man isn't going to be white than what will he be? "Spider-Man is going to be most likely black," Jeff stated. "But there is a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure not white."

Reilly then suggests, based on Jeff's information, that Marvel/Sony should go with Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker. "I don't think it's going to be Peter Parker," Sneider added. "I really feel strongly - Sony has an opportunity to beat Marvel and DC to the punch with sort of a major black comic book movie character. Like I mentioned last week, the e-mails that leaked were perceived to be racist in some quarters. I really think that is going to play into things."

SPIDER-MAN Headed Back to High School; Actors Being Eyed

Logan-Lerman-Dylan-OBrien-Spider-Man-Dragonlord.jpg

Sony is going younger with its next Spider-Man. Now that Andrew Garfield is hanging up the red and blue spandex, Sony Pictures is getting ready to put out a casting call to find its next web slinger. The plan is for the character to go back to high school in the next films, Variety has learned from sources with knowledge of the studio's plans.

A number of actors already have been mentioned as being considered for the role, including The Maze Runner and Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien and the Percy Jackson franchise's Logan Lerman. Lerman most recently co-starred in Sony's Fury.

Actors have yet to be approached, and sources say Sony is looking to hire a new director to replace The Amazing Spider-Man films' Marc Webb before tapping a new Spidey. The studio also needs to figure out whether it wants to go with another Peter Parker or introduce another character that suits up as Spider-Man, including Miles Morales, whose father is African American and mother is Puerto Rican.

Sony has put the character, played by Tobey Maguire and Garfield, in Midtown High School before, but the plan is to spend more time in the setting and explore his awkward relationship with other students while fighting crime out of the classroom. Midtown is a major setting in the comicbooks, and Peter Parker also returns to the school to become a science teacher in storylines.

Sony Still Moving Forward with SINISTER SIX and VENOM

Sony-Sinister-Six-021015-Dragonlord.jpg

According to Variety, Sony is still moving forward with the Spider-Man villain-centric Sinister Six, and Venom spinoff, as well as a film that features female characters in the Spider-Man universe. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been cancelled. While Marvel's Feige is involved with Sony's new Spider-Man films, he currently is not expected to be creatively involved with the spinoffs, sources say.

Marvel had originally wanted to buy back Spider-Man from Sony. But its resulting partnership, which was in the works since October, is just that - an arrangement that enables both Sony and Marvel to mutually benefit at the box office by having Spider-Man appear in their movies.

Marvel Studios won't pay Sony Pictures for the rights to put Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, the Avengers franchise or its other superhero films, as part of its new partnership with the studio, according to Variety. At the same time, Marvel won't receive a cut of the box office for any of Sony's films that feature Spider-Man. Sony won't receive a percentage of the revenue Disney makes from Marvel's films that have Spider-Man, either. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also won't receive payment for his role in helping revive Sony's Spider-Man franchise

Details of the Sony & Marvel SPIDER-MAN Deal Revealed

Marvel-Studios-Spider-Man-021015-Dragonlord.jpg

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed new details on the Sony/Marvel Spider-Man deal. Instead of Sony selling the superhero back to Marvel, it made a move no one expected: opting to lease the rights to the web-slinger to its rival for a single film.

Marvel has been trying for years to wrest the Spider-Man rights back from Sony, offering billions, sources say. But Sony, franchise-starved as it is, eschewed the quick cash to keep its $4 billion franchise in house.

Sources say no money changed hands between the two studios in the deal and is instead seen as a quid pro quo transaction. Sony benefits from the free exposure of a younger, rebooted Spider-Man in a film from red-hot Marvel, while Marvel gets its hands on the most prized superhero in its lucrative universe. Also, since Marvel controls the merchandising rights to Spider-Man, the effect this move will have on sales could be worth more than any cut they would have seen. Variety says Sony will get more than 60% of the ticket sales.

Though Spider-Man will first appear in an unnamed Marvel movie, Sony and producer Amy Pascal will have more influence over the actor cast in the iconic role because Sony retains final approval. The studio is currently looking for an actor much younger than 31-year-old Andrew Garfield as well as a writer for its reboot.

Director Marc Webb will not be back to complete a third Spider-Man. Amazing producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad have been downgraded to executive producers, with no real say in the creative direction of the franchise.

One knowledgeable source sees the move as a first step to Marvel re-acquiring the rights to Spider-Man down the road, while another believes Disney is positioning itself to acquire Sony should it ever become available.

J.K. Simmons Could Return as J.J. Jameson in New SPIDER-MAN

J-Jonah-Jameson-JK-Simmons-Dragonlord.jpg

Few can argue that J.K. Simmons' interpretation of J. Jonah Jameson was the best that the character received in any medium, including the comics. So much so, it's no surprise that the recent Amazing Spider-Man franchise reboot didn't even bother including him in either film.

But with a new slate of Spider-Man films potentially on the horizon, the project's developers might once again cast Simmons as the Daily Bugle's cigar-chomping editor-in-chief. While it would indicate a back-to-basics approach for the struggling Spider-Man franchise, the rumors are far from concrete.

Simmons, however, might have let the news slip during a recent interview with The Howard Stern show (via CBM). When asked if he was going to ever play J. Jonah Jameson again, Simmons responded, "I just heard that we...that that's a possibility!" Simmons went on to reaffirm that he would "absolutely" reprise the role if asked.

