To be fair, being denied entry for an actual substance of which you are in possession (whether or not you think that substance should be legal) is a lot more justifiable than being denied. Entry for expressing the wrong opinions.
I don't think that guy is referring to being in possession of cannabis though. Supposedly in recent times the US border guards have been asking Canadians if they've ever used cannabis in their lives, and they've denied entry to people who have said yes. I haven't driven across the border in a few years so I can't personally speak to this, but it was all over the news a few months ago.
