I guess it was Jamie Lee Curtis who started it all, but the slasher genre is packed with strong female leads who overcome much stronger bad guys, using their brains rather than the powers of crap choreography and cgi. It's become a cliche, been mocked by parodies like scream, yet they're still churning them out because that's what works really well in that type of film.

The movie industry as a whole isn't lacking well written female leads, it's just the action genre that's doing them really badly in recent years.

Complaining about female action heroes strikes me as petty. A big part of the appeal of action flicks is wish fulfillment, and I think that's true regardless of who is watching. Some part of a scrawny guy wishes he could walk around kicking ass; here's the thing though, some Adonis who benches 275 feels the same way when he watches Rambo. Maybe he just wishes he could punch people he disagrees with in the face without going to prison, maybe he's frustrated that his ability to kick ass doesn't command all the respect that he thinks it should, or maybe he's too scared to get confrontational in real life because his muscles are all show. The point is that the fantasy playing out in a movie for people is cathartic; and if there are some women who want to fantasize about kicking ass when watching a movie, I can't think of a good reason not to let them join in.

BTW, as I stated earlier about my like for the movie Mad Max and Charlize' role in it, I'm going to mention the Resident Evil franchise. It's one of my favorites with a strong female lead in Mila Jovovich. IMO she is one of the most underrated, long-lasting female actresses who delivers her badass role wonderfully.

She still somehow maintains her femininity, grace and beauty all the while being the greatest female action star ever. I think the thing that's missing from her is the seething hate and bitterness of men and authority - or something. She's a likable character because most or all of the unlikable BS isn't there (at least it's not a dominating, in your face theme).

The Walking Dead is one of my favorite shows, but can Michonne like never smile or not have a scowl on her face? Same goes for Sasha and Rosita. Those 3 in particular always come across like they've come back from a university protest or march. Maggie's gotten annoying too. So is Carl lol.