It's Official: SPIDER-MAN Joining Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Marvel-Studios-Spider-Man-Avengers-020915-Dragonlord.jpg

Spider-Man is getting a mighty Marvel makeover. Sony Pictures, which has been the steward of the franchise since 1999, is partnering up with Disney-owned Marvel Studios to bring a new version of the Spider-Man character to life. Latino Review was the first to report this a few weeks ago.

As part of the revamp, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film. The companies are not revealing details but that movie is likely to be Captain America: Civil War; the character was a major player in the comics storyline. Andrew Garfield is not expected to reprise the character.

Once the character is re-launched, Sony will then release a new Spider-Man movie on July 28, 2017. Marvel's Kevin Feige will join Amy Pascal as a producer on the new movie. The duo will "collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger," according to the companies. Ari Arad and Matt Tolmach, who were producers on the previous movie, will now executive produce.

There is also talk of looking ways to integrate characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the Marvel movies are known, into future Spider-Man films. The move is a major team-up for two rival studios. Spider-Man has been Sony's most lucrative franchise, but the most recent installment, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, disappointed. Disney's Marvel has had unprecedented success with its hero films.

Sony, however, will retain the final creative control and continue to finance, distribute, own the new movies.

To make room for Spider-Man, Marvel has pushed back a number of its films. Thor: Ragnarok has been moved to Nov. 3, 2017 from its July 28, 2017 date. Black Panther will now open July 6, 2018, moving from Nov. 3, 2017. Captain Marvel moved to Nov. 2, 2018 from July 6, 2018, while Inhumans is slotted for July 12, 2019, from its original Nov. 2, 2018 date.

Rumor: Sony and Marvel Deal; Spider-Man to Appear in Phase 3

Marvel-Studios-Spider-Man-011415-Dragonlord.jpg

According to news and rumor site Latino Review, a deal has been struck that will bring Spider-Man to Marvel Studios in time for the two-part Avengers: Infinity War mega-event. The word is that the long talks between Marvel and Sony have finally yielded results in the wake of a wave of criticism aimed at Sony's handling of the franchise following the recent Sony hack.

"I don't have the exact details nor a paper trail, but I'm told we'll see an MCU Spider-Man in Infinity Wars Part 1, as that was the next logical place to insert him after they missed the window to logically include him in Civil War," the report claims. The report also claims that the character will be recast, meaning Andrew Garfield is no longer Spider-Man.

The planned 2016 Spider-Man movie may be cancelled or may be a co-production between Sony and Marvel, says the report, but it won't go forward as originally planned. Given the relatively short production time on The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it's unlikely any immediate announcements will clear all this up, as they would have no need to do so right away.

[Update: When reached by CBR News, a Sony Pictures representative dismissed the report, calling it an "old rumor" with "no validity whatsoever." Whatever. I still believe Latino Review's report.]

Major Spoilers for Phase 3!!! If you discuss the below part, please go to the Avengers or Spider-Man threads and use spoiler tags.

Okay, so it seems Steve Rogers is gonna kick the bucket at the end of Captain America: Civil War. Word is it's the revelation that Bucky was responsible for Howard Stark's death that triggers the bad blood between Steve and Tony, and the end result is Crossbones taking out the Star Spangled Avenger. Info on what happens to Iron Man is vague, but it sounds as if he'll wind up in space somehow. In Thor: Ragnarok, lots of Asgardians will die and be resurrected, and the God of Thunder will be confined to a "galactic prison." This takes 3 of the main Avengers out of the picture for Infinity War Part 1, which will focus on a completely new team, along with Spidey of course! The roster is not yet finalized, but some potentials include: Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, Wasp, Captain Marvel, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jewel/Power Woman, any Guardian of the Galaxy, and any Inhuman. All classic Avengers will be absent from this lineup because the plan is to bring them back for Infinity War Part 2... yes, even the deceased Stevie Rogers.

Sony's Casting Suggestions for SINISTER SIX Movie Revealed

Sony-Spider-Man-Sinister-Six-122114-Dragonlord.jpg

Based on the Sony emails dated May 2014, here are the studio's casting suggestions for the Sinister Six movie. Drew Goddard apparently loved the idea of Tom Hardy playing Sandman, and in one email really pushed for Emily Blunt as Scorpia (who is an actual comic book character, and not just a female version of Scorpion). Amy Pascal put forward Emilia Clarke and Elizabeth Olsen, but noted that it was too late to do anything about the latter due to her Avengers: Age of Ultron role.

Sean Penn, Denzel Washington, George Clooney, and Daniel Craig were also all discussed/rejected for roles, with Penn directly mentioned as a Doctor Octopus candidate. Woody Harrelson is too. Colin Firth is also suggested as The Vulture. Going back to Sandman, he'll apparently be the movie's comic relief, and so a list of names are reeled off, including Danny McBride, Jonah Hill, Chris O'Dowd, Michael Pena, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, Sharlto Copley, and a number of others.

Amy Pascal "jokingly" suggests Jared Leto for Felicia Hardy and points out that Emily Blunt looked "anorexic" in a recent photo. Keri Russell might be too "Keri Russell" apparently, but she does like the thought of Ruth Wilson or Rose Byrne taking on the role of Scorpia. Idris Elba meanwhile is apparently "only good when he speaks British", and Pascal even suggests turning to Jackie Chan or "original bad guy Walter White" who she asks, "is he ever good in anything else".

