Section 317 is interesting because it's about the ongoing indochina war, pretty similar to a vietnam war movie but in it's own way, very realistic, grounded. Dien Bien Phu is apocalypse for the french soldiers + what's still going on behind the front between vietnamese, french and others. Different but both good.

Btw the realisator was also a good writer -- and directed the adaptations of his books. The guy was there and took part of the action.

It just arrived. (It will probably take me quite a while to watch the whole thing.) First impression, compared to the WW2 audiobooks I listen to, the film brings the reality of colonialism to life.

As much as I enjoy teasing the French about this subject I do fully admit their history pre 1815 is really badass. They do have the most recorded victories in battle in history(of course it would be impossible to verify every battle ever fought in human history) They have been a very good ally for the US and clutched up big time for the US in the Revolutionary War and saved our asses. Napoleon is GOAT tier level commander. Once Germany smashed them in 1870 they fell off hard.

I'll say this, they were solid in WW1, especially compared to the Franco-Prussian, WWII and lesser extent First Indochina War(very complex from a geopolitical standpoint affecting military maneuvers similar to the US there a decade+ later.)

In WWI they didn't get rolled like in WWII but they also were mostly fighting on one front supported by strong allies while the Germans couldn't fully utilize the Schlieffen plan. They got to 25 miles from Paris but they didn't fully commit troops because of the Russian mobilization to the East. The French were pretty much a past their prime gatekeeper at that point but true they did step up when needed the most. I think they lose in a 1v.1 vs the Brits, Germans, probably the Russians(in a vacuum, no Revolution)), eventually the US, hell, I'd take Japan in an upset 1v.1 under the right circumstances back then. Austria-Hungary and the Ottomans would be interesting matchups also.

Yeah, it seems like WWI was their last hurrah. They didn't want no smoke after that. Britain and Germany dominated the late 1800s and early 1900s so I agree that they'd whoop France in that time period. Russia as well just due to the size advantage.

Japan is interesting because being an island gives them a tremendous advantage. Yeah, they were more warlike than China but China would have still given them the business if they could invade easily. Same with the Mongols.
