I am one of the bigger GSP fans on this site and yet in every poll prior to this last one I think I voted Fedor as GOAT.

I also had no issue with anyone who had Anderson ahead of GSP as I thought those two were interchangeable below Fedor and Jones and Aldo were at one point creeping in.

When Anderson got popped, and popped again for his steroids I personally dropped him down the GOAT list. So did many others and thus why his rankings have suffered. it is fine for others who think steroids should not matter in GOAT discussions as they can still vote for him but many others will not which rightly sees him drop.

it was only once GSP added the MW belt to his legacy accomplishments that I thought he surpassed Fedor and it key that many changed their votes after that accomplishment. And of course that should be no surprise since 'accomplishments' are typically what drive GOAT contests.

Any time a fighter in the GOAT contests has a major accomplishment or set back (ala Anderson and steroids) only the Polls taken AFTER that, which give the voters the chance to consider that new information matter.

A poll taken when Hughes was WW champ asking who is WW GOAT would have no meaning now just as a poll taken prior to one of GSP's biggest legacy accomplishments in his career (winning that MW belt) would not matter when there are new polls taken after the fact.

That is not true. People who follow the sport and are attentive to the changes and landmarks wouldn't simply go with the flow and claim the "best ever" (a silly concept if you think hard about it), is the current champ.

Sports evolve, landmarks are overcome, and a rational outlook on any discipline takes a lot more than the current best into account.

MMA is a complex sport. You can say, factually (as you like), that Usain Bolt is the man who ran the 100m the fastest. But is he the greatest sprinter in over 100 years of the sport?

It gets extremely fuzzy with ball games, MMA and so on.
