Matt Serra was outstriking GSP before he hurt him and made GSP tap to strikes. Fight was not a fluke

GSP fans are officially the worst fanbase. At least the ConorTards have a sense of humor.

Fedor fans are far far worse.... At least Conor fans have the excuse of being relatively new to watching the sport....

Gsp completely changed his style after that fight. He used to be like a karate dude with good bjj. Now hes a LNPer with a jab

He was winning the fight before he hurt GSP. Not a fluke.

he hurt him with a missed right hand, instead the forearm hit gsp in the back of the head and rocked him beyond recoverability
total fuckin fluke by a guy with 0 knockouts. he was a decision machine. always a B fighter. thats why gsp steamrolled him with ease in the rematch.

GSP fans are worse than Fedor fans. There is no fanbase so deluded and so desperate to disqualify and hate on other fighters as GSP fans.

Bisping's chances of beating Rockhold in the rematch was even smaller.

Serra was like +900 vs GSP in the first fight. I can't remember what GSP was but I'm guessing like -750. It was 10 years ago and I didn't start betting and paying attention to lines until 2013.

Rockhold was -900 and Bisping was +1200 for their rematch. I know that for a fact because I wanted to bet on Rockhold but I wasn't going to wage $2k to win $220. Good for me.
The Vegas odds are not reflective of actual odds of winning though. Those are the mathematical formulas that casinos use to determine how to best make money given the amount of bets that they will receive from people so that the house wins. They are based on public opinion, not probabilities for winning.

There is no way that Serra had a better win probability than Bisping. But that sort of thing isn't officially measured.

Or avoided them for four years, then returned as a middleweight.
Middleweight is johnys division you derp. Gsp is fighting for a title that Johny can't even get near

He was winning the fight before he hurt GSP. Not a fluke.
Making this statement is dumb. Nothing of note happened before he hurt him. If by winning you mean possibly was up on strikes landed then maybe you could be correct but saying it wasn't a fluke based on the striking before GSP got caught doesn't make sense.

Yes, he's certainly done an amazing job riding through the ranks at middleweight.

No wait, he got his ass beat so hard by Hendricks that he got brain damage, avoided drug testing for four years, and is now facing the worst champion in middleweight history after years of refusing to fight in the division.

Serra vs GSP we had never seen before and had no way to truly predict what was going to happen. We had known Serra was fantastic on the ground but never got to see his striking on display. People in general underestimated his power. He proved all wrong.

For the Bisping vs Rockhold rematch was already had a pretty good understanding of what was going to happen. In the first fight, the first round was competitive but still one sided in Rockhold's favor. Comfortable 10-9 for him. In the second round Rockhold just smoked him.

For the rematch, Bisping did something he had never did before: KO someone dead like that with his hands in the first round. We all joked before about Bisping's pillow hands. Usually Bisping gets a decision or TKO based on accumulated damage and points built up by his volume/pressure kickboxing game. Never a KO.

So imo Bisping over Rockhold 2 is the greatest upset ever followed by Serra/GSP.

Matt Serra vs GSP 1 was not a fluke.

Matt Serra was outstriking GSP before GSP got rocked by Serra's right. Serra was landing good punches (to the head and body) and leg kicks before hurting GSP with the right. Serra landed more significant strikes than GSP before he rocked GSP. Rewatch the fight and tell me I'm wrong.

http://m.espn.com/extra/mma/fightstatistics?fightId=151836

Serra landed a total of 20 significant strikes

GSP landed a total of 6 significant strikes.

Some people, especially GSP fans, say that the first fight was a fluke but the stats and strikes landed say otherwise.

Thoughts?

Why are we talking about a fight that happened in April of 2007? Both fighters have changed since then. GSP went on to win 12 fights in a row after that. Serra lost to GSP in a rematch and went 1-2 before retiring.

The fight does not tell us much about GSP, unless you believe humans are static and fighters are defined by a single fight more than 10 years ago.

I have a theory - you hate GSP and want to create a thread to emphasize his most humiliating loss. Congrats. It happened. George Bush was president at the time, Conor McGregor was 19 and hadn't even started his professional career, and Randy Couture was the UFC Heavyweight champion.

You need to move on. Talk about something relevant. I've seen this thread 1000 times. I appreciate that you think it triggers GSP fans but it only makes you looks petty and stuck in 2007. Next you'll be talking about Tim Sylvia v. Jeff Monson and UFC fighters who wore shoes in the octogon.

Rematch was a fluke, Serra wins 9 out of 10 times.

It's a relevant fight, and now that GSP is returning, a good point to analyse GSP's chances against Bisping.

After that loss, GSP changed his style a lot, and became an extremely conservative fighter, and didn't finish any fight from 2009 to his retirement in 2013.

Also, that fight showed something that does not change: heart. GSP tapped to strikes, looked for a way out. Bisping will put a lot of pressure, and there's little reason to believe that GSP will endure.

Thats why GSP stands for Golden Standard Pussy. The only MMA champion to give up the championship twice. Once by tapping out like a girl by punches. The second time he was GIFTED a decision in a fight he got battered in and knew he lost...and feared a rematch. SO he dropped the belt and went to look for aliens. So he set the GOLD standard for the tough fighting champion who is willing to leave his belt behind. He has no heart. He basically invented LAY and PRAY at its finest. I hope Bisping makes him give up on the stool.

That fight wasn't a fluke at all. Serra had legit world class BJJ skills under Renzo, brute strength and knockout power.

It was a fluke in the sense that it would never happen again and only happened because GSP believed his own hype and didn't take Serra seriously.
