So it’s been some time since I’ve raged at a game and thought I’d revisit Ds2 Scholar and see if it’s any easier. I’ve been breezing through playthroughs of Ds3 and Bloodborne so I thought I may have gotten good.

I think it took Ds3 to make me fully appreciate how much ass this game sucks. The weapon swing speed is terrible and unfair, the enemy aggro range is almost infinite, no I frames when performing actions, stunlocks, shit hit boxes and unfair trades. Everything about this game is shit. That said, I will soldier on. I just died to the Ruin Sentinels because of how cheap the hitboxes on their weapons are. Back at it again tomorrow.

No but I got the disc protection. I could snap it in half right in front of the cashier and they’ll give me a new copy. Only 2 bucks lol

I’m guessing they use the rapier in speed runs rather than the mace because the mace swings slow as shit.

Alright now we're talking. I haven't played Scholar in forever but was thinking about it a couple weeks ago. The mechanics must feel bizarre after so much Nioh and BB.

Rapier is probably best but the mace is pretty good for poise damage. I've always liked the axe you get from behind the bar at the Wharf.

Got by the Sentinels, Lost sinner without the flames sucks tho. I’m doing good damage but she’s got some bullshit hitboxes on that sword.

I just hate that for the ridiculous number of bosses that are in the game, so many of them are either underwhelming or just rehashes/reskins. Fuck those Belfry Gargoyles.

As someone who only just got into playing DS2 recently though I don't think it's quite as bad overall as a lot of people make it out to be-- but of course that could change once I move on to 3.

Better than Dark Souls 3 simply for the fact it tried to forge its own path instead of coasting on some bullshit Dark Souls 1 nostalgia trip.

Other notable and vastly superior to DS3 features: Actual build variety in PVE and PVP, lava bridge is the best Souls pvp spot ever because it's like the smaller Octagon as it forces the action instead of constant rolling around and running away, power stance > weapon arts, NG+ rules with new weapons to get from boss souls instead of +1 to a ring (pissed me off they didn't expand upon this in DS3 and so I never did a NG+ run in DS3), bonfire ascetic is an awesome mechanic, better covenants like hours of Bell Keepers gangbang invasion fun and trolling in the rat lair, magic is awesome in DS2 especially Dark Magic, better DLC and the content in those packs has more bang for your buck overall, some criminally underrated atmospheric sections like Aldia's Keep, Shrine of Amana, entering King Vendrick's crypt for the first time, and the walk up to Drangleic Castle, and finally, a killer soundtrack.

I wish DS2 came out on PS4/Xbone/PC instead of the previous gen because its obvious the hardware severely limited their vision with the torch mechanic.

DS2 was never my favourite but I love the different perspective from guys like you. You make some great points.

How do you deal with no healing during invasions? Does everyone just use warmth? That was always a huge turn off for me.

Same here, man. I love that everyone has a favorite Souls game. Bloodborne is probably my #1 truthfully. The only criticism about Dark Souls 2 I hate and will never consider valid is all the whiners who complained about no Miyazaki and called the devs the "B team." Very disrespectful and quite hilarious in hindsight considering a lot of DS2 devs also worked on DS3. Also, a lot of people bitch about the tracking and rotating swings from DS2 enemies yet that shit is alllllll over DS3, too.

Never really bothered me not being able to heal. It made invasions a lot more tense and when I was outnumbered, I'd just beeline towards the target and sometimes win before his goon squad took me out. I also abused the item that turns you into an environmental object for shits and giggles. Certain spots were better for invasions like Huntsman's Copse. I didn't like invasions in DS3 at all because I'd whup an invader and he'd run an heal or I'd invade and have to fight 1 v 4 :/ Quite a few times in DS2, I'd invade and the person would chug all their estus and we'd have at it. I often did the same because why not. Makes the invasion more fun for both. Never saw that in DS3.

I also had some hilarious random pvp summons on the lava bridge like one guy dressed up in the butterfly armor, he had spread the...can't remember the name...the glowing balls around in a circle, everyone would emote together like lunatics and then we'd have a duel as the butterfly man sat and watched. One knucklehead came in and interrupted my duel so three of us wrecked him in a few seconds and went back to dueling. Or someone would get summoned, not emote before the duel so butterfly man would run in and wreck their shit. He may have been hacking or it was just a min/max build.

Edit: I should also add that Demon's Souls will always be a secret favorite game in the series for me because it blew my goddamn mind more than any other Souls game. I played it at launch and it was fascinating discovering everything with people via messageboards and a couple friends irl and there weren't streamers ruining things beforehand, getting early access builds and whatnot and people weren't spoiling everything because Youtube gaming wasn't as widespread. Also, no pretentious lore Youtubers either lol.

Very cool. I would have loved to play Demon's on release but I only heard about it when DS1 became popular. There are so many things to discover in that game if you don't use a guide or have people spoiling it for you.

I like the build variety and freedom of weapons in this game. You can infuse a weapon and buff it with the same element, they took that away in Ds3

Beat sinner without the flames, 2nd try. Man does that boss input read. She has pixel perfect dodges when you dodge her attacks and try to hit her in the back. The limited range on the mace sucked. Just had to be patient.