Channing Tatum apparently wants to play Venom, but now that he's Gambit, that seems less likely. Doctor Octopus is described as the team's leader and needs to have quirks so as not to be boring as The Sinister Six's straight man. Avi Arad also suggested female Venom Ann Weiying for the female team spinoff, and Hannah Minghella brings up a suggestion made in jest by Emma Stone that she returns as Carnage (like in the Ultimate comics) as a "thought to consider for the future" because it "could be really cool/sexy/intense to see."

Marvel President Wanted to Burn Amazing Spider-Man 2 Script

Marvel-Comics-Spider-Man-121914-Dragonlord.jpg

TheMCUExchange has posted some screengrabs of even more leaked Sony Hack emails from two years ago in which Marvel President Alan Fine tears apart the divisive The Amazing Spider-Man 2. He makes a lot of really good points, but makes himself look somewhat foolish in a rambling paragraph which indicates that he's under the belief that these movies are/should be prequels to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. Forgive that though, and there's no denying that his harsh review of the sequel's script is spot on. Why repeat so much of what we've seen before? Why kill off Gwen Stacy so soon? Why does the villain need a convoluted origin story tied into Spider-Man?

The depressing thing here is that both Fine and Marvel's VP of Production Tom Cohen provided Sony Pictures with notes and they made absolutely no difference whatsoever. This was sent months after The Amazing Spider-Man earned $750 million compared to The Avengers' $1.5 billion, but Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci all clearly thought they knew better.

Sony's List Of Rejected Characters for SPIDER-MAN Franchise

Sony-Pictures-Spider-Ham-Dragonlord.jpg

Business Insider (via CBM) has posted a series of internal memos and spreadsheets from Sony Pictures that reveal prolonged negotiations between the studio and Marvel Comics over the rights for hundreds of different superhero characters in the Spider-Man franchise.

Marvel Comics owns the rights to the fictional characters in the Spider-Man comic books, but can sell the film rights to various studios. Sony wanted some characters, while others were flat-out rejected. Here are some of the characters in the list: Santa Claus Burglar, The Bombastic Bagman, Xandu the Unspeakable, Thermo the Thermatronic Man, Hypno-Hustler, Peter Porker a.k.a. Spider-Ham, The Black Abbot, Agent 003, Mother Inferior and The Thunder Cockroach.

Sony really wanted the rights to Santa Claus Burglar. His name appears on a 2011 internal document titled "Disputed characters list." Bag-Man was just Spider-Man with a bag over his head. The character has been "frozen," meaning Bag-Man won't be getting his own movie any time soon. Spider-Ham was a pig version of Spider-Man who possessed the abilities of a spider. Marvel informed Sony in 2011 that the character had been frozen.

The Black Abbot is a 1980s villain who owned a jet-craft, a hooded robe, and could shoot energy beams from his hands that turned people to ash. Sony didn't want this character at all. An internal document reads "We don't care about this character." Agent 003 is a spoof of James Bond and is on Sony's "Don't want" list. Sony decided against negotiating with Marvel for the rights to Mother Inferior, one document says "Recommend letting this one go."

Rumor: Marvel, Sony to Discuss SPIDER-MAN Deal in January

Marvel-Studios-Spider-Man-121414-Dragonlord.jpg

According to Screen Gonzo's sources, a meeting with executives from Marvel and Sony is to be held in January at Pinewood Studios, where the Avengers, along with numerous other popular movies, has been filming. This meeting of the minds will include Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal. There's not a a ton of details, but fans should have some "good news" come February, or at the very latest, just before the release of Age of Ultron in May, which makes a little more sense.

One plan, according to the source, is that Marvel would include an after-credits stinger that would center on Spider-Man. As we can expect, filming for Captain America: Civil War is gearing up for a February/March start, so the timing would certainly fit to get something like this filmed. The source says they are prepping 3 stages at Pinewood in anticipation of the Cap 3 project.

It appears that Feige is very pleased with the direction things are going in regards to a deal with Sony. Joe and Anthony Russo will be directing the third Captain America film, but they also plan on directing The Gray Man for Sony, before going on to (reportedly) direct Avengers: Infinity War. The plan, according to Screen Gonzo's insider, is that the Russo Brothers would then tackle a new Spider-Man trilogy, taking on directing and writing tasks. Marvel is already looking at a list of names to take on the mantle of Spider-Man.

Kevin Feige is very adamant about one thing: He wants Avi Arad out and Marvel seems to be backing him on this. Should this deal happen, Arad will be nowhere near the Spider-Man movies. However, Pascal and other Sony execs feel he's a crucial part of the previous Spidey films and feel he needs to stick around.

New Email Reveals Plans for Mega SPIDER-MAN Team-Up Movie

Columbia-Spider-Man-Sinister-Six-Dragonlord.jpg

In addition to a planned Spider-Man reboot (again), new documents discovered by The Daily Beast reveal some other interesting plans for Peter Parker and his web-slinging alter ego. An email dated October 13, 2014, from Michael De Luca, co-president of production for Columbia Pictures, to Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, reveals plans for a Spider-Man cameo in Captain America: Civil War, which is scheduled to hit theaters May 6, 2016.

"I really feel, in my heart of hearts, that the new spiderman in cap 3 could just appear in his own film, be it sinister six or a kick ass spidey film of his own, after that intro in cap 3 and people would be cool with it," wrote De Luca.

"[Simon] Kinberg told me fox is steering Xmen and Fantastic Four into an eventual team up film," added De Luca. "Seems to me maybe, since the Spider-man universe itself is deep, you guys should look at sinister six, new spidey, female movie and venom as linked pieces leading to eventual mega movie ala Feige and Fox and not stand alone single films. It's early in all these and you can still map out a blueprint for connective tissue."

