Zookeeper Gabe's Animal Thread V6.0

Yep. And so are you, Gabe.

Nonsense. I'm just a regular guy.

Slick-loving the mind control posts.

Horsehair worms have mind control properties too. Poor little huntsman, video not for the faint of heart.

I've probably told this story a few times lol, but here it goes again. When I was a lifeguard, I was sort of the unofficial critter wrangler, I usually was dealing with scorpions, spiders, and centipedes with the occasional bunny. One day one of the guards came up to me in the morning as we were brushing the sides down and asked me what this thing she saw was. I wasn't expecting anything too crazy, but she points and I see what looks like a piece of string but it looked alive and swimming. I had no idea what it was. I guessed it was some sort of parasite, and I figured the best thing to do was to catch it and identify it just in case. So I get a pair of goggles and two cups and got in the water with the thing. For 20 minutes I went after it, it was the creepiest thing I had ever seen. The way it swam was so alien, I didn't want it anywhere near me, but the water would displace it when I moved to catch it. Finally I managed to get it, turns out it was a horse hair worm. There were an excessive amount of grasshoppers in the gutters that morning so it made a lot of sense. It was one of the craziest experiences I had, really felt like I was hunting an alien life form.

Pics of the second most alien thing I've messed around with, just took these yesterday.

This is a fascinating article about primates entering into the Stone Age, their own Stone Age. It details a new field called Primate Archeology. Its a great read if you have the time, I'll provide a quote for the beginning and a link at the bottom for the complete piece.

We think of the Stone Age as something that early humans lived through. But we are not the only species that has invented it

In the rainforests of west Africa, the woodlands of Brazil and the beaches of Thailand, archaeologists have unearthed some truly remarkable stone tools.

It's not the workmanship that makes them special. If anything, a casual observer might struggle to even identify them as ancient tools. It's not their antiquity that's exceptional either: they're only about the same age as the Egyptian pyramids.

What makes these tools noteworthy is that the hands that held them weren't human.

These stone tools were wielded by chimpanzees, capuchins and macaques. The sites where they have been unearthed are the basis of a brand new field of science: primate archaeology.

The worm was framed imo

Got up today to start up the smoker and get it ready for some ribs. Look out in the yard and there's some bird of prey picking at a bird it killed. Got a few pictures, trying to find my camera cord now.

Probably a sharp shinned hawk or Cooper's hawk. They are the two most notorious avian killers around homes.

Yeah, he also coauthored a bunch of books with Philippe. He's a huge breeder in SoCal, but all of the interactions I've seen of him on his forum he's an arrogant prick. He bashes anyone that doesn't use his product. My geckos started refusing his and I switched over to Pangea

Found a baby house centipede at work today. Super cute.

Lol Gabe, coincidentally, i just saw one probably smaller than that running across a coworkers laptop. shes scared of bugs so i went and got a piece of paper and let it crawl on it. It was hands down one of the cutest insects ive seen. they are absolutely adorable so i took it downstairs to an area of carpet where no one goes and let it crawl out. I take back what i said about the baby before lol.

I guess ill regret it when i see a huge motha fucka crawling around the carpet in a few weeks.

Imgur is being a pain. Uploading a few pictures now, it's taking a while. Not many turned out even passable, but oh well. Didn't want to get too close and spook it off of its kill.

I'm surprised this hasn't made it on here yet.

This confirms it: bear is the alphaest of all animals.

Dafuq?

What was that? A cheetah? The cow got ktfo.

Its a ram. The cow probably weighs 1500 pounds, the ram probably 150 pounds. I'm not so sure the cow wasn't killed on impact. Gott damn son, remind me not to fuck with a ram.

Did he died??

Either KTFO'd or dead, one of the two. Lesson learned: don't fuck with sheep.

Seriously. You would think the mass of the cow would have broke the rams neck but the ram was like oh, you want to charge me huh, that's my game son.

Damn. Rams are legit.
