History You know, the French used to be Tough

I pirate the shit out thoses old movies, they are impossible to find.

Section 317 is interesting because it's about the ongoing indochina war, pretty similar to a vietnam war movie but in it's own way, very realistic, grounded. Dien Bien Phu is apocalypse for the french soldiers + what's still going on behind the front between vietnamese, french and others. Different but both good.

Btw the realisator was also a good writer -- and directed the adaptations of his books. The guy was there and took part of the action.
It just arrived. (It will probably take me quite a while to watch the whole thing.) First impression, compared to the WW2 audiobooks I listen to, the film brings the reality of colonialism to life.

As much as I enjoy teasing the French about this subject I do fully admit their history pre 1815 is really badass. They do have the most recorded victories in battle in history(of course it would be impossible to verify every battle ever fought in human history) They have been a very good ally for the US and clutched up big time for the US in the Revolutionary War and saved our asses. Napoleon is GOAT tier level commander. Once Germany smashed them in 1870 they fell off hard.

Bonus points for the French Foreign Legion

Agreed with everything except falling off hard after 1870.

They went hard in WWI and were by far the biggest Allied factor on the Western front.

Yeah, Russia lost more people but Russia always loses more people. They were fighting with stones and sticks.

Chile became independent in 1818 and they have never lost a war. Put some respect on their name.

This is their official coat of arms:

That's some gangster ass shit. Pretty much saying, "we can do this this the easy way or the hard way." And, again, it's not some obscure document, it's their fucking coat of arms!

Sure! Sure! It sounds very Martial. But it's just Wolf Tickets until they get a match.

Chile needs a cage-fight with another South American country!

Yeah but I dont Napoleon or Charlemagne is walking thru that Pres. palace door anytime soon.

I'll say this, they were solid in WW1, especially compared to the Franco-Prussian, WWII and lesser extent First Indochina War(very complex from a geopolitical standpoint affecting military maneuvers similar to the US there a decade+ later.)

In WWI they didn't get rolled like in WWII but they also were mostly fighting on one front supported by strong allies while the Germans couldn't fully utilize the Schlieffen plan. They got to 25 miles from Paris but they didn't fully commit troops because of the Russian mobilization to the East. The French were pretty much a past their prime gatekeeper at that point but true they did step up when needed the most. I think they lose in a 1v.1 vs the Brits, Germans, probably the Russians(in a vacuum, no Revolution)), eventually the US, hell, I'd take Japan in an upset 1v.1 under the right circumstances back then. Austria-Hungary and the Ottomans would be interesting matchups also.

Yeah, it seems like WWI was their last hurrah. They didn't want no smoke after that. Britain and Germany dominated the late 1800s and early 1900s so I agree that they'd whoop France in that time period. Russia as well just due to the size advantage.

Japan is interesting because being an island gives them a tremendous advantage. Yeah, they were more warlike than China but China would have still given them the business if they could invade easily. Same with the Mongols.

with the exception of Poland, pretty much all of Europe has capitulated. I still don't understand how this was allowed to happen.
Most countries had either colonies, very liberal governments at the time or a culture of shame, like germany.

Poland has none of that. They were fucked through history from all sides and have therefor a quite healthy national conscience.
Poland was always a victim.

They were also regarded as poor and lazy until recently, weather is shitty, social benefits are shitty, no need to go there if you can choose between germany, sweden, belgia etc.

France won US their independence, then 20 years later, when it was time to pay them back, the US left them to crumble, fearful of defeat to Austria, Britain, Spain etc.

Truthfully a wise decision, but still a bit sketchy.

The whole French are pussies thing is embarrassing to say, but the truth is that most Americans are Hollywood educated, which means that their knowledge of history starts with Saving Private Ryan.

Truth is France lost millions of soldiers in trench warfare in WWI and fought really hard, while USA pretty much dodged the war. After WWI USA were seen as cowards in Yurrp but they don‘t show that in Hollywood movies.

All this to say, the French were bled out from WWI when WWII happened.

Does anyone remember that french fighter on TUF years ago who was like " ehhhhh i want to show dat the french are not quittars" then quit in his fight. That shit was way too funny.

Edit*

Found it, Norman Paraisy was his name:

Did this motherfucker actually fly halfway around the world to quit on the stool after one round?

It almost makes you wonder if it was a bit.

Does this guy have a tapology page or IMDB?

His record is 16-6, and that season of TUF was midway through his MMA career, so it's a mystery why he bailed. There is a 'Norman Paraisy' listed on IMDB as stunt personnel for some French language shows, so maybe he has irons in more than one fire.

I actually saw that guy with his gf irl in a park near Paris while drinking with a buddy. Immediatly recognized him. They may have been a lot of shit talking behind his back this day ^^

Fucking Lafayette !

It was mostly to piss the English off, but still.

Plus US and France are eskimo brothers, both got their ass handed to them in Indochina / Vietnam

While this is true, I think I've also heard this "derp, France surrenders!" from the English.

It'd be interesting to know whether they themselves got it from American pop culture or whether they got this notion independently. They were rivals for centuries so maybe it seeped into 20th century culture.

It must be absorbed from mirrkan culture because the French literally saved the British army from being captured at Dunkirk.