Sony Plans to Reboot SPIDER-MAN... Again; Details Revealed

Sony-Spider-Man-Kravens-Last-Hunt-Dragonlord.jpg

The Daily Beast has now revealed new details from the hack revealing that Sony planned on rebooting the reboot to Spider-Man! This fresh news comes from an 8-page document (dated Nov. 13) sent from Jeff Robinov, head of Studio 8, to Amy Pascal, Sony Pictures co-chairman, outlining a plan to reboot the entire Spider-Man franchise. He compares Spidey to James Bond films.

"In the next Spider-Man movies," Robinov said. "We can't go back to his origin story. Think of the 25 films in the James Bond franchise; just because a new creative team comes aboard, and breathes new life into a classic property, doesn';t mean the origin story has to be retold."

Robinov follows this up with a long list of potential directors for the hypothetical reboot featuring a ton of familiar faces: Brad Bird (The Incredibles), Chris Buck & Jennifer Lee (Frozen), Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), Glenn Ficarra & John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), Don Hall & Chris Williams (Big Hero 6), Phil Lord & Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie), Joachim R

Andrew Garfield Reportedly Fired by Sony as SPIDER-MAN

Sony-Spider-Man-Andrew-Garfield-Dragonlord.jpg

Emails obtained by Mashable show that Sony had agreed to shelve plans for a writing deal on Amazing Spider-man 3 as of August 8, 2014 (click the spoiler tag below to view it). Moreover, it appears that Garfield may be out as Spider-man altogether. Garfield has been praised for his performance as Peter Parker, but his critical remarks that seemed to blame the studio for Amazing Spider-man 2's tepid box office and critical reception may have annoyed the wrong people.

Garfield also stood up Sony at a corporate dinner in July. Garfield's attendance was going to be mentioned by Sony CEO Kaz Hirai and he was supposed to sit with some top Sony executives. His absence (with less than an hour of notice) was seen as an affront and slight by the company's Tokyo bosses.

As of October 2014, it looks like Garfield is out of the franchise for good. In an email to The Amazing Spider-Man franchise producer Matthew Tolmach, Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal outlines some potential plans for introducing the new Peter Parker and Spider-Man characters in Captain America 3: "I love introducing pp [Peter Parker] in cap but I know it comes with so many things since we won't give them what they want what will we give them? We can say it's a cameo but I'll bet it's more and will involve some of his world and it will be peter and spidey right."

Details on Marvel Studios' Plans for Future SPIDER-MAN Films

Marvel-Studios-Spider-Man-121214-Dragonlord.jpg

Latino Review has learned some more details about the Spider-Man rights-sharing deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures and what Spider-Man's potential return to Marvel would entail. The 60/40 split still looks to be the divide with Sony handling distribution. However, Marvel's not inclined to give Sony creative control over the character, nor planning on honoring the contracts with Sony's Spider-Stars.

More poking into the origins of the Aunt May solo film and Female Spider movie rumors revealed that these were actual Sony Picture Entertainment plans that Marvel knew about and severely disliked. Now that Marvel can have the rights to the character back, they plan to wipe the slate with the Amazing Spider-Man universe.

  • If the Marvel/Sony deal were to go forward, Andrew Garfield would no longer be Peter Parker and any baggage from existing films, Raimi or Webb, would be non-canonical, Marvel doesn't want any part of those films.

  • The idea is that the Spider-Man romance movie has been played out over five installments, so any new Spider-Man films would focus on the difficulties of being a teenager and a superhero with a romance side-story, not the film's focus.

  • Marvel also thinks that the origin story is well-trodden territory, so any Spider-Man movies under this deal would begin with Peter Parker already leading a dual life. But as of now Spider-Man will NOT be in Civil War. Marvel reportedly has a script nailed down.
Marvel's desire to remove Andrew Garfield from the role was a major point of contention with Sony's Amy Pascal, traditionally a stalwart defender of the talent in her films. However, current events leave her positioned slightly weakened.

Russo Brothers Offers to Produce Sony's SPIDER-MAN Films

Russo-Brothers-Spider-Man-Dragonlord.jpg

The Brazilian website overtice.com has uncovered more leaked Sony emails and this one includes Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo reaching out to Sony Entertainment Chairman Amy Pascal to produce Sony's Spider-Man films. The Russo brothers begin their email to Pascal with, "A pity that negotiations with Marvel did not work."

They're referring to the proposed deal with Marvel Studios that would have brought Spider-Man into the Marvel cinematic universe by giving him a cameo in Captain America: Civil War. They then let Pascal know that they will be directing Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2, but that obligation won't prevent them from directing The Gray Man beforehand for Sony.

Then on November 17, Joe Russo sent Pascal an email offering to have him and his brother produce Sony's Spider-Man films through their newly-formed production company, Bullitt. He acknowledges that a "difficult conversation" would have to take place with current Spider-Man producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad, but Russo says it would be a "conversation worth having." As far as overtice.com knows, Pascal never replied to Russo's offer. Keep in mind, Sony's computer system was shutdown just a week after Russo sent that email, so Pascal very well could have by now.

