1985. My best friend was a massive Smiths fan - like MASSIVE. He was a privileged boy who had just discovered weltschmertz so it was only natural. I was a fan too, but just for the sound. At the time, i considered their emotional wallowing decadent and closed my ears to it, and it's only in retrospect i can see how brilliant their lyricism is too.

Was The Smiths quite possibly the coolest thing to come out of the 80's?
