The big problem in my eyes is that alot of LHW names were specialists. This is true today as well.
Chuck- Striker with TDD, Shogun- Muay Thai with decent defensive grappling, Cormier- high pressure fighter with okay striking, Johnson- hard hitter with a low grappling ceiling.
Jon Jones, love him or hate him, really was one of the first big LHW's that could do it all. His one flaw was that he lacked KO power in his hands and tended to rely on open palms to maintain distance, but he was a dangerous wrestler with killer ground and pound and a cagey striker who utilized his reach well. The closest we've come to an all-around fighter next to Jones is probably Cormier or Rashad, and I'd argue both of them had a very low ceiling on their striking and had to regularly fall back on being some of the best MMA wrestlers in the world.
So...it's hard to say. There have definitely been better strikers than Jones, and even better pure wrestlers. But the thing about Jones is that he had an answer for anything you could throw at him, and I just can't think of another Light Heavweight who can say the same thing. Rampage? Machida? Hendo? Not like Jones.
Thus, if you take Jones out, it's almost impossible to find someone else who can even compare as an all-around fighter.