Brazilian website, overtice.com, came across some other great tidbits. In previous emails, Pascal begged Sam Raimi to help her with Spidey but in another email she tells a Sony exec that she doesn't need his help because he went "Joel Schumacher on the third." In a separate email, Avi Arad begs Pascal to give him the green light on a Venom movie because the toys and video games based on the character are popular. Lastly, Motion Picture Group President Jeff Robinov warns Pascal not to make a deal with Marvel, but you have to question his advice as he still thinks Stan Lee can create more characters in the Spider-Man universe for Sony. Click here to read the emails.

Venom or Carnage Could Be the Main Villain in SINISTER SIX

Venom-Carnage-121214-Dragonlord.jpg

The latest Sony emails to leak online involve Spider-Man film producer Matt Tolmach, Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Amy Pascal and Columbia Pictures president of production Michael De Luca. Pascal informs De Luca that Tolmach wants to introduce Venom in the Sinister Six movie because he doesn't think the character could support a film on his own.

The Sinister Six movie will feature Spider-Man teaming up with the Sinister Six to take down an even bigger threat, and Tolmach wants the main villains to be either be Venom or Carnage. If it is the latter, Spider-Man will wear his black suit in the film. Spidey will remove the black suit when he can't handle being teased about the look by members of the Sinister Six. And whoever finds Spidey's discarded suit will then become Venom.

De Luca explained to Pascal all of the options their Spider-Man franchise had in front of them at that time. De Luca brings up the previously-confirmed deal Marvel Studios offered Sony, which would allow Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make a cameo in Captain America: Civil War. If the deal was agreed upon, De Luca reports that Marvel would introduce a brand new Spider-Man. See you later, Andrew Garfield.

De Luca seems gung-ho about the cameo. He thinks it could spark new interest in the Spider-Man franchise. Fans would look forward to Spidey's next film without Sony having to make a Sinister Six film. Either way, De Luca would be happy with whatever direction Marvel president Kevin Feige chose for Spider-Man.

De Luca also proposed another Spider-Man reboot, but this time, it won't spend a lot of its time on Spidey's origin or his parents like The Amazing Spider-Man films did. De Luca also thinks Venom, Carnage and Hobgoblin would be nice addition to a reboot. He especially likes that the Ultimate Venom because his suit isn't formed from an alien symbiote. De Luca would like the to explore the modern Spider-Man comic book stories written by Michael Bendis, Michael Strascynski and Brain K. Vaughn.

Sony and Marvel's SPIDER-MAN Deal Reportedly Still Alive

Avengers-Spider-Man-100714-Dragonlord.jpg

While the recent hack into Sony Pictures revealed that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures tried, then failed, to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a new report claims that the deal might not be so dead. According to Latino-Review, Sony may be reconsidering their position with Marvel Studios and Spider-Man, in light of the attention that the hacking debacle has placed on them.

Latino-Review's sources say that the higher higher ups at Sony think that a partnership is still possible. Sony Japan thinks the Marvel deal for Spider-Man is still on the table and they want to renegotiate as a return to quality, the 60/40 split is can be negotiated and Sony Entertainment's October hard-line stance of wanting creative control is now mostly moot in the eyes of the higher-ups. In exchange, Marvel would reclaim creative control over Spider-Man and allow him to cross into other Marvel movies like Captain America: Civil War.

As Latino-Review notes, Sony's main concern is producing "quality" films. Marvel has been doing a much better job at doing that than Sony Pictures, leading Sony to believe relinquishing a cinematic Spider-Man to steadier hands is worth the creative and financial sacrifice.

Sony Talked with Marvel on Making a New SPIDER-MAN Trilogy

Spider-Man-Marvel-Studios-120914-Dragonlord.jpg

Sony Pictures has considered partnering with Marvel and producing an animated comedy as it looks to revamp its big screen strategy for Spider-Man. Details of the discussions are contained in e-mails to and from Sony's motion picture chief Amy Pascal, which were released on the Internet by hackers this week. The e-mails reveal extensive discussions between executives at Sony and Marvel owner Walt Disney, all the way up to their respective chief executives Kaz Hirai and Robert Iger.

In an Oct. 30 e-mail, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad tells Ms. Pascal about a potential scenario that would see Marvel produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies while Sony retains creative control, marketing and distribution. In a separate e-mail, Ms. Pascal tells a business partner that Marvel wanted to include Spider-Man in its planned third Captain America movie. Sony also considered bringing back Sam Raimi as a director or producer.

The talks with Marvel eventually broke down and Sony is now planning to go ahead with its own Spider-Man slate, according to people familiar with the matter. As of late November, executives were planning a "Spidey summit" for January to discuss future plans. Among projects in development are an animated Spider-Man comedy that would be produced by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the team behind 22 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, as well as previously disclosed Spider-Man spin-offs focused on villain team Sinister Six, super-foe Venom, and women from the webslinger's life.

Rumor: Sony Now Working on Aunt May Standalone Movie??

Spider-Man-Aunt-May-111014-Dragonlord.jpg

It's been obvious from the various and absolutely crazy rumors about upcoming Spider-Man movies that Sony is struggling to find a direction for the franchise and the crazier the rumors get the more it seems like they'd rather milk the property from every single angle rather than give the main character back to Marvel. What started as rumors of villain-centric series, The Sinister Six and Venom, has been transformed by the increasing chorus of disappointed sighs from Amazing Spider-Man 2 to Venom: Carnage and "a female lead Spider-Man movie" that might be a crazy movie codenamed Glass Ceiling that features female Spider-Man Universe characters that have never been team-up before in history, let alone on screen.

