That's not how it works, though. The jury was given lesser charges and they acquitted him of manslaughter.

I'm still reading that the jury had asked questions at the time and was confused about the late-added Manslaughter charge. Apparently it's a little confusing in FL. Anyways the answers they got from the judge weren't very helpful. Honestly I have to read/interpret Statutes for my job sometimes and it's like dissecting an ant.

"The killing of a human being by the act, procurement, or culpable negligence of another, without lawful justification according to the provisions of chapter 776 and in cases in which such killing shall not be excusable homicide or murder, according to the provisions of this chapter, is manslaughter, a felony of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084."

(1) A person is justified in using or threatening to use force, except deadly force, against another when and to the extent that the person reasonably believes that such conduct is necessary to defend himself or herself or another against the other’s imminent use of unlawful force. A person who uses or threatens to use force in accordance with this subsection does not have a duty to retreat before using or threatening to use such force.
(2) A person is justified in using or threatening to use deadly force if he or she reasonably believes that using or threatening to use such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony. A person who uses or threatens to use deadly force in accordance with this subsection does not have a duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground if the person using or threatening to use the deadly force is not engaged in a criminal activity and is in a place where he or she has a right to be."
So you tell me, I don't frickin know. They were under a lot of pressure in addition to the fact they probably weren't accustomed to reading through bullshit like this. There was of course more to read elsewhere. Regardless, that last paragraph probably let Zimmerman off the hook.
