maia was my favorite fighter outside of GSP. it always made me really nervous watching him strike though. always like he was about to get his head knocked off.

I remembered Shields too. Both wizards on the floor and that let them get K1 mode

Maia’s welter run was solid af. Dude was 10-3 / 7-1 in his last 8 only losing a title fight going into that. He was the #1 contender @40. Dude still went on a 3 fight win streak in his 40’s. One of the better fighters in terms of longevity / consistency. That’s not to defend Colby that’s to defend Demian. He last few fights were against the best guys well over 40. Dude retired with honor.

He lost to the best at the time. Shields (questionable), Rory, Tyron, Colby, Usman, Burns and Belal. He took no bad losses even old only the best guys at the time he faced them.

Two of his losses were short notice ones too: the title fight vs. Woodley that the UFC made maia take on about a months notice right after he beat masvidal, and the two week notice fight against usman.

And his loss to shields was a controversial split decision.

Maia was ranked for like a decade across two divisions. He was great.
