Fact is that a hellva lot of American industry and modern conveniences we take for granted were a direct result of Socialism , i.e. public funded . The internet you are using has its origins in the government funded ARPANET . The Satellites we take for granted has its origins in government funded programs , including the rocket programs that Von Braun was instrumental in.

You bring up certain instances of socialist countries being worse for wear as if it is an indictiment on Socialism per se (and by Socialism I mean public funding). Hey why don't we say Capitalism is shit since the Gulf Arabs are Capitalists and they practice slavery and highly exploitative capitalism. Or how about the exploitative and abusive nature of Capitalism in the early 1900s and before, which only changed because Unions emerged and fought for a fair wage and work safety.

Edit: I'm not denying that there are great and beautiful places in California it's just that my perception of it has changed over the last 10-15 years.

There are also some liberal values that I can identify with, but between the cost of living and the far left politics California went from a state that I would have killed to live in to a state that I no longer even care if I visit.

Growing up in the 80's and 90's I thought of California like this...