Now, Latino Review is reporting that Sony is pursuing an Aunt May movie. Yes, an Aunt May movie. A movie about Aunt May as a youth, before she was shouldered with the responsibility of raising Peter Parker. The target mood is some sort of espionage story in the vein of AMC's Mad Men, which sounds like a way of saying "classier Agent Carter."

Marvel released a Mark Millar-penned romance mini-series in 2003 called Trouble that they thought would be the new origin of Spider-Man. It featured teenage versions of Aunt May, Uncle Ben, Richard and Mary Parker. Through a convoluted series of events, May gets teen-pregnant by Richard but gave up baby Peter to Mary who takes the secret of Peter's true parentage to her grave. Spider-Man fans were not happy and the story didn't sell too well, so that was the end of any attempts to focus on young Aunt May and thereby Spider-Man's origin reverted back to not-being-the-child-of-Aunt-May.

Rumor: All-Female SPIDER-MAN Team-Up Pic GLASS CEILING

15gdl5h.jpg

When it was initially revealed that Sony was planning a female Spider-Man spinoff, the studio appeared to be ahead of the curve. But it sounds like Sony might even be going one better in its planned female Spider-Man spinoff. Devin Faraci at Badass Digest is hearing that the studio is developing a team-up movie based on an original concept not from the comics called Glass Ceiling (tentative title). The plan for this movie is for all the female Spider-Man characters to come together in one film. There are no specifics as to which characters will be used, but the site throws out Black Cat, Silver Sable, Spider-Girl, Silk, and possibly Spider-Woman as likely inclusions.

The site points out that there aren't that many female Spider-Man characters that exist even in the comics. The site mentions the Spider-Verse event that Marvel is kicking off next week is set to show us every version of Spider-Man in the entire multiverse. This could potentially lead to the creation of female versions of other Spider-Man characters that Sony could then use in their film.

The report stresses that Sony really doesn't have its Spider-Man plans firmed up after the disastrous Amazing Spider-Man 2 threw their franchise ideas into question, but this Glass Ceiling movie is apparently one idea that's being kicked around. The site notes that, while this is an idea that Sony has been kicking around for a while, the studio seems a little aimless and confused about where to go with Spider-Man next.

Lastly, the site thinks all the talk of the studio giving Spidey to Marvel is pretty wild and out there; a sharing deal isn't impossible, but Sony has not fallen far enough for that yet. Are there talks? Probably. But Sony is not ready to make that leap.

Rumor: SPIDER-MAN Rebooted and Recast in SINISTER SIX?

Sinister-Six-041114-Dragonlord.jpg

Yesterday, it was reported that Sony may start sharing Spider-Man with Marvel Studios in order to help bolster its film franchise. Today, Badass Digest is now reporting some interesting stories they've heard from their sources about Sony's plans for Spider-Man, Sinister Six and the Venom movies:

- Sony is going to soft reboot Spider-Man with The Sinister Six, having a new actor playing a Spidey who works with the villains The Dirty Dozen style to take down a larger threat.

- Sony is going to put Spider-Man on the shelf for four or five years and see if they can develop any of the side characters into their own franchises.

- Badass Digest is hearing that the Venom movie is functionally dead again.

The second of those plans falls in line with Sony's decision to push Amazing Spider-Man 3 back to a 2018 release. If the second turns out to be true, it calls into question any plans that Sony may have had for future stories featuring Spider-Man, as played by Andrew Garfield. Sony plans to release The Sinister Six in November of 2016. We'll have to wait to see if it includes Spider-Man, played by Garfield or otherwise.

Sony in Talks to Add SPIDER-MAN to Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Avengers-Spider-Man-100614-Dragonlord.jpg

Everyone else is just playing Marvel's game at this point. Marvel is driving the entire conversation right now. Everyone else is reacting to them, or being forced to try to emulate them, or making a conscious decision not to react to them, which is still a reaction, and through it all, Marvel is making the choices they're making based on a long-range story-driven game plan that takes business considerations into account but that also seems designed to ever keep anyone from being in the position of being able to ruin their plans over money.

There's a fairly pronounced antagonism between Fox and Marvel these days, and it's just going to get stranger as the publishing version of Marvel seems to be making some very strategic decisions about the characters that Fox owns. Deadpool's movie may have finally been announced, but it looks like Marvel's planning to kill Deadpool in the very near future. The rumors about the end of publication for Fantastic Four were denied for months, but now look to be true. And the status quo in the world of the X-Men is in ruins in a way that looks nothing like the movies currently being made. Whatever Marvel's future is, the Fox deal remains a thorn in their side, a sequester of some of their biggest characters that looks unlikely to ever change.

Sony, on the other hand, may be doing things the opposite way. While there's no confirmations on the story, HitFlix is hearing that there are some very cool Spider-Man plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the onscreen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom's minds. What seems clear from what HitFlix has heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will, and that means the world gets bigger again.

Andrew Garfield Blames Studio for SPIDER-MAN 2's Failures

Amazing-Spider-Man-2-Andrew-Garfield-020314-Dragonlord.jpg

Andrew Garfield: "I read a lot of the reactions from people and I had to stop because I could feel I was getting away from how I actually felt about it. For me, I read the script that Alex [Kurtzman] and Bob [Orci] wrote, and I genuinely loved it. There was this thread running through it. I think what happened was, through the pre-production, production, and post-production, when you have something that works as a whole, and then you start removing portions of it because there was even more of it than was in the final cut, and everything was related."

