International Youngest ever World Chess Champion crowned at 18

Does Magnus not play anymore?
yeah, he's still active. He just doesn't want to play for the classical world championship anymore because he doesn't enjoy the format. But just about everyone still considers him the world #1.

Comical and anti climatic ending to the Championship. Either it was intentional or simply exhaustion, because there is no other way any GM would make such a blunder. The level of the games were atrocious.

Carlsen, Caruana, Nakamura, Nepo >> these two kids
But Ding beat Nepo last year, and Gukesh beat Caruana, Nakamura and Nepo in the candidates this year.

I play a lot but I’m not into the pro things of it . It’s this the true world champion or is it like boxing with many titles

Ah ok so this is legit world championship, I know he is picky now days who and what he plays from what I understand. I always enjoyed playing chess majority of my life, I never got into studying it, openings ect. I think that would take the joy of it away from me

Saw Kramnik just got banned from Chess.com for 6 months again ahaha.

Kramnik has been a real ass clown in accusations over the last year or so, going so far as to suggest people like Hikaru (who streams literally for a living, and has likely the highest amount of data recorded from ANY grandmaster on chess.com ON CAMERA) of cheating. Dude is wreckin' his own reputation.

Does Magnus not play anymore?
He is the world blitz and rapid champ, as well as having the world #1 ranking since about 2011 heh. Which in an age of computers, theory, study, and memorization is crazy. Magnus is 34 and Hikaru is 37 -- they both call themselves DINOSAURS despite wiping the floor with other GM's.

Don't expect anyone to watch the whole thing, but he commonly DRINKS, has music on, friends in the background, distractions -- plays BATSHIT / non-traditional openings (against GM's, 2500+) and wipes the floor with them.

I can see that. Pattern recognition took me pretty far in chess before I ever read about openings, mid game, and end game strategies
What's fucked up with this world classical tournament is how it ended. Again, this was a blunder that someone like myself caught in real time -- the nerves fucking COOKED Ding Liren. It may be memorization and patterns and sure openings are crunched by super computers... that's what makes Magnus so fuckin' good though, is he throws out tons of opening prep and theory, gets a worse position and forces other GM's completely out of their prep :)

There's like 75k positions after move 4, and like 200k possible moves, then its gets nutty with 9mil/100mil after 6 or 7 moves...

I think more and more you will see people playing chess 960, or Fischer Random -- which is where all yer back rank pieces are randomized -- and then each opponent has (roughly) 30 mins to analyze it and start from there. It leads to some bonkers games.

"The 18-year-old prodigy won the $2.5 million battle, sealing a 7.5-6.5 victory in a dramatic Game 14 of classical chess...

“It’s fitting that the match goes to the last game, because we’ve both showed a lot of fighting spirit and played some very entertaining chess,” Gukesh said at a post-match news conference.

But analysts said China's Ding made a crucial blunder in the deciding Game 14 that ultimately handed the teen the title."

This is WAR
The future battle of intellectual superiority as real war, industry and economy becomes ever more tech and AI driven.

Russians notably absent.
Carlsen is still the GOAT but will need to come back to try to reclaim title.

Kind of insane. It was a 14 game series and Ding only needed to draw with white to win. Winning with black is extremely hard at this level.

I do feel bad for him. Thats a hell of a lot of sustained, relentless concentration pressure as it is, then if you add the whole India-China rivalry it was immense, someone was going to crack.

I like chess. Got into for a while I was in college after I asked my organic chemistry professor for help on a synthesis. He said I should take up chess to learn how to see several steps ahead. I think he was kidding, but I got into it anyway and played over 1000 games on online. Got pretty decent at it. Wouldn’t want it to be my profession though.

Don't know if your chem professor was joking or not, but regardless he was right.

"Chess players tend to exhibit better spatial reasoning, which is crucial for understanding complex concepts. This ability allows them to visualize and manipulate objects in their minds, facilitating problem-solving and analytical thinking, as per the research. In addition to spatial reasoning, chess fosters long-term planning skills. It is also linked to improve memory retention as the game requires players to remember various strategies, positions, and opponent moves, which enhances their overall cognitive development."

I really like chess, but's just memorization and pattern recognition. It's not the be all and end all of intellectualism like some people make it out to be.

Definitely not restricted to just the game itself, with neuroplasticity and cross wiring its going to make you smarter across a lot of domains and applications.
