Karate blackbelts in MMA

If I didn't know the listed fighters had a karate black belt in common could I tell by watching them fight? What is a trademark of a karate fighter in mma?
The different karate styles vary in terms of technique. For shotokan, like machida, i would say the footwork and punches. For point karate like wonderboy I would say kicks and movement. For me its hard to tell kyokushin guys because I'm not as familiar with the art.

For Kyokushin I'd say you would notice powerful low kicks and body punches.
@shinkyoku, You might want to elaborate?

yeah for that guy you just posted i wouldnt have been able to tell he was kyokushin. Usually its the kicks that let me know. I guess i could see a karate base with GSP. i heard his trainer say he had a stiff karate style.

You mean Brian Gassaway?
He's from Shidokan and since that style is a hybrid (knockdown Karate + Muay Thai + grappling) I think it would be hard to pinpoint any apparent trademarks.

The Crane Kick of course!

OK, this is interesting.
Conor McGregor watching a Karate demo (yes, it's sport Karate and their shouting is cringe-worthy, sorry for that) and then speaking not only with respect but with actual PRAISE for Karate and TMAs in general! Did not expect that from Connor. (he starts speaking around 4:10 in the vid)

haha I love it, though I'm not suprised. Conor was definitely influenced by gunnar nelsons sport karate background and he loves bruce lee.

Bruce Lee for sure but influenced by Nelson's sport karate? Did I miss anything?

what do you mean? as far as I know nelson does japanese goju ryu, which is alot like shotokan at this point. They are team mates and everything, i just assumed thats where he got his below the belt movement from.

Yeah I do know that Nelson's Goju was pretty much sport Shotokan-ish and his standup shows that and I also do know that he's Conor's team mate BUT do you genuinely think Conor learned from Nelson? I mean, it's not impossible but I am a bit skeptical.

well i saw a video of conor fighting when he was 19. totally different style. feet close together type shits. now he has that wonderful long stance and galloping footwork you get from shotokan. I dont know where else he wouldve gotten it.

That's interesting.
But note that Johnny Dargan used to be Conor's striking coach and he's a TKD guy. Not sure what background Owen Roddy has - boxing? I wonder if we can dig deeper and find out who influenced Conor's stance change.

but you know what I'm talking about since you did karate. when you get conditioned to those low stances and you just bound around easily like its nothing. not everyone can do that man. its so sick. anyway sorry to ramble. but yeah it would be interesting to know.

I think I found some validation of the presence of Karate in Conor's style - as you correctly suspected.

"He has an extensive background in western boxing so you see that element in his game. But, other than that, I don't know what he's doing with himself, to be honest. He watches Bruce Lee movies and takes techniques from that. Gunni has taught him some karate moves. Conor's also looked at capoeira for kicking techniques."

“I always love to learn. I always look at everything. I spend all day looking at videos, or in the gym working on the things that I’ve seen. I started out doing some kickboxing and boxing, then a little Capoeira, Tae Kwon Do and Karate.”

NAME: Jason David Frank
COUNTRY: USA
STYLE: Shotokan
RANK: Black belt (7th dan!)
RECORD: 1-0 (4-0 amateur)
WIKI: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_David_Frank

Yup, that's the original Green Ranger (from the Power Rangers). Actually a very legit martial artist, 7th dan in Shotokan, Purple belt in BJJ, Ajarn degree in MT (whatever that means). Unbeaten in amateur and pro MMA (5 fights in total). Not bad for a kids show actor.