"Once you start removing things and saying, 'No, that doesn't work,' then the thread is broken, and it's hard to go with the flow of the story. Certain people at the studio had problems with certain parts of it, and ultimately the studio is the final say in those movies because they're the tentpoles, so you have to answer to those people."

"But I'll tell you this. Talking about the experience as opposed to how it was perceived, I got to work in deep scenes that you don't usually see in comic book movies, and I got to explore this orphan boy, a lot of which was taken out, and which we'd explored more. It's interesting to do a postmortem. I'm proud of a lot of it and had a good time, and was a bit taken aback by the response."

"It's a discernment thing. What are the people actually saying? What's underneath the complaint, and how can we learn from that? We can't go, 'Oh God, we fucked up because all these people are saying all these things. It's shit.' We have to ask ourselves, 'What do we believe to be true?' Is it that this is the fifth Spider-Man movie in however many years, and there's a bit of fatigue? Is it that there was too much in there? Is it that it didn't link? If it linked seamlessly, would that be too much? Were there tonal issues? What is it? I think all that is valuable. Constructive criticism is different from people just being dicks, and I love constructive criticism. Hopefully, we can get underneath what the criticism was about, and if we missed anything."

Sony Planning Female SPIDER-MAN Spinoff for 2017 Release

Black-Cat-Felicia-Hardy-Dragonlord.jpg

After dating The Sinister Six for 2016 and pushing back The Amazing Spider-Man 3 by two years, Sony is turning its sights on creating a female superhero movie to add to its Spider-Man universe. Lisa Joy has been hired to work on the script for the female-centered story. While we don't know exactly which crime-fighter Sony plans to center on, a few that come to mind are Black Cat, Silver Sable and Spider-Woman. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing.

After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had a disappointing performance at the box office this summer, Sony pushed the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which had been dated for June 10, 2016, to 2018. Sinister Six, which focuses on the villains of the Spider-Man universe, will hit theaters on Nov. 11, 2016. Drew Goddard will direct.

Joy co-created and executive produced HBO's Westworld, which stars Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood, and is going into production. Previously working TV's Burn Notice and Pushing Daisies, Joy also sold her script Reminiscence, a sci-fi thriller about a service that lets people relive their memories, to Legendary in October 2013.

Sony Planning Female Superhero Movie in Spider-Man Universe for 2017 Release

Comments: If they stick to what they planted in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Felicity Jones could become the Black Cat, a.k.a., Felicia Hardy. In the film, Jones played Felicia (no last name), the assistant of Harry Osborn. Hope they cast another actress to play Black Cat. I don't think they can use Spider-Woman/Jessica Drew either. I think she's with Marvel Studios. Spider-Woman is not related to the Spider-Man world and she is more known as an Avengers or SHIELD agent.

The secret 2017 movie is likely going to be Black Cat but Silver Sable would be an interesting option also. She's rich, classy and a mercenary leading an elite special unit. It'll be like their version of Batman meets Black Widow. And in light of Scarlett Johansson's Lucy strong box office performance, Sony might want to cash in on this trend.

SPIDER-MAN Fatique Behind Sony's Release Date Retreat

Amazing-Spider-Man-2-Catches-Police-Car-Dragonlord.jpg

In a surprise move, Sony announced a few hours ago that it bumped The Amazing Spider-Man 3 back by two years, from 2016 to 2018. After this summer's disappointing Amazing Spider-Man 2 showed signs of franchise fatigue, the Marvel superhero has moved from the fast track to the back burner. There's no shame in $705 million at the box office. But when the film in question is part of the Spider-Man franchise - the fifth-highest-grossing film series and the most successful comic book franchise of all time - that's cause for concern on the Sony lot.

Spidey has been on a downward trajectory ever since the five-film franchise reached its apex in 2007, when Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 earned $891 million worldwide. Reviews for Amazing Spider-Man 2 were lukewarm (just 53 percent fresh on Rottentomatoes) and some fans have complained that the "reimagined" Spider-Man movies are too similar to the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films they rebooted.

"If I could sum up in one thought the reason [for the slide], it's competition," a Sony source says. "Captain America being out a month before us domestically might have, to some extent, satisfied the pent-up demand for a superhero movie. And there was a lot of competition after we opened as well."

If competition proved to be Peter Parker's biggest obstacle in 2014, he was poised to face an even more daunting 2016. Within four weeks of ASM3's original June 10 release date, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America 3 and X-Men: Apocalypse all are slated to hit theaters. With that lineup of foes, Sony decided it needed more time to help the superhero reclaim his mojo.

Privately, Sony admits it is seeking to freshen the brand but has no major overhaul plans, with Webb expected to return to complete the trilogy (as Raimi did with the first three films).

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 Release Pushed Back 2 Years to 2018

2vmgimh.jpg

Watch out Avengers, X-Men and Justice League. Sony is entering the fray with its own comic book superteam. The studio has dated The Sinister Six, a movie that features an all-star lineup of Spider-Man villains, for Nov. 11, 2016. As part of the move, Sony pushed back The Amazing Spider-Man 3 by two years to 2018. Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 had already been dated for June 10, 2016, and May 4, 2018, respectively.

Drew Goddard is set to write and direct. First introduced in 1964, the original Six members were Electro, Doctor Octopus, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Vulture and Sandman. Electro, portrayed by Jamie Foxx, was already introduced in Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 this summer.

It is unclear which villains this incarnation will feature. Among the possibilities are the Green Goblin, played by Dane DeHaan in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The film's third act dropped so-called Easter eggs that hinted at potential future villains for the franchise. For instance, Doc Ock's mechanical arms were seen in the background of one scene. The movie also introduced the Rhino (Paul Giamatti) in its last scene.

