Ok, Lithuania is close but I would say yes they are just part of the western world. But not central and South America.
So I was wrong the US is the second most violent country in the western world behind the former Soviet state Lithuania.

We do get the odd report of an American tourist thinking he can bring his hand gun across the border because he doesn't know he's not allowed to, but as far as actually coming over and committed crime it isn't an issue I am aware of.

Should really be compared to other rich countries.

I can understand why they want to secure their border to prevent more violent people from coming into their country.

Yeah, I wasn't 100% serious I think most US citizens overseas are just normal tourists or immigrants.
And even within the US, the most crimes seem to be in certain areas.
I just assumed US citizen would commit the most crimes in Canada simply because they visit the most.

So I googled to find some numbers to troll a bit more. But I can't find any crime stats for foreigners in Canada.
Now that might be my google skills or does the government is somehow not in a hurry to release them?

Perhaps its not too amazing. When things are going well people trust their leaders. If the Human Rights Commission and its tribunals are seen as a part of a whole that has generally governed well it can easily be accepted.

Of course you and I as Americans are easily taken aback by these sorts of things but a level of complacency stemming from consistently acceptable governance is something I can understand.

Its not an uncommon view. For some reason some people just conflate "developed" with "Western" and it leads to the odd inclusion of countries like Japan and South Korea(about as Eastern as you can get) and the exclusion of Central and South America.

That is how you compare such things.
When it comes to statistics in cases like crime, education or unemployment etc. you would have to compare countries that are on the same economic level, with the sort of same political systems.
That is what I mean with Western World. I didn't mean the actual western hemisphere. But what we consider the free, democratic world 1st world.
Mostly industrial nation North America, Western Europe, and Japan.

I was surprised that this is standard protocol. Border agents can search your cell phone and go through your texts, by law. If you ever watch those border patrol shows, they do this all the time.
