So cut the entire roaster?
That's a horrible plan. People don't just conviently walk around at 170 155 205 exactly. In almost every case even if it's only a pound or two fighters have to cut weight. Having fighters cut or bulk up in fightday is just crazy. Every fight would look like Derrick Lewis
Why would no one be able to fight ?
Is Conor not able to fight at LW ?
Is Rumble not able to fight at LHW ?
Is Gustelum not able to fight at MW ?
they need a method of measuring and recording the fighter's weight over a sustained period of time, such as a week, and use the results to classify the fighter. Whatever the fighter is able to sustain healthfully over a sustained period of time is the weight class that fighter should be in.
they will just cut weight for that week
not down to the weight they cut for 2 minutes right now.
Doesn't work in a sport where guys walk around fat, and get in shape for camp. You're moving the average fighter up two weight classes that way
you missing point, if you tell a guy you want them to prove they can maintain a weight for a week they will just cut/diet hardcore for that week testing period. Asking a guy to be at fight weight for a week is ridiculous and would never happen. At that point you might as well just remove weight classes since guys weight fluctuates differently between fights.
Examples in another professional sport where this didn't work?
they can barely sustain the weights they have to cut to for 2 minutes to weigh in now. They won't do it for a week because they can't.
Maybe i am missing something, but if they do the following:
- step 1: do the normal weight in 1 day before the fight.
- step 2: fighters make weight, proceed to step 3.
- step 3: weight them in right before they go into the octagon, if they miss weight by a large margin (more than 2 - 3 kg tops let say), make them automatically forfeit the fight.
What would the drawbacks of this method be?
lmao that would be awesome, order a PPV, sit back and fight 1 they weigh in at the cage.
Announcer: Didn't make weight! Forfeited! Time for match two!
- fail
Announcer: Let's skip right to fight 3!
Fight 3 and 4 fail to make weight
Bruce Buffer: AND NOW FOR THE MAIN EVENT OF THE EVENING! NVM it's cancelled
asking any one in a weight based sport to maintain fight weight for a week straight is ridiculous and would never happen, whether it's healthy or not. Is conor fighting at 155 unhealthy? i don't think so, yet he would never be able to hold 155 for a week
every other sport with weight classes has significant weight cutting
We might as well close the board with this attitude.
And weight cutting IS bad for fighters' health and has no advantages. I am sure there is not a single fighter in the world who enjoys it. The reason it still exists is 1) that nobody came up with a real, workable solution so far, 2) there are fighters who benefit from it by gaining an advantage over their opponents simply by being able to cut more weight and 3) the cost of adjusting (which would be negligable though imo if division champions were not among the big weight cutters).
So what's the point of everyone just moving up a weight class? Why would fighters who have worked their way to the belt give up that belt just because some idiot on Sherdog thinks weight cutting is bad?
Because weight cutting is stupid and destructive to quality fights. So what's the point of everyone just moving up a weight class? Why would fighters who have worked their way to the belt give up that belt just because some idiot on Sherdog thinks weight cutting is bad?