Rumor: Sony Might Sell SPIDER-MAN Rights Back to Marvel?

Marvel-Studios-Amazing-Spider-Man-Dragonlord.jpg

Spider-Man back at Marvel Studios? That's what Chronicle scribe Max Landis claims. In a recent Twitter binge, Landis reveals that Kevin Feige's inhouse production company won back the cinematic rights to Spidey. He tweeted, "Crazy about Marvel getting Spider-Man back, that's gonna be bonkers. There's a chance I wasn't supposed to tweet that."

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 delivered less than stellar results at the domestic box office (lowest in franchise history) and a "rotten" rating at Rotten Tomatoes (the first in franchise history). Combine that with Sony's broader box office difficulties, and Landis doesn't seem so far fetched.

The Register is reporting that Sony is looking to sell off some of their movie properties, including Spider-Man and Resident Evil. Apparently, Sony Pictures is going through some financial issues. This is basically a cost cutting measure in order to put more work and effort into the company's electronics division.

AICN contacted Sony's Amy Pascal and she said that they would "Never ever ever" let go of Spider-Man. The reports says that "She feels the property is directly tied to her legacy and time at Sony. Not just that, she is really thrilled by the work on the new film. So as expected there it is. Marvel will never get Spider-Man back

Avi Arad Says Crossover Only Possible If Spider-Man Is the Star

Avi-Arad-Spider-Man-042714-Dragonlord.jpg

Producer Avi Arad considers Spider-Man the center of the Marvel universe and if there will be movie crossover in the future, the ex Marvel Studios CEO/founder says Spidey, not The Avengers, should be "king." Unlike the comic book world, Marvel is splintered onscreen these days. Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man. Fox owns The X-Men, Fantastic Four. And Disney/Marvel owns everything else, including the Avengers, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man and Captain America. Can a crossover happen onscreen? "Oh yes, studios are incredibly friendly to each other, they have breakfasts with each other," Arad says with cheerful sarcasm.

"I think there are some stories that will fit beautifully into a cross. Spider-Man would be incredible mixed up with those other universes. But if we want to do that, the crossovers, it has to be a story that is absolutely centered on Spider-Man. We cannot be second banana to anything out there. Because this is the king. This is the one that influenced young people from birth. I'm not preaching, but Spider-Man, Peter Parker, who is in all of us, is too important to go in and use it as a sidepiece for corporate purposes. The studio may disagree with me, some fans may disagree with me. I don't care."

"The Avengers, Iron Man, of course, I see all of them. I view them all as my children. The Avengers was in the plan for a long time, it had to be built over the years. Iron Man, people thought we were nuts. They thought this was some kind of competition in Hawaii. For me all these movies, when they're good and they tell you something, I feel like I'm watching my grandchildren play."

Producers Say Don't Expect Spider-Man to Be in The Avengers

Produer Avi Arad: "I think I'm probably a little bit of the militant here. I think it will take a moment in which we've run out of ideas. There's so much to tell about Spider-Man. There's so much to tell about the Sinister Six. The relationship between Spider-Man and Venom will bring a whole other world in. But we really feel very confident that we have so much to do. Peter Parker is unique; he's really different. He's not an Avenger. He's not an X-Man. He's unique and we revere that."

Producer Matt Tolmach: "When you think about the Sinister Six and you think about Venom and you think about Carnage and you think Spider-Man in whatever way you want in association with those movies, they feel like they're built for Spider-Man. Like that's where his story needs to go and wants to go and it has to be about more than a stunt."

"Stunts can be cool but it's also a business, and so the other side of the answer is they're owned by different companies. And there's a ton left in Sony's world; there's a lot of business left because there's a lot of story left. So for them to want to take this character and put it with Marvel and Disney is a huge undertaking and probably, as Avi's saying, isn't necessary until you feel like, "Wow, we're sort of out of ideas. What should we do?" And we're far from out of ideas."

This does nothing for me. Start casting grown men.

what a heartthrob, i can see him getting with gwen stacy, mary jane and the black cat.

serious note, what movie of his should we watch to get more familiar with his acting?

I am still hoping they are using him for some sort of flashback scene. Wishful thinking I guess since if they were casting older, we would have heard about it now.

So this is the kid who will be porking Black Cat??

I don't mind him being young. It's supposed to be slightly uncomfortable that a grown woman wants to screw Spiderman when he's actually just a teenager.

Holland is really tiny and a brit...weird casting. I give credit to Marvel on one thing though, they are so media savvy.

They hire a complete nobody Jon Watt, to direct, and bury the news under the casting announcement. Hardly anyone will notice or raise much fuss...at least not yet. I guess Feige is basically directing (not necessarily a bad thing).

Are they EVER going to make a good casting for Spiderman? Each one is worse than the last. Though I think Marvel still has better casting overall than DC, they just got a bunch of 18 year old metrosexuals for all their new movies.

not familiar with this holland kid but I'm just glad we finally got our spidey. plus marvel's usually spot on with their castings so no worries from me.

I think they're basig the character more on the Ultimate Spiderman version. Ultimate Peter Parker was always drawn as tiny and skinny in comparison to every other superpowered character.

Look here for example...

Now, given that they've cast a Peter that's so young, I may suggest to the Power That Be that the perfect age appropiate Mary Jane Watson would be Molly C. Quinn, from Castle.
