I'll never understand these topics.
Yes, it'd be nice if weight cutting as a whole wasn't a thing. I think it's better for longevity and the athletes.
But to denigrate someone for doing what you're suppose to do is just silly. EVERYONE cuts, especially nowadays. It's been a hot minute since someone like Frankie stays within about 5 lbs of the division to fight because they'd rather have the speed/cardio.
Fact of the matter is, with proper weight cutting and proper training regimen you can maintain 95% or more of the speed/cardio you'd get for being 10 lbs lighter-15 lbs lighter, but now you're 5-10% stronger and bigger, too.
If I didn't cut to 181 from 195ish for my competitions I'd be competing 6'3" 7 foot wingspan 195ers...who cut from 205-210.
Why would I be idiotic enough to sign up for a 10-15 lb disadvantage instead of just cutting like everyone else?
What's with the recent weight monitor topics lately? I don't get it. It's literally not only in MMA, but every art in MMA (boxing, BJJ, MT, wrestling)... we cut weight in ALL of those sports when competing.
Or ...with same day weigh ins nobody would be cutting that much .. with this simple change the entire fight game changes and becomes safer and more competitive
Olympic wrestling, Judo, BJJ, Karate ETC all do same day weigh ins ... Nobody is cutting 20lbs and competing the same day ...
Ive never cut more then 8 lbs for a BJJ competitions and that was because i signed up like a week before to take over a training partners spot who had to pull out...
People are only cutting that much cuz there given 24 hours to do so with the stupid day before weigh ins..
Who cares if u make weight friday if ur fighting Saturday night... Why not weigh in the Saturday before and fight a week later... Theres no point to weight classes if your not the weight thats listed on the division..
Why is this such a hard concept for people to follow there are probably hundreds if not thousands of tournaments happening right now who use the same day weigh in..
All im getting is that people are happy they can game the system and their opponents by essentially lying about what division they can fight in .. which again defeats the purpose of having weight divisions...
bring back open weight then since we're not following weight classes any way...lets get jon Jones vs Leon Edwards booked for UFC 300...should be fine .. its just alittle be a of weight their both champions right?..high level guys... Leon cuts weight so he should be fine not having to cut weight and just fighting jones...you know since its clearly not a big deal ...so 195-200lbs Leon vs 255lbs Jones...ya lets book it...
